The Twilight Saga: New Moon,“ also known as “Twilight: The Squeakquel,“ is actually pretty good—a tick better than the first “Twilight,“ which wasn’t bad either. The first “Twilight,“ a lower-budget and scruffier affair directed by Catherine Hardwicke, may have been lame in the visual magic department, but its stars and their smoldering separate-beds bedroom eyes did a valiantly angst-y job in launching a major franchise. The second film in the series is bigger, better in the effects and more vibrant visually, which is crucial—the heroine, Bella, is an Olympic-level mope, and if “New Moon” matched this character’s mood with the visual palette of the first film, we’d all be dead.

‘The Blind Side’ focuses on the feel-good

The redemption-minded sports flick “The Blind Side” serves its inspiration straight-up with no twist. Writer-director John Lee Hancock wisely lets the true story of Michael Oher—the teen who found a home and, eventually, football stardom, after being adopted by a wealthy Memphis family—speak for itself. That direct focus delivers a feel-good crowd-pleaser, but it also drains the film of the kind of subtle nuances that might have separated it from other Hallmark-like efforts.

Some actors are so much fun you’ll even watch them in a film you didn’t care about. Michael Sheen is one of those performers. You probably know him as Tony Blair in “The Queen,“ David Frost in “Frost/Nixon” (or a werewolf in the “Underworld” movies). In “The Damned United” he once again plays a real-life character: Brit soccer manager Brian Clough, who in 1974 rose to the top of his profession and managed to crash and burn in a matter of weeks.

Cult classics, such as Ed Wood’s films and “Showgirls,“ are often defined by their flaws as much as their merits. “Boondock Saints,“ the 1999 film that achieved cult status on DVD and now has spawned a sequel, certainly had plenty of flaws. It was a ridiculously over-the-top action film about a pair of Irish-American twins who set out with guns and some reckless and boozy bravado to rid Boston of criminals and Mafia.

Afun tone is undermined by disjointed storytelling in George Clooney’s “The Men Who Stare at Goats,“ and it all starts with the disclaimer that opens the movie: “More of this is true than what you might imagine.“ This wry comment serves as a nod and a wink from the filmmakers, a license to do what they will to Jon Ronson’s amusing nonfiction account of the U.S. military’s hush-hush research into psychic warfare and espionage.

Cameron Diaz and James Marsden have a terrible moral dilemma in Richard Kelly’s “The Box”: Press a button on a mysterious container, and they’ll get $1 million and someone they don’t know will die. What button, on whose box, did Kelly push to get the money to make this awful, preposterous thriller? If Hollywood were a three-strikes-you’re-out kind of place, Kelly would be flirting with permanent banishment. His first film, cult hit “Donnie Darko,“ was an intriguing foul ball, muddled and pretentious but showing signs of a strong talent in search of his voice.

It’s getting downright batty trying to keep all these vampires straight. You have your traditional vampires (“Nosferatu”), your blond slayer foils (“Buffy: The Vampire Slayer”), your sexy vamps (“True Blood”), your Euro children vampires (“Let the Right One In”) and your melancholy teenage variety (“Twilight”). The latest entry to this crowded field is “Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant.“ The source material this time is a series of young adult books known as “Cirque du Freak” or “The Saga of Darren Shan,“ written by Darren O’Shaughnessy, who writes under his protagonist’s name, Darren Shan.

Considering the risks Amelia Earhart took, losing her life in the call of aviation, Hilary Swank and director Mira Nair don’t put much on the line in their film biography “Amelia.“ Swank and Nair play it safe, leaving Earhart as remote and muted as she is in the black-and-white photos and news footage at the film’s end.

The animated “Astro Boy” is a shiny hodgepodge of “Pinocchio,“ “WALL-E,“ “Oliver Twist,“ “Gladiator” and “Superman,“ with some obvious visual touches taken from “The Iron Giant.“ As its own entity, though, it’s pretty forgettable. Director David Bowers (“Flushed Away”), who co-wrote the script with Timothy Hyde Harris (“Kindergarten Cop,“ “Space Jam”), gets some help from a lively voice cast that includes Freddie Highmore, Kristen Bell, Bill Nighy and Nathan Lane, and the Art Deco look of the film’s architecture has a classic appeal.

The film, “Dr. Bonesaw,“ is the story of a patient who escapes a massacre at a mental institution, only to unleash her own bloodbath upon a lusty hospital staff, with—you guessed it—her bonesaw hand. Where the Wild Things Are,“ the book, is just 339 words long. But in turning it into “Where the Wild Things Are,“ the movie, director Spike Jonze has expanded the basic story with a breathtaking visual scheme and stirring emotional impact. It’s a gorgeous film: This may sound contradictory, but it’s intricate and rough-hewn yet dreamlike and earthy. What keeps it from reaching complete excellence is the thinness of the script, which Jonze co-wrote with Dave Eggers.

The true-life drama “The Boys Are Back” delicately and deftly finds a balance that’s hard to strike: It depicts death, and the way a family rebuilds and redefines itself afterward, without being excessively sentimental. Director Scott Hicks’ film, with its dreamlike, sun-splashed landscapes of southern Australia, is visually arresting (the work of cinematographer Greig Fraser, who recently shot Jane Campion’s luminous “Bright Star”).

