NORFOLK — The Virginia Department of Transportation says it’s going to do more work on the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

A malfunctioning pumping system and water main problem led to traffic delays and emergency repairs in the busy tunnel over the Independence Day weekend.

Spokeswoman Lauren Hansen says work inside the tunnel is expected to start about 7 p.m. Monday and be completed about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday. More work is planned overnight Tuesday.

Hansen says workers will remove water that pooled inside the tunnel and under the road after pumps failed Thursday.

One wonders whether this problem and the traffic congested that it caused, is attributable to a failure to perform periodic inspections and perform preventative maintenance on the pumps.
