When a fluke accident cost Jimmie Johnson a huge chunk of his points lead, he knew there was no more room for error in his bid to win a NASCAR record fourth consecutive championship. But when it came time to plot a strategy for Phoenix International Raceway, playing it safe was never an option. Johnson cruised to a dominating victory yesterday that moved him to the edge of history, winning the fourth race of this Chase for the Sprint Cup championship in what his rivals considered a “statement” showing.

AVONDALE, Ariz.—Jimmie Johnson has such a stranglehold on the championship that it’s out of reach for every driver besides Mark Martin. And his only chance likely would require a major stumble by the points leader. So what incentive does that leave for the rest of the drivers the final two races of the season? Quite a lot. Everyone in the field has motivation to finish the season strong. Some drivers want a win, while others are trying to improve their spot in the final standings. There are opportunities to test new ideas for next year, as well as a chance to make personnel changes before the offseason.

CHARLOTTE, N.C.—This season was supposed to have the most competitive title race since the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format began six years ago. Instead, it’s once again been the Jimmie Johnson show. With only two races remaining to crown NASCAR’s 2009 champion, Mark Martin is the only driver with a realistic shot of dethroning Johnson. But with a 73-point cushion, Johnson only needs to hold steady the next two weeks to win a record fourth consecutive championship.

He was sure Busch had enough fuel to stay in front to the finish yesterday in Texas, where Rogers made his debut atop the pit box for the No. 18 Toyota. Rogers was wrong by three laps. That’s when Busch ran out of gas just as he was starting another trip around the 1½-mile high-banked oval. Busch has won each of his past five truck races, extending a streak that began at Bristol in August. Last night, he beat Matt Crafton by 0.725 seconds at the 1½-mile, high-banked Texas track. “That’s cool, man. That’s a pretty proud accomplishment,“ Busch said. “I’ve wanted to win a truck race here for a long time.“

TALLADEGA, Ala.—Jamie McMurray was the unlikely winner of an uncharacteristically dull race at Talladega Superspeedway, where a ban on bump-drafting forced most competitors to treat the event as a slow Sunday drive. The day started with a stern warning from NASCAR President Mike Helton against the aggressive driving that has turned Talladega into the most exciting track on the circuit. What followed was an anesthetized first 450 miles, with long periods of single-file traffic and no driver willing to defy NASCAR’s order not to bump through the corners.

Juan Pablo Montoya had had it with Jeff Gordon, and when he felt Gordon began crowding him in the turns yesterday at Martinsville Speedway, he got physical. And he made no apologies afterward. “It’s just every time we’ve been around racing against him, he runs the hell out of me,“ Montoya said. “He moved me out of the way before, and he was starting to do the same here today. MARTINSVILLE—Denny Hamlin of Chesterfield County turned a dominant car into a winner today at Martinsville Speedway, passing Jimmie Johnson with 138 laps to go and holding off the Chase leader on a series of late restarts. Helped by a long green-flag run that established him as the dominant car, Hamlin pulled away after a restart with 52 laps to go and ended Johnson’s remarkable run of five trips to Victory Lane in the last six races at the shortest circuit in NASCAR’s Sprint Cup Series.

The NASCAR veteran began the year as the newest driver at Richard Childress Racing, taking over the wheel of the No. 07 Chevrolet and hoping to revive a career that couldn’t get out of neutral at Hendrick Motorsports. Mears has done that, putting himself 18th in points entering tomorrow night’s race at Martinsville, ahead of established RCR stars Jeff Burton and Kevin Harvick. CONCORD, N.C.—Kyle Busch is feeling better, thanks. The NASCACR star shrugged off walking pneumonia to dominate the Nationwide Series race at Lowe’s Motor Speedway last night, picking up his seventh victory of the year to extend his points lead over Carl Edwards with four races remaining. Mike Bliss was second, followed by Dave Blaney and Brian Vickers. Edwards finished fifth to drop 195 points behind Busch.

If all Antron Brown did was drive a Top Fuel dragster, he would be unusual. After all, there aren’t that many Top Fuel drivers in the country. Only 15 are here at Virginia Motorsports Park this weekend for what is normally a 16-car field. But in addition to his Top Fuel job, Brown he is an African-American in a sport where not many African-Americans make their living.
