Secret Service investigating ATM scam in Virginia

VIRGINIA BEACH — Federal authorities are investigating an ATM skimming scam that has stolen the financial information of at least 25 people in Hampton Roads.

The Secret Service is working with police from Virginia Beach, Newport News and Richmond to find those who are using a device that records information from the magnetic strip on customers’ ATM cards.

Officials found an ATM skimming device at a Virginia Beach Wachovia Bank on July 31. A surveillance camera caught a man and woman installing the device.

Virginia Beach Officer Jimmy Barnes says investigators have discovered other skimming devices, but he would not disclose how many or where.

Withdrawals from the stolen card information have been made from Virginia Beach to Richmond.

Earlier this month, police in Richmond and Chesterfield County also said they were looking into skimming schemes.
