Va. GOP candidates sell their jobs plan

The two men topping the Republican ticket this fall pitched their jobs plan yesterday, paying attention to the state's rural areas.

Bob McDonnell, the party's gubernatorial nominee, and Lt. Gov. Bill Bolling, who is running to keep his post, proposed appointing Bolling to serve as "Virginia's chief job-creation officer" and designating one deputy secretary of commerce to focus solely on rural economic development.

"In the past four years our unemployment rate has increased by 130 percent, from 3 percent to 7.1 percent," Bolling said.

Democratic gubernatorial nominee R. Creigh Deeds released a statement yesterday that said he would bring jobs to Virginia by "rebuilding our transportation system and investing in our educational institutions."

"My opponent has a long record of supporting Jim Gilmore's fiscal gimmicks and opposing Mark Warner's bipartisan economic recovery plan," he said. "So it's no wonder my opponent wants to appoint somebody else to be in charge of job creation."

McDonnell's plan would double the money in, and broaden the purpose of, the Governor's Opportunity Fund, which governors can tap to lure a company to the state. He would pump an additional $20 million over two years into the fund.

He also wants to expand the use of the fund, which carries an available balance of about $11.2 million, according to the campaign. It would include not just job creation and capital investment as criteria to qualify, but also allow companies that generate "significant additional state and local tax revenue" to participate.

In addition, McDonnell would expand a tax credit program to give a $1,000 tax credit per job to businesses that create 50 new jobs, or 25 in economically distressed areas. That's an estimated $14 million investment over two years, according to the campaign.

McDonnell, for your sake and that of the entire Commonwealth: The gloves must soon come off; you must stand firm in your convictions, never to vacillate in the presence of, or against the opposition!!!

Right on target drhoagie…Deeds is just another lying tax and spend Democrat following in the footsteps of Warner and the indisputable failure taxing Tim Kaine. If Deeds really wants to bring jobs to Virginia, he must stand behaind our right to work laws. However Deeeds already has taken big money from union bosses. In addition, Deeds must also endorse offshore drilling for oil and gas, this WILL bring jobs to Virginia, but he seems to be siding with the energy hating leftists. If McDonnell does push for right to work and offshore drilling, he’s a WINNER!

Hogie, two questions:

1) How do businesses and corporations transport their goods and services within and out of the state?

2) Where does the majority of Virginia’s work force receive their basic job skills, such as, say, reading and mathematics?

I assert that investing in the basics is not a “boondoggle” (as you are so oft to describe ANY project put forth by ANY Democrat). You can’t maintain a house which rests on a weak foundation; likewise, we can’t attract business to our state if they can’t efficiently transport goods or provide a well-educated workforce.

You want to talk about pork? McDonnell wants another $30 million or so to “lure” businesses? While I agree that, in some cases, this may generate returns for the state, just how much of that money will “trickle down” to the taxpayers? I’m guessing not much… but hey, why not triple the amount of our money which goes straight into the coffers of corporations? In VA, I’d like to think we know better than to let a fox guard the henhouse.

HELLO!  MCFLY!.  “Rebuilding our transportation system and investing in our educational institutions” will not create sustainable jobs here in Virginia.
These are photo op boondoggle projects created by confiscating hard working peoples money to make politicians look good.
When hard working people have less money to spend, the entire system collapses.
One permanent private sector job created in Virginia is better than 1000 of these temporary pork laden project posts.

Has anyone thought of inviting Sarah Palin to come to Virginia to campaign for McDonald?  It would draw throngs of wildly enthusiastic supporters.  They could call it the Ken and Barbie Show.
