Group halts Va. voter mailing amid legal questions
Published: October 29, 2009
NORFOLK — A nonprofit group has halted a planned mass mailing that would have the disclosed the voting history of thousands of Virginians after questions were raised about its legality.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that the Know Campaign planned to distribute mail pieces to 350,000 randomly chosen households containing a resident’s participation in recent elections, along with that of his or her neighbors.
The mailing said the information was obtained from the Board of Elections.
Board Secretary Nancy Rodriguez says the board didn’t release the information to the group.
Lists of people who voted in elections can be released only to candidates, elected officials and political party chairmen.
Know Campaign Executive Director Debra Girvin says she halted the mailing until the matter could be clarified.

TR20, perhaps you are the one who does not understand the meaning of “secret ballot”.
Your choice is not public record, but your participation in the voting process (or lack thereof) is.
Do you understand the difference?
Dear TR20: These people won’t know who you voted for only that you voted. I expect they want the list because they believe people who actually voted will be more likely to contribute. I don’t think they should get these lists.
Are these people so stupid that they do not understand the principle behind the secret ballot?
According to the Virginian-Pilot this group name is in its 3rd incarnation; the first 2 were Republican & anti-tax (redundant). The spokesperson will not reveal the source of this incarnation’s initial $150,000 “foundation grant” or anything else regarding who is behind it.
I tend to think it’s just a means of channeling income into someone’s pocket, but it would be good to know if someone actually broke the law here.
Please post it if you can get their current contributor list. It needs to be posted as well.
Or Post a link for that info.
These guys have your information, so in fairness here is their’s.
Here is the info on these guys. If you hate giving money to the government for military, roads, health care, etc., go ahead and give it to these thieves.
Contribution info is from 2006, a bit dated.
Note that their office is in the same building as the Henrico GOP.
