Beach official fails to get name on ballot for June primary
Pat Edmonson will not be a Democratic candidate for the nomination to run for lieutenant governor.
The little-known Virginia Beach School Board member failed to file the required 10,000 signatures with the State Board of Elections Friday to get her name on the ballot. Friday was the deadline for filing to be a candidate in the June 9 primary.
Edmonson did not return phone calls, but she is said to be considering running for the state Senate seat in Virginia Beach that is being vacated by Kenneth W. Stolle, a Republican who is running for sheriff of Virginia Beach.
Filing Friday was Jon Bowerbank, a Russell County supervisor and businessman, who led all statewide candidates, including candidates for governor, with 18,133 signatures.
To qualify for a primary, state law requires a minimum of 10,000 signatures of registered voters, with at least 400 from each congressional district.
The signatures must be verified by the Democratic Party of Virginia.
Also seeking the nomination for lieutenant governor are former Secretary of Finance Jody Wagner of Virginia Beach and Mike Signer of Arlington County, a deputy counselor to former Gov. Mark R. Warner.
The three Democratic candidates for governor, state Sen. R. Creigh Deeds of Bath County, former Del. Brian J. Moran of Alexandria and Terry McAuliffe of McLean, filed their signatures earlier.
So did Del. Stephen C. Shannon of Fairfax County, the lone Democratic candidate for attorney general.
Because they are nominating their candidates at a convention, Republicans did not have to file petitions.
