NORFOLK — Both lanes of the westbound tube of the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel have reopened.
The Virginia Department of Transportation says westbound traffic was still backed up nine miles after the second lane reopened at 7:38 p.m. Both lanes had been shut down at 6:30 a.m., and one lane was reopened at 2:15 p.m.
VDOT closed the tube after a faulty pump left 4 inches of water on the pavement. The closure caused massive traffic backups throughout the day in the region.
Norfolk Mayor Paul Fram said the problem was a direct result of legislative inaction on transportation funding. He said, “Had this occurred during an evacuation caused by an impending hurricane or major storm, I shudder to think of the consequences.”
VDOT said single lanes will be closed again overnight Thursday and Friday for additional work. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes during those closures, from 9 p.m. until 9 a.m.

ziggy… geez, you liberals always miss the point. The pump is part of the transportation problem Kaine pledged to fix. By the way, how’s he doing with that?
It’s a symptom of the overall problem of Kaine being a do-nothing governor, especially now that it’s just a temp job for him.
Blaming Kaine for a failed pump? Seriously? You guys are complete morons. What was Kaine suppose to do, drive down there and fix the pump himself? Do you whiny cry babies blame the govt everytime something bad happens? Never mind the tunnel is starting to age and things will break down. Maybe Kaine wasn’t in Richmond because he was in the tunnel breaking the pump….BWHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAA!!!!!! Losers.
This is the result of an absentee governor who is more concerned with the national democrat agenda than representing the people of his own state.
We should be wary of voting for people with huge egos and a burning desire to higher political office.
Kaine is the poster child for inaction because he’s not on site.
He was vacationing on ‘DNC’ business.
I want to know whether Tim Kaine was out of state during this crisis and why he was not prepared to deal with it. I bet if four inches of water were in the DNC office he would be quick to act!
