The Federal Club, with a $9 million Arnold Palmer-designed golf course, opened three years ago with high-profile promise. Today, the club and the surrounding upscale housing development known as Mountain Run off U.S. 33 in Hanover County is in bankruptcy protection. Mountain Run Golf Inc. and Mountain Run LLC filed for Chapter 11 on Tuesday afternoon in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Richmond. Together they represent the golf club and course and unsold residential parcels.

Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker were perfect as Presidents Cup partners, and they got enough help from everyone else yesterday to put the Americans in position to stay perfect on home soil. With an improbable rally by Woods in the morning and pure putting by Stricker in the afternoon, they became the first partnership in the Presidents Cup—and the first in 30 years of any team competition—to go 4-0.

Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker dominate no matter what the format. Phil Mickelson wins no matter whom he has for a partner. It still isn’t enough for the Americans to pull away. For the second straight day, the Americans were poised to take a comfortable lead, but the International team just won’t back down. It rallied to win two late matches to split the fourballs session.

One putt changed everything except the lead yesterday in the Presidents Cup. The Americans were poised to seize control in the opening session of foursomes at Harding Park, already assured of the lead and on the verge of winning the final match for a two-point advantage. Richmond Country Club General Manager Toby Tomko said he has no reason to assume the Duramed Futures Tour won’t return to the Goochland County facility in 2010. Tomko said the tour, which has visited RCC in each of the past two seasons, seems as enthusiastic about the site as the club is about the tour. “We want them to come back and they want to be here,“ Tomko said. “There’s no question that both parties are very interested in continuing the relationship.“ He said the club’s membership is “very enthusiastic about holding this event again. Buick ended more than 50 years of PGA Tour sponsorship yesterday when it announced that it no longer will sponsor golf tournaments in Michigan and California because of the court-ordered restructuring of parent General Motors. The decision came two days after Tiger Woods won the Buick Open in Grand Blanc, Mich. Woods acknowledged the end of the tournament, which he won for the third time, by heaving his golf ball toward a massive gallery after his final putt.

Tiger Woods has another trophy for his overflowing collection. Woods shot a 3-under-par 69 yesterday and coasted to a three-shot victory with a 20-under 268 at the Buick Open for the 69th PGA Tour title of his career. “This one feels good,“ he said. He improved to 36-1 when he has the outright lead after 54 holes. Woods has four wins this season—doubling the total of his nearest competitors—in just 11 starts since returning from knee surgery.

Catriona Matthew won the Women’s British Open by three strokes yesterday, capturing her first major title just 10 weeks after giving birth to her second child. The 39-year-old Scot birdied three straight holes on the back nine to hold her third-round lead. She finished at 1-over 71 for a 3-under 285 total. “I’m speechless,“ Matthew said. “To be honest, I didn’t play that well today, but I holed good putts at the 13th and 14th, which I needed. I never imagined coming back - after not playing - that I could win. It hasn’t sunk in yet.“

His swing coach, Rick Smith, described Daly as being in a “toxic state” after an 88 in the Buick Open, which Smith attributed to a massive weight loss, not enough sleep and the wrong kind of diet.

Yet, Jamerson stretched his lead to five strokes with a splendid 66—a round tarnished only by a suddenly timid putter that failed to convert three times inside 10 feet on his inward half with a course-record tying 62 within reach.
