Three Virginians selected as Rhodes Scholars

RICHMOND, Va. — Three Virginians were named Rhodes Scholars today, representing the College of William and Mary, the University of Virginia and Auburn Unviersity.
They are among 32 men and women across the United States selected for the top academic honor. The scholarships provide all expenses for two or three years of study at the University of Oxford in England.
—Kira C. Allmann, is a senior at William and Mary majoring in linguistics and government. She plans to pursue a master in philosophy in modern Middle Eastern Studies with an emphasis on the use of new media in the region and other developing areas of the world.
—Jordan D. Anderson of Salem is a senior at Auburn, where he majors in biomedical sciences and is an All-American swimmer and captain of a team that has won two national titles. Anderson has done organic chemistry research on effects of UV light on the eye. He plans to study global health sciences at Oxford.
—Tyler S. Spencer of Washington is originally from Staunton and graduated in 2008 from the University of Virginia with a special major in international health and sustainable development, and a minor in environmental science. Since graduating he founded a nonprofit organization that trains top athletes as HIV/AIDS educators in the District of Columbia schools. He plans to pursue a master of philosophy in social intervention.
