Veterans tour Va. to back climate change bill

» 4 Comments | Post a Comment

ROANOKE — A group of veterans is in Virginia on a nationwide bus tour to support reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Tour sponsor Operation Free says climate change is a national security threat.

Charlottesville native and former Army staff sergeant Chuck Tyler said the group seeks support for a U.S. Senate bill that would cut pollution and develop clean energy incentives.

The bill includes a cap-and-trade system that would require power plants and industries to cut carbon dioxide emissions.

Tyler says the nation’s dependence on fossil fuels increases the danger to troops overseas.

He says if sea levels rise, military installations along the coast would be threatened.

Tour stops were in Roanoke and Charlottesville on Monday, and Richmond and Norfolk on Tuesday.

Ok, and driving around in a bus helps prevent pollution how?

And lets be realistic…a former Staff Sergeant is not a General or an Admiral.  Their veteran status has NOTHING to do with their beliefs and adds no credibility to them at all.  By this logic, I could claim that as a Vet, I’m concerned about abortion as a “National Security” issue, since it reduced the number of draftable young men availible in the future.  I’m sure you’d find that claim ridiculous too.

The previous comments are simply factually wrong.  The Department of Defense has specifically expressed concern about global warming with regards to sea level rise and the potential effects on famine in regions across the world, creating insecurity.  The threat to national security is clearly discussed at http://securityandclimate.cna.org/, written by 15 generals and admirals.

To actually read and learn about global warming instead of relying on non-climate scientists or journalists who do nothing but spread disinformation, read “Climate Literacy” at http://www.climateliteracynow.org/ and specifically http://climateliteracynow.org/CLN_Home_files/Climate_Science_Literacy_Brochure_Final_v4.pdf

It helps if you actually read information from those who are long-time experts on a subject before making unsubstantiated claims about a topic you know little about.

So, to protest carbon based fuel pollution, they’re going to drive a big ‘ol bus around the country…sort of like the jet-setting celebs and politicians who fly private jets to forums talking about pollution.  O, that’s right, this stuff doesn’t apply to “them”, only us little people.

Oh, and for what it’s worth, I’m a Vet too…I don’t see why that gives someone any special insight about pollution or global warming one way or the other.

what nonsense!  While veterans are entitled to our thanks for their service they know nothing more about climate change than anyone else.  Just political posturing like the whole climate change con game.
