Karzai declared victor in Afghanistan
Published: November 2, 2009
Afghanistan’s election commission has canceled Saturday’s presidential runoff and proclaimed President Hamid Karzai victor of the war-ravaged nation’s tumultuous ballot.
Independent Election Commission chairman Azizullah Lodin announced Karzai as the victor during a news conference in Kabul on Monday.
Karzai’s challenger, former Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah, dropped out of the race Sunday because he said the vote would not be free or fair following fraud-marred first round.

We’ve hung our hat on an election run-off providing legitimacy and now that’s out the window. Why did the challenger pull out? There’s got to be more to this than meets the eye? Seems to me it would be a lot cheaper to back ‘back our guys’ in Afghanistan and let them fight their own fight. All they know is tribal and clan warfare. Let the Taliban back in and let them deal with the internecine chaos.
Why would the Obama Administration want to team up with this weak sister? He’s almost as reclusive as the North Korean Dear Dictator. He only comes out of hiding to visit the US and beg for help.
Take advantage of the election as a reason to declare victory and withdraw now! We learned in Vietnam we are not good at propping up puppet governments.
