Va. GOP wants records on Kaine’s DNC duties
Published: June 20, 2009
The Republican Party of Virginia yesterday requested under the Freedom of Information Act records of Gov. Timothy M. Kaine's out-of-state travels and state expenditures related to his work as chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
Lynda Tran, a spokeswoman for Kaine, said the office will respond to the FOIA request the same way it treats all FOIA requests.
"We'll look at them and see whether the Freedom of Information Act applies to the requests," she said. "And if it does, we will provide the records that are required."
Setting a more aggressive tone for the state GOP, the new chairman, Pat Mullins, suggested that Kaine was fiddling while Virginia was burning.
"He's more concerned with his role as chairman of the DNC," Mullins said. "Instead of addressing the huge budget deficit, he's in Kansas City."
The request seeks information about Kaine's daily schedule from Jan. 21, when he answered President Barack Obama's call to become DNC chairman, to the present. It also seeks records pertaining to the expenses of Kaine's executive protection unit, such as for travel and hotel accommodations.
Tran said the state assumes the costs of Kaine's security detail in his public and private business, but the costs for the governor's travel on behalf of the national party are picked up by the DNC.
"Those guys cover him 24/7, whether he's asleep in the governor's mansion or hiking in the mountains with his family," Tran said.
Mullins also accused Kaine of making secret trips out of state on DNC business. The travels are not listed on Kaine's public schedule.
Along with filing the FOIA request, the party released a video poking fun at Kaine's travels, showing him at speaking engagements in Durham, N.C.; Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; Dallas; Miami Beach; and Chicago.
"He's skipping out on his day job -- a lot," states the video, which has been posted to YouTube.
Tran said Kaine went to Kansas City to visit his father on Father's Day and the party also asked him to attend a private fundraiser on behalf of Obama while there.
"Stealth travel is unacceptable when Virginians are hurting economically," Mullins said.
Tran said the governor's private comings and goings are not placed on his official public schedule out of "security and privacy" concerns and said the DNC is responsible for publicizing Kaine's public schedule on its behalf.
Most of the excerpts in the video are from Friday and Saturday night appearances, she said.
"Even the governor is allowed to have a little fun on the weekends," she said.
Tran noted that polls show Virginians are satisfied with Kaine's performance as governor.
Republican Gov. Jim Gilmore was chairman of the Republican National Committee in 2000 and 2001 and drew little criticism. Mullins said the state was prosperous then but is hurting economically now.

Exactly. any citizen of Virginia could have requested this info, but Pat Mullins has to grandstand that he is doing it. well Kaine’s schedule has little bearing on the problems facing Virginians today. VA GOP is tone-deaf to what is important in these tough times.
Guess it’s not surprising that instead of being the public’s watchdogs over our elected officials, the media has become lapdogs for liberal politicians. Unfortunate that the VA GOP had to file the FOIA request; should have been someone, anyone in Virginia’s media.
Good to see that though the party chairman has changed, the GOP is still following its disasterous tone-deaf and tiresome petty political strategies. Virginians are struggling in today’s economy and they spend their time settling old scores with a lame duck governor. How about engaging with the citizenry on realistic solutions to their problems. Let’s hope that this election will send them the message that their tired politics no longer win elections.
Mikeyt,
And, if you disqualify everyone who thinks Kaine is doing a good job, you would get a result even more to your liking.
Anon… I’ll give you the poll. But did you review it? First, it doesn’t tell us how many people were surveyed. Second, take out uber-liberal Northern Virginia that would support Kaine if he murdered someone and it’s not favorable. Third, half the people don’t say he’s doing a good job and they like that? Pretty low standard there.
I stand by my assessment. He’s a joke as a governor. He’s done nothing positive in four years.
Mullins wants Kaine under house arrest in the Governor’s Mansion on weekends so they can be sure they are getting their money’s worth.
Next they’ll want an ankle bracelet to make sure he doesn’t take extra long lunch breaks.
Bones, your sense of reason is lacking at best. You seem to have the mentality of a school aged child on a playground. “We didn’t go after your guy so leave ours alone”. As someone who supported Gilmore, I was very disappointd in his performance; especially the last six months and it is that performance that has ruined his political career. Now, to say Republicans are taking the “superior tack” because they are investigating possible wrongdoing by our sitting Governor is just stupid. What you’re suggesting is we turn a blind eye to possible criminal activity. If Gilmore committed wrongdoing then he should have been held responsible for it and your Democrat party should have led the way. Republicans are not going to back down because of some foolish protocol. I hope Republicans have learned a lesson after the Clinton fiasco. They didn’t pursue removing him from office thinking the goodwill would be reciprocated and it wasn’t. Crimes are crimes and it doesn’t matter if the perpetrator is an average citizen or a sitting Governor, justice must prevail. Next time tell your party leaders to live by a higher standard. A Republican, Sen. Ensign, is leading the way by properly resigning his post after being caught up in an extramarital affair. Perhaps Kaine will do the same honorable thing if the evidence begins to mount up…we shall see.
A SurveyUSA poll released on 4/29 shows Kaine’s approve/disapprove at 50% to 39%.

Ah, further evidence of Short Memory Syndrome. Ironic that the GOP is wearing such the high hat, when Jim Gilmore as head of the RNC was nowhere to be found in VA during his final year as Governor. That is until he was fired from that post after his inept handling of the state budget was a major factor in the GOP losing the next Gov’s election. Then we in VA got to see him a whole lot more, as he came back to “spend more time with his family.“ What a guy.
As a Kaine supporter, I stipulate that he is likely pushing the limits in trying to manage both jobs at once. But Repubs, please don’t take the superior tack—given your own guy’s doing the same thing in very recent memory, pointing the finger makes you look silly.
Look, Republicans are disingenuous here questioning Kaine when they supported Gilmore doing the same thing. But neither man should have done it and the Republicans are correct to try to find out how much state money Kaine is spending on DNC business. Notice I don’t say “if,“ but “how much.“
I’d like to see these polls that show Virginians are good with Kaine’s performance. I follow politics closely and I haven’t seen a poll on Kaine in at least a year—before he became a part-time governor.
Kaine’s job performance is a joke. He’s doing his best to force Virginians to live in urban areas with the ridiculous VDOT subdivision requirements he rammed through the Commonwealth Transportation Board this spring to kill subdivision development, and he’s working hard to kill economic development with these outlandish stormwater requirements that commercial developers and builders will not be able to afford. He’s responsible for the $3.7 billion budget deficit due to his social spending, he has done nothing to fix the state’s transportation problems, schools are performing worse now than when he took over, and he’s largely responsible for dividing Virginia in two, with Northern Virginia basically seceding from the rest of the state due to his blatant partisanship. He’s a farce.
