Washington Metro announces zero-tolerance policy on driver texting, mobile use
Published: July 9, 2009
WASHINGTON — Metro has a new zero-tolerance policy on talking on the phone, texting or otherwise using a mobile device while operating a train or bus.
The transit agency says any bus or train drivers caught doing in violation will be fired. The policy takes effect Monday.
Previously, Metro had a “three-strikes” progressive disciplinary procedure.
The new policy will allow train and bus operators to use personal cell phones during an emergency situation as defined by Metro.
The announcement comes after a video posted online showed a Metro train operator apparently texting. Metro said this week that the employee was suspended for a week without pay.
Another video posted by WTTG-TV this week purports to show a train operator falling asleep. Metro says it will look into the matter.

Why does this even need to exist? The same question goes to REGULAR drivers. If you’re operating a vehicle weighing over a ton, and you’re not paying attention, what do you think will eventually happen?
(shakes head) Legislating stupidity. Sometimes the gene pool just needs to thin.
