Breezes affect jump shots. Rain stops games. Otherwise, the CarMax Summer Basketball League for 17-and-under boys and girls at Pine Camp Arts and Community Center on Old Brook Road closely resembles in-season hoops. Observers of all ages occupy the bleachers and lawn chairs, or just stand and watch, as some of the area’s finest players in high school, middle school and elementary school go at it under the lights in intense games with experienced officials.

No, Pat Pinkard didn’t actually invent girls travel basketball. She did, at least in the Richmond area, put wheels on the concept, made it shine and gave it a motherly, loving shove in the right direction. There are numerous year-round hoops options available now, but until the mid-1980s there was no local travel basketball - the ball stopped bouncing at the end of the high school season.

PETERSBURG - Outmanned in the paint and overwhelmed on the scoreboard, Benedictine could have opted to simply go through the motions in the second half of last night’s Virginia Independent Schools Division I state semifinal against Blue Ridge. After all, the Cadets already had achieved plenty this season by reaching the final four despite losing three standouts to graduation, including 2007-08 state player of the year and current University of North Carolina freshman Ed Davis.

When John Marshall boys basketball players and coaches talk about last year’s Central Region championship and run to the state tournament semifinals, Quantae Cooley can only listen. Cooley played for JM’s Colonial District rival Thomas Jefferson a year ago but transferred to John Marshall for his senior year. After the Justices defeated Highland Springs in Friday night’s semifinals at the Siegel Center, Cooley had this to say: “I wasn’t with them last year. This is the best feeling in my life.“

The box scores from Thursday night’s Central Region basketball tournament semifinals point to a telling statistic about the Cosby and Atlee girls. The Raiders (24-3) and Titans (27-1) are scheduled to meet in tonight’s final at 6 at the Siegel Center, but the snowy weather will have something to say about that. Stamina will be a key factor when the game is played. These are teams of ironwomen. Each of Atlee’s starters was credited with playing 32 minutes in the Raiders’ victory over Mills Godwin. Tori Eberle, a senior, played in the waning seconds.
