WILLIAMSBURG — Robert Bauman, Busch Gardens’ original burgermeister, has died.

Bauman died Saturday in Williamsburg at the age of 95.

Bauman wore traditional German lederhosen and sang and danced at Das Festhaus as the park’s first burgermeister when it opened in 1975. He was a top entertainer at the park, singing traditional German songs and drawing large crowds until he retired in 2002.

Before taking on the role of Der Burgermeister, or mayor, Bauman, a native of East Greenville, Pa., was a U.S. Army lieutenant colonel.

Whoops….did not read carefully enough….apparently he lived in Williamsburg.  Maybe when we talked with him last in 2002 he was going to visit Germany.  Anyway I have missed his voice since then, the world is a little sadder place for the loss of him.

I would say it is soooo sad, but he was 95 and lived a long life.  He always made the festhaus our favorite place to eat when we were there.  My family was sad when he moved back to Germany, but we understood.  I am glad he got to spend a few years with his family.  He will be missed.
