If you’ve got to play a defending league champion, this is the way to do it. Chattanooga, which meets the University of Richmond at 5 p.m. at the Robins Center, lost the top four scorers off last season’s Southern Conference title-winning team. Additionally, two starters and two top reserves are out until next month, because of injuries and an academic issue in one case. The Mocs had eight healthy scholarship players as their season began.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Virginia got the ball and quarterback Jameel Sewell (Hermitage) threw a 38-yard strike to Perry Jones. It was the first offensive spark of the half, and it appeared as if the Cavs might mount a comeback. Instead, Sewell was sacked by Rennie Moore, Jones ran for a loss of a yard, and Kavell Conner (Manchester) pummeled Sewell on third down. A personal foul penalty extended the drive, but the damage was done.

BLACKSBURG - Virginia Tech and its fans celebrated the past yesterday at a full Lane Stadium, cheering the contributions of the Hokies’ seniors before and during a 38-10 win over North Carolina State. One by one, they jogged out of the tunnel in the north end zone, listened to the applause and gave performances worthy of it: the undersized linebacker, a former walk-on, who became one of their best players; the free safety who struggled earlier this fall but is finishing well; the cornerback who battled a knee injury all season.

Playing defense for Hampden-Sydney isn’t a glamorous job. After 60 minutes of grinding down offensive lines and running backs, it’s usually quarterback Corey Sedlar (Mills Godwin) picking up the accolades and passing records. But over the course of the season, the Tigers’ defense has proved to be just as talented as its heralded offense.

Jeff Capel and Oklahoma make a much-anticipated visit to the sold-out Siegel Center tonight. While much of the focus has been on the return of Virginia Commonwealth’s former coach and the opportunity to get a signature win over the 17th-ranked team in the country, the Rams (1-1) may be better served by focusing upon themselves. Some problems emerged in an eyebrow-raising 83-67 loss at Western Michigan Wednesday, a loss that was almost as disturbing for ‘how much’ as for ‘how’. This was a team the Rams whipped by 17 points last year.

WILLIAMSBURG For two stretches, University of Richmond defenders lost William and Mary shooters. As a result, the Spiders lost the game. The Tribe pulled a 78-71 upset before 2,104 at William and Mary Hall last night. The Tribe made 10 3-pointers, not an extraordinary number. But three in a row came in the last 1:18 of the first half, and that flurry allowed W&M to take a one-point lead and momentum at intermission. The sequence repeated in the second half. W&M’s David Schneider (25 points) hit two 3-pointers and a shorter jumper in less than 60 seconds, moving the Tribe (1-2) to a six-point lead with 10 minutes left in its home opener.

CHARLOTTESVILLE—Will Sherrill always makes a lot of noise—it’s in his nature, he says—but as a walk-on he’s usually doing it from the bench. Not so last night, as Virginia coach Tony Bennett opted for a two-forward lineup despite only having three of them at his disposal. It worked out just fine in a 79-46 victory against Rider, as Mike Scott was distributing the ball from inside and Sherrill was enjoying 16 minutes of playing time, more than three times his previous career high.

BLACKSBURG Her chest heaved and her feet burned as she ran across the lumpy field. None of it felt perfect to Marika Gray. But on this July day in Alexandria, perfect didn’t matter, because Gray was playing soccer again, nine months after a left knee injury shortened her sophomore season at Virginia Tech. She had established herself as a legitimate ACC player, before her knee made her start over, back on the lumpy field at home, playing against 14-year-olds from her club’s younger team. The time away from soccer deteriorated her touch and fitness worse than she had imagined. A ball rolled her way and bounced off her shin. She could barely sprint without sucking wind.

The teams swapped leads for the first 10 minutes of the game, but the Patriots’ 17 first-half turnovers and a 20-7 first-half run by the Spiders put GMU far behind by halftime. One game will be a rematch of one of the greatest NCAA championship games in history, a chance to relive Mario’s Miracle. And the first game could be more intriguing than the nightcap. Two hours before Villanova played the University of Richmond at UR Stadium on Nov. 7, Dennis Blackburn repeatedly bent over with a stencil in his left hand and a can of white spray paint in his right. Up the sideline he walked, spraying the edges of yard-markers so they would be precisely four inches wide, with well-defined corners. Blackburn, wearing a hounds tooth check hat, then walked to the numbers on the field and touched up each of them with a spray of white. He studied the grass, looking for divots to repair, or other blemishes. There weren’t many. UR Stadium’s grass is “as quality a turf as you’re going to see anywhere in college athletics,“ said Jim Miller, the Spiders’ athletic director.

As the final piece of his team’s preparations for yesterday’s Old Dominion Athletic Conference clash with Randolph-Macon, Hampden-Sydney coach Marty Favret made his players watch a video Friday night. This wasn’t some funny, feel-good movie intended to keep an unbeaten team loose before its most important game of the season. It was a horror flick: the Tigers surrendering 21 unanswered points to squander a 21-10 fourth-quarter lead, then looking on helplessly as the Yellow Jackets and their fans celebrated their 2008 ODAC title on Hampden-Sydney’s field.

BLACKSBURG—A banner hangs from the ceiling of Cassell Coliseum, commemorating Virginia Tech’s last trip to the men’s basketball NCAA tournament, in 2007. Today, the Hokies will play under that banner again, as they begin their season at 4 p.m. against Brown, a season whose success will hinge almost entirely on whether they can return the NCAAs.

CHARLOTTESVILLE—A whirlwind week of tournament play for the Richmond field hockey team ended with a 3-0 loss to No. 2 Virginia, in a second half where the Cavs had too much offensive firepower. Spiders coach Gina Lucido addressed her team afterward in front of a whiteboard that read “A-10 Champions,“ a reminder that the team accomplished its goal for the season.
