ARCADIA, Calif.—What a gal! Zenyatta overcame early trouble to beat the boys in the $5 million Breeders’ Cup Classic yesterday, running her record to 14-0 in the most impressive effort of her career. The 5-year-old mare rallied from last after a poor start and fought off Gio Ponti in the stretch to win by a length at Santa Anita, beating a loaded field of 11 males and becoming the first female to win the Classic in its 26-year history.

NEW KENT—Nicota made up a 10-length deficit at the midway point and stormed home to win the fastest of eight Virginia-bred title races on yesterday’s $334,000 “Day of Champions,“ which concluded the track’s fall harness season. In last week’s prep race, Nicota lost by a neck to Rick’s Crossroads, the heavy favorite in yesterday’s $43,800 event for 3-year-old colts and geldings. Nicota seemed buried entering the home straightaway. But it was there that reinswoman Devan Miller began her late surge.

Homeister arrived at the track tied with P.J. Cooksey at 2,137 lifetime wins but took over sole possession of second place with the 1½-length victory over Grant Me Sunshine. For Battle of Hastings, the biggest obstacle to a big victory today may not be a distinguished field of jockeys or the other champion horses. It might be jet lag. The horse, which is originally from England, has been racing out of Santa Anita in California. After notching two stakes race victories this year, he has been installed as the morning-line favorite for today’s Colonial Turf Cup at Colonial Downs. Racing begins at 1 p.m., with the main event scheduled as the 11th race.

PHILADELPHIA—State officials are investigating whether a veterinarian used a gun to euthanize a racehorse at a track near Philadelphia, a possible violation of track rules and racing industry standards. NEW KENT - Battle of Hastings has been installed as a 2-1 favorite in Saturday’s fifth running of the $500,000 Colonial Turf Cup at Colonial Downs. The 1 3/16th-mile turf race, the 11th of 12 races on the program, is scheduled for 6:20 p.m. A field of 10 3-year-old horses entered the Grade II race. The early second choice at 3-1 is Take the Points, one of two horses entered by trainer Todd Pletcher. Take the Points, who finished 13th in the Preakness, will be ridden by Garrett Gomez.

That was his Derby-winning formula. “He worked in :50 and out in 1:02, just like before the Derby. In the Triple Crown’s final installment, leading man Calvin Borel will get back on Mine That Bird with a chance to become the first jockey to win the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and the Belmont using two different horses. Borel won the Derby aboard Mine That Bird at 50-1 odds, then jilted him for Rachel Alexander and beat the Derby winner in the Preakness by a length. Since Borel has ridden the filly to six straight wins, he said he’d be loyal if she ran in the Belmont. But now he’s free for Mine That Bird and ready to compete in his first Belmont with history riding on the outcome.

Alexandra the Great: Remarkable filly wins Preakness

BALTIMORE—Girls rule! The best 3-year-old in the land just happens to be a filly named Rachel Alexandra. Jockey Calvin Borel all but guaranteed victory in the Preakness Stakes and, boy, did Rachel Alexandra deliver, becoming the first filly in 85 years to win the second leg of the Triple Crown. A rangy bay—as big as most of the horses she beat—Rachel Alexandra shot to the front yesterday and wasn’t seriously challenged until a late close by Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird.

Moments after Rachel Alexandra crossed the finish line to win the Preakness Stakes, the obvious question arose: Will this very special filly compete in the Belmont? “Would we love to run? Yes. Could she win? We think so,“ said co-owner Jess Jackson, whose Stonestreet Stables bought the horse May 7. “We’ve already shown she can run with colts. It’s a question now of her best interests.“

Pioneerof the Nile faces obstacles on a potentially wet track at Pimlico in efforts to avenge his loss to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird. Bob Baffert oozed confidence in Pioneerof the Nile leading to the Kentucky Derby. The colt was in front coming down the stretch, and for a few moments the Hall of Fame trainer thought he had his fourth Derby victory.

Rachel Alexandra is adding a dose of girl power to Saturday’s Preakness Stakes, taking on a field of 12 colts for the first time in her 3-year-old life. Pimlico oddsmaker Frank Carulli made Rachel Alexandra the 8-5 morning-line favorite. The filly drew the far outside No. 13 post position. “It’s a good spot for her,“ said Bob Baffert, who trains rival Pioneerof the Nile. “She’s out there in the clear. Larry Jones knows something about running a filly against the boys in a Triple Crown race, and he’s not looking forward to the threat posed by Rachel Alexandra. The trainer saddled Eight Belles to a second-place finish in last year’s Kentucky Derby before she broke her front ankles past the finish line and had to be destroyed on the track.

Prize money will shrink at Colonial Downs this year, with the notable exception of the Virginia Derby. The track will host 17 stakes races during this year’s summer thoroughbred meet, which runs from June 5-July 28. For the local weekend stakes races, purses will drop to $50,000, down from last year’s $60,000. “In order to keep the overnight purse level in line with past years, we had to cut some of the stakes purses marginally,“ director of racing Tyler Picklesimer said.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Mine That Bird stood regally, his ears pricked, his gaze fixed on the rows of clicking cameras. LOUISVILLE, Ky. Calvin Borel was in a familiar place, along the rail and urging Mine That Bird to fly through the mud. Trainer Bennie Woolley Jr. was someplace he never imagined—the Kentucky Derby, with his horse in the lead. Together they pulled off one of the greatest upsets in 135 years of America’s most famous horse race. “It was a Street Sense move,“ Borel said yesterday, referring to the same rail-hugging ride he gave that colt to win the Derby two years ago. “They can only go so fast, so far. When I hollered at him, he just went on.“

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Jeff Mullins rarely spoke publicly this week about I Want Revenge, the horse he was training for the Kentucky Derby.
