A timeout did the trick for the Cosby field hockey team. The Titans trailed Mills Godwin midway through the first half of their Central Region tournament semifinal last night at Clover Hill. The Eagles were playing their game and had taken the Titans out of theirs. “We got our heads back in it and started playing like we knew how to play field hockey,“ Cosby midfielder Kelsey Powell said.

When players put their dreams on hold, good things can happen. They certainly do at L.C. Bird. The Skyhawks, No. 2 in the Times-Dispatch Top 10, put their best 11 players on defense, even if they don’t exactly fit the mold of the position. This mismatch is best exemplified by senior Xavier Myles, who weighs 190 pounds. He plays defensive end, which at the Division I level is often manned by 270or 280-pound giants. Not surprisingly, Myles had to deal with growing pains at his new position.

Keep it simple. That’s the mantra the coaches preach at Powhatan. “We don’t run a whole lot of plays,“ coach Jim Woodson said. “It took me a long time to figure that out as a coach. At the beginning, I figured I’d try to outsmart everybody and trick them and have so many plays they wouldn’t know how to defend it. We were tricking ourselves because we didn’t know how to do it.“

The Matoaca High School football team slid into its bye week 0-3. No panic or season-is-over commiseration ensued. Warriors coach Pat Manuel already had prepared his squad for the possibility of a rough start while facing C.D. Hylton, L.C. Bird and Manchester. Unimportant, he kept telling them, because they were nondistrict games. The season really started with district play in Game 4, Manuel preached, for a simple reason: If you’re a Division 6 team in the Central Region, as is Matoaca, you pretty much have to win your district to get in the playoffs.
