Poll: McDonnell at 49% and Deeds at 43%

The latest survey by Public Policy Polling shows Republican Bob McDonnell has the support of 49 percent of those polled, and Democrat R. Creigh Deeds has 43 percent, in the race for governor.

The result follows polling right after the June 9 Democratic primary that showed Deeds, a state senator from Bath County, with an edge over McDonnell.

The new poll also shows Republican Bill Bolling apparently ahead of Democrat Jody Wagner, Virginia's former secretary of finance, 46 percent to 40 percent in the race for lieutenant governor.

State Sen. Ken Cuccinelli, R-Fairfax, has 45 percent versus 38 percent for Del. Stephen C. Shannon, D-Fairfax, in the race for attorney general.

According to Public Policy, McDonnell has picked up more support among independent voters and holds a 54-33 advantage over Deeds in that category. Both candidates are viewed favor ably by potential voters, with positive ratings hovering around 50 percent and negatives around 30 percent.

Deeds has a 4-1 edge over McDonnell among blacks, who came out in unprecedented numbers last fall and helped Barack Obama carry the state.

But the survey suggests that there is little interest in the race among black voters, or young voters, whom pollsters expect to turn out in lower numbers than last year.

The pollster noted that at the same juncture in 2005, Republican Jerry W. Kilgore had a 6-point lead over Democrat Timothy M. Kaine in the race for governor.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 617 likely general election voters from June 30 to July 2. The survey's margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points.

Picking a candidate is easy.
Look at their tax returns and see how much money they give to charity.
Where they put their own money tells everything you need to know.
If they REALLY care and want to make a difference, it will show.

Willi: I hadn’t heard about this. Can you elaborate? How many employees was this? Was it a whole agency? Which one?

Polls aside, one would hope that voters will closely observe each candidate and choose the one who(1) more sincerely, directly, and thoroughly addresses issues within Virginia which are crucial to the welfare of the Commonwealth and (2) divorces himself from the divisive partisanship of the DNC and RNC. Virginia badly needs a non-partisan leader not another professional political operative seeking to further his own personal and partisan interests.

Both candidates for Governor, I believe are capable of that leadership - the question, then, is whether they will assign their highest priorities to the best interests of the average citizen of the Commonwealth.

Neither candidate has offered a line by line budget to cut waste. Yesterday, state employees were advised on offical intranet sites of a tennis tournment and to call a state employee on his govt. phone. This is waste. If these folks don’t have anything better to do at work, they need to go. This should be done after-hours. Sounds minor, but by the time you add in the cost of the computer usage, planning and such, the price is not small.
