Another strong postseason run came to an end quicker than the Mills Godwin girls volleyball wanted it to come. Loudoun Valley, the Northwest Region champions, turned back the Eagles 25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 26-24 last night in the Virginia High School League Group AAA tournament at the Siegel Center. Loudoun Valley (22-5) will play Northern Region champion South County of Lorton (25-3) in tomorrow’s final at 2:30 p.m. South County eliminated Eastern Region winner Cox of Virginia Beach in five sets in the opening semifinal.

The first-string defense for the Powhatan football team hasn’t spent much time on the field this season, especially in the second half of games. The Indians’ defense has four shutouts to its credit and has allowed just 47 points the entire year. The rub is that only one opponent finished with a winning record. The combined records of the 10 opponents is 33-64.

What he did: In last week’s 17-16 victory over Varina, he had quite a night. The 6-foot, 184-pound wide receiver caught three passes for 72 yards, including a 39-yard reception that set up a Highland Springs field goal, picked the ball out of the air after a blocked field goal attempt and returned it 70 yards for a TD at the end of the first half, and - if that weren’t enough - was one of two Springers with an interception. Age: 18 Other sports: Track Favorite thing besides sports: “I like to listen to music and draw [pen and pencil].“ Three words his friends would use to describe him: “Funny, outgoing, sociable.“ Strengths: “Positive attitude; promoting togetherness; I can catch [the ball] and make a play.“ Working to improve: “Running my routes, getting better at catching the ball. You always work on that.“ Biggest challenge: “Balancing school work and practice.“ Best sports memory: “Beating Varina. It was my last home game, and to end it on a note like that.“ Sports person he admires most: “Jerry Rice [for his receiving].“ Favorite food: Fried chicken Pet peeve: “Ignorant people.“ Possession he can’t do without: “My cellphone.“ If he had one wish: “That my mom could have her own art studio.“ One thing about you most people don’t know: “That I’m shy until people get to know me.“ - Arthur Utley

Howard scored in the 69th minute, but Tyler Phillips scored in the final minute of regulation to revive 11th-seeded Paul VI’s hopes of an upset. Thomas Hatcher and Colscon Wiley also converted their attempts in the penalty shootout for the Cougars. How many more times will the Cosby and Clover Hill boys play each other? Will the James River girls finally make it through to the region final and a berth in the state tournament?

Deep Run junior Erica Dobbs had a fairly simple, straightforward strategy for the Central Region girls cross country meet: find Midlothian’s Kathleen Lautzenheiser and follow in her footsteps for as long as possible, then win a sprint to the finish line. Executing her plan to topple the two-time defending regional champion was considerably more difficult. But as she rounded the final turn running stride for stride with Lautzenheiser, Dobbs unleashed the finishing kick that earned her all-state honors in the 1,600 meters and pulled away to win her first region title by 5 seconds yesterday at Pole Green Park.
