The groundwork for Thomas Dale’s 28-14 road victory over L.C. Bird yesterday in the Central Region, Division 6 semifinal was laid not just in practice, not in hours and hours of film study, and not in some late-night meeting where Vic Williams and his coaching staff conceived the game plan. It was laid one bleak Friday two months ago when the Knights, up 14-0 at halftime, suffered a 21-14 defeat at the hands of the Skyhawks, their neighborhood rival, and made a commitment never to feel the pain again.

Hanover jumped out to a two-touchdown lead seconds into the game, then managed to hold on to seal a 35-33 Central Region Division 5 semifinal win over visiting Dinwiddie yesterday. Hawks quarterback Sam Rogers (8 of 15 for 142 yards and two TDs) then hooked up with Kenny Morris on a 29-yard screen pass for a 7-0 lead.

What he did: In last week’s 17-16 victory over Varina, he had quite a night. The 6-foot, 184-pound wide receiver caught three passes for 72 yards, including a 39-yard reception that set up a Highland Springs field goal, picked the ball out of the air after a blocked field goal attempt and returned it 70 yards for a TD at the end of the first half, and - if that weren’t enough - was one of two Springers with an interception. Age: 18 Other sports: Track Favorite thing besides sports: “I like to listen to music and draw [pen and pencil].“ Three words his friends would use to describe him: “Funny, outgoing, sociable.“ Strengths: “Positive attitude; promoting togetherness; I can catch [the ball] and make a play.“ Working to improve: “Running my routes, getting better at catching the ball. You always work on that.“ Biggest challenge: “Balancing school work and practice.“ Best sports memory: “Beating Varina. It was my last home game, and to end it on a note like that.“ Sports person he admires most: “Jerry Rice [for his receiving].“ Favorite food: Fried chicken Pet peeve: “Ignorant people.“ Possession he can’t do without: “My cellphone.“ If he had one wish: “That my mom could have her own art studio.“ One thing about you most people don’t know: “That I’m shy until people get to know me.“ - Arthur Utley

When players put their dreams on hold, good things can happen. They certainly do at L.C. Bird. The Skyhawks, No. 2 in the Times-Dispatch Top 10, put their best 11 players on defense, even if they don’t exactly fit the mold of the position. This mismatch is best exemplified by senior Xavier Myles, who weighs 190 pounds. He plays defensive end, which at the Division I level is often manned by 270or 280-pound giants. Not surprisingly, Myles had to deal with growing pains at his new position.

The Highland Springs football team decided to visit Varina last night after playing an afternoon game. What they saw was a team that’s peaking at the right time. Trey Johnson had his usual big game—271 yards and four touchdowns—but there was no player of the game this week, just a whole team that deserves recognition. The No. 4 Blue Devils put up 30 first-quarter points on the way to a 50-14 blowout of No. 10 Cosby. It started as an intriguing nondistrict matchup and ended with a running clock.

NEW YORK While headlines focused this week on potential long-term risks of head injuries to pro football players, Jarek Dombrowski was just hoping to get through his school days without the headaches coming back. Jarek, 16, returned to high school in Norwich, Conn., on Monday after a neurologist sent him home for most of last week. He suffered a concussion during football practice, and while the nausea and blurred vision he endured in class the next day had gone away, the headaches continued.
