Goode won’t seek to regain seat

Former Rep. Virgil H. Goode Jr. will not run for the 5th District congressional seat that he lost last year.

In a news release, Goode gave no reason for why he chose not to run in 2010 but said he hopes Republicans will nominate a conservative to run for the seat.

Democrat Tom Perriello of Albemarle County upset Goode last year in a tight contest. Perriello won by 727 votes out of more than 300,000 cast.

Tucker Watkins, the 5th District Republican chairman, said he expects at least four candidates will seek the GOP nomination.

Mentioned as potential GOP candidates are two members of the General Assembly, state Sen. Robert Hurt of Pittsylvania County and Del. Robert B. Bell of Albemarle.

Goode, a conservative lawyer from Rocky Mount, served as a Democrat in the state Senate from 1973 to 1997.

He served in Congress for 12 years, first as a Democrat, then as an independent and starting in 2002 as a Republican.

It was a real shame that he got caught up in all the “hope & change” drama.

Virginia could use another level headed representative these days
