Morrissey to pedal 74 miles through 74th to kick off re-election bid

Del. Joseph D. Morrissey, D-Henrico, is pedaling a 74-mile path through the 74th district to kick off his re-election campaign.

The former Richmond commonwealth's attorney, a Democrat who quickly became one of the House of Delegates' more outspoken members, is seeking a second term representing a district that covers Charles City County and parts of Henrico County, Richmond, Prince George County and Hopewell.

His opponent is Republican Michael Gage.

Morrissey will make the trek next Saturday, starting at Virginia Center Commons, then stopping at Three Lakes Park to speak at a Democratic picnic before "dodging NASCAR race-day traffic" by Richmond International Raceway on his way to Highland Springs.

He'll snake through Sandston and Charles City before crossing the James River to Hopewell, where another picnic awaits. He will head back to the Charles City Courthouse section of the Virginia Capital Trail and finish with . . . a picnic.

Several area elected officials and candidates are expected to join "Team Morrissey" -- wearing shirts reading "Joe, A Fighter in the House" -- along parts of the ride.

We the people need to begin focusing, not only on Virginia’s future, but on America’s future as well. What a person is at this time and what they plan to be in the future is more important than their past. We should not be directing our valuable time and energy on complicated issues in someone’s past employment or on a thesis someone wrote during his/her college days. All of us at some point in our lifetime have seen things differently than we do today or have done things we wish we had done differently. Going back in time is not an option, therefore we must focus on moving forward.

Regardless of a person’s political party or his/her past history, the important thing is the future. These individuals have had learning experiences in both their personal and professional lives that have helped them become better people and leaders.

People who have gained valuable knowledge from their past experiences (yes, this sometimes includes mistakes) are able to get away from the dead end (the past). These people are also able to find an open road (the way to the future) which will present more innovative opportunities that will be helpful to them, as well as others. We the people need to let go of the past and focus on the most important issues - Virginia’s and America’s future. Will you choose a dead end or an open road?
