McAuliffe ads to begin in D.C. this weekend

With 11 days until Democrats decide their nomination for governor, Terry McAuliffe is going on the air where primary candidates usually don't because it's so expensive: Northern Virginia.

McAuliffe, one of three prospects for the nomination, begins running a television commercial Sunday in the pricey Washington market. The advertisement will continue until the June 9 primary.

The McAuliffe spot, similar to one that's appeared downstate, focuses on energy, the environment, education and transportation -- issues that have special resonance in the D.C. suburbs, home to many nationally oriented Democrats.

Creigh Deeds, also running for governor, has a new TV commercial, too. Among other things, it spotlights his editorial endorsement from The Washington Post. The newspaper's backing is widely seen as a big boost for Deeds in Northern Virginia.

Deeds' latest ad is running in the Hampton Roads, Richmond, Roanoke and Bristol broadcast markets.

McAuliffe is also making a push on radio, adding commercials that feature hip-hop artist will.i.am of Black Eyed Peas and former President Bill Clinton.

McAuliffe, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee, is among Clinton's best friends. Clinton has appeared for McAuliffe across the state. McAuliffe was chairman of Hillary Rodham Clinton's unsuccessful bid for the presidency in 2008.
