Senior Cyrus Baird of Hermitage is one of many players called on to pitch for Glen Allen Post 244, which struggles to find enough pitchers to throw nine innings in as many as five games a week. Summer is associated with baseball, and for the area’s best high school players, it means American Legion baseball, a decades-old institution. But during the past few years, what has previously been the most competitive game in town has lost some of its edge.

Last night’s American Legion all-star game began with North coach John Boyer urging his team to run out every ball, swing with enthusiasm and play the game with passion. “Body language speaks,“ he said, and there was a cluster of college scouts watching every move. That advice was ultimately unnecessary, as the players did sprint off the field every chance they had—doing so to avoid a rain that grew steadily harder.

Like Neapolitan ice cream, wise men or blind mice, dominant pitching is better when it comes in threes. In the Colonial District, it’s embodied by Douglas Freeman’s Patrick Scoggin, Deep Run’s R.C. Orlan and Mills Godwin’s Kevin Buran. You could say they have a bit of a love-hate relationship. The love part is that they’re friends. So it’s more of a bromance type of love. The hate part is that since they’re nestled next to one another in the western corner of Henrico County, they’re forced to pitch against each other. The race for best pitcher in the Colonial District has no front-runner. It has a trifecta.

Reed Gragnani had a plan for his future. Of course, that was before major-league scouts got in the way. The Mills Godwin shortstop wanted to go to college. They saw the mechanics and talent that have caused some to regard him as the best player in the state of Virginia.

Even when you know what pitch he’s going to throw, Blake Hauser is still tough to beat. The Manchester righty threw all seven innings, striking out 12 and led No. 1 Manchester to a 7-4 victory over No. 4 Cosby. Manchester second baseman Augie Ayers, attempting to strategically position himself for the play, reacted to the catcher’s signal before the pitch. If the catcher called fastball, Ayers would move away from the batter, expecting an opposite-field hit. If the catcher called for a curve, Ayers moved toward the hitter, expecting the ball to be pulled.
