James River senior Ted Richardson finished yesterday’s Virginia High School League Group AAA boys’ championship cross country meet with a huge grin on his face. It didn’t leave as he sat on the benches after the finish, and it certainly didn’t leave as he walked up the chute to be greeted by family, teammates and supporters. The senior from James River High School completed his first running season back from a stress fracture with an individual state title.

Deep Run junior Erica Dobbs had a fairly simple, straightforward strategy for the Central Region girls cross country meet: find Midlothian’s Kathleen Lautzenheiser and follow in her footsteps for as long as possible, then win a sprint to the finish line. Executing her plan to topple the two-time defending regional champion was considerably more difficult. But as she rounded the final turn running stride for stride with Lautzenheiser, Dobbs unleashed the finishing kick that earned her all-state honors in the 1,600 meters and pulled away to win her first region title by 5 seconds yesterday at Pole Green Park.

He blew through the finish line at Pole Green Park late yesterday afternoon, then decelerated, then slowed to a walk as a meet official recorded his race number. Once he reached the end of the chute, Ted Richardson of James River, the newly minted Central Region cross country champion, turned and paused for a moment as runner-up Grant Pollock of Mills Godwin approached.

Soccer was Grant Pollock’s sport from the time he began playing for the Richmond Strikers as a 5-year-old until he was a junior in high school. Sometimes one-sport specialists get tired of their sport and look for a new course of action. Pollock got tired of soccer and turned his attention to cross country last year as a junior at Mills Godwin.

Lizzie Powell was excited, happy and speechless. All for a good reason. Powell, a junior at Patrick Henry, set a state record in the girls pole vault yesterday at the state Group AAA meet at Todd Stadium. She vaulted 12-3, three inches more than the previous mark. Powell set a meet record for the second week in a row. She cleared the bar at 12-1 in the Central Region meet last Friday and broke her sister’s region mark in the process.

With victories in seven events and solid team depth, St. Christopher’s won the Virginia Prep League track and field championship in convincing fashion yesterday. The Saints, who last took the outdoor title in 1987, amassed 179 points to finish well ahead of runner-up Fork Union (113). Collegiate (82) placed third and Woodberry Forest (71) fourth.

Javonne Tyson-King Clover Hill track What she did: The Cavaliers’ sprinter, a senior, was a double-winner at the Gus Lacy Track Classic at Fork Union Military Academy. She won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.45 and followed that with a 26.03 to win the 200. Her favorite event is the 400, but she did not run that at the Gus Lacy. Age: 17 Three words your friends would use to describe you: “Silly, hard-working, fun.“ Strengths: “Running fast and I’m a team player.“ Toughest opponent other than yourself: “My family. They expect me to do the best I can.“ I’m working to improve: “My turnovers so I can run faster in the 100, 200 and 400.“ Favorite food: Cinnamon Pop Tarts Favorite ice cream: Butter pecan Best sports memory: “When I was in the 10th grade, I finished second in the state [Michigan] in the 100.“ Biggest challenge: “The 100. The race seems so short, like it’s not enough.“ If she had one wish: “Win at states in any of my events.“ Possession you can’t do without: “My flatiron [for her hair].“ Sports person he admires most: 2008 Olympic gold medalist Allyson Felix What’s on your iPod: “I have a variety of music.“ Facebook or MySpace: MySpace One thing about you most people don’t know: She moved to the Richmond area from Pontiac, Mich., in September. “Nobody knows who I am.“—Arthur Utley

It didn’t come easily, but now Atlee’s Ben DeJarnette has a Central Region team title to go with his individual-events collection. The senior was a prohibitive favorite to claim yesterday’s 3,200 at the Ashe Center—and he didn’t disappoint, breaking the tape in 9:56.6. He would have gone faster if he hadn’t lagged back, urging teammate Andrew Cantanese to keep the faith.

Sisters Erica and Courtney Dobbs are like a twin-engine jet.