A surprise winner of this year’s foreign-language Oscar, beating out front-runners “Waltz With Bashir” and “The Class,“ the Japanese dramedy “Departures” has its moments but is ultimately overlong and too melodramatic. Director Yojiro Takita and writer Kundo Koyama begin with an intriguing premise, though: After the symphony orchestra he plays for disbands, cellist Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki) leaves Tokyo and returns to his hometown with his sunny, supportive wife, Mika (Ryoko Hirosue).

Couples Retreat” suggests what life might have been like if the guys from “Swingers” had grown up, moved to the suburbs and turned into lame, sitcommy cliches. Jon Favreau and Vince Vaughn team up again, on screen and on the script (along with Dana Fox), for this broad comedy about four couples who go on a tropical vacation together. In theory, they’re all there to support their friends Jason (Jason Bateman) and Cynthia (Kristen Bell) as they try to save their marriage through the couples’ counseling the resort offers. Little do they know they’ll get sucked into agonizing therapy sessions that reveal their own rifts. For example: Vaughn’s character, Dave, doesn’t care about picking out tile to redo the kitchen. His wife, Ronnie (Malin Akerman), does. It’s a laugh riot if you think Paul Reiser’s “Couplehood” is funny—and we haven’t even gotten to their painfully cute young son whose defining personality trait is urinating and pooping in inappropriate places.

You’d be justified in thinking you’ve visited “Zombieland” before. After all, there has been no shortage of zombies at the movies in recent years, just as there has been no shortage of vampires. And within that genre, a crop of zombie comedies has arisen, from “Shaun of the Dead” to “Zombie Strippers” to “Dead Snow.“ Like “Shaun” before it, though, “Zombieland” mostly finds that tricky balance of the laugh-out-loud funny and the make-you-jump scary, of deadpan laughs and intense energy. It’s a total blast, even if the story is a bit thin, and it does run out of steam toward the end, but thankfully our trip to “Zombieland” is appropriately quick.

Drew Barrymore has forged a persona as an actress and producer with movies that exude a playful sense of girl power, so it only makes sense that “Whip It,“ her first feature as a director, would share that same sort of vibe. What is surprising, though, is Barrymore’s ability to find just the right tone all the time, which would be a difficult feat for any first-time filmmaker to achieve—even one who’s spent her life on movie sets.

LOS ANGELES—A former prosecutor says he made up a story he told a film crew about advising a judge handling Roman Polanski’s sex case to send the director to prison. In “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired,“ David F. Wells is depicted as conferring with a trial judge more than 30 years ago about Polanski’s case. Wells said in the documentary that the judge took his advice in deciding to renege on a plea bargain and give Polanski additional prison time.

Look for these new DVD releases, now on store shelves. “Away We Go”: Burt (John Krasinski) and Verona (Maya Rudolph) find out that Verona is pregnant. When they go to tell Burt’s parents (Catherine O’Hara and Jeff Daniels), they discover that the expectant grandparents plan to move to Europe before the baby is born. That development sends Burt and Verona on a journey to find a new definition of themselves as an expanded family unit. Written by Dave Eggers and Vendela Vida and directed by Sam Mendes, the film, at least at first blush, feels like a welcome respite from the false happily-ever-afters of most mainstream movies. But mostly, Verona is a mirror to the people that she and Burt encounter on their road trip. 1:38. Rated R.

Surrogates” is itself a surrogate, a kind of stand-in for many of the sci-fi movies of the recent past: In it, you’ll recognize the ideas of “Blade Runner,“ “Minority Report” and even “WALL-E.“ The Bruce Willis action flick opens with two murders—the first in years in a quasi-present day Boston. Technology has advanced enough so that nearly everyone has a surrogate—or “surry” for short. While reclining at home and plugged into a machine, people control a robotic version of themselves that safely maneuvers through the world with all of its slings and arrows.

Jennifer’s Body,“ the second screenplay from Diablo Cody after her Oscar-winning debut smash, “Juno,“ is so chock-full of her quirky trademarks, it almost plays like a parody of something she’d write. The self-consciously clever dialogue, the gratuitous pop-culture references, the made-up phrases intended to convey a specific high-school ethos—they’re all there. Even though fembot Megan Fox is an excellent fit to spit out these witty quips, it’s all so familiar. It makes you wonder whether Cody has any other weapons in her arsenal.

The exclamation point in the title is your first clue that Steven Soderbergh’s intentions are more than a little askew with “The Informant!“ Then you notice Matt Damon’s helmet hair, his poufy mustache, his corny sportswear and the paunch where the “Bourne” trilogy star’s abs used to be. And once the strains of Marvin Hamlisch’s score begin—an ideal accompaniment to the faded, ‘70s-style cinematography—you know you’re in some parallel universe.

Anna Wintour’s eyes are green, we learn from the documentary “The September Issue,“ in which she actually takes off her trademark, oversized sunglasses and even lets a smile slip loose from time to time. But that doesn’t mean the notoriously icy editor-in-chief of Vogue magazine ever truly puts down her guard. Director R.J. Cutler and his crew spent eight months roaming the halls of the Conde Nast publication and accompanying Wintour to meetings, fashion shows and glamorous events with designers and stars.

Look for these new DVD releases, now on store shelves. “The Country Teacher”: Two-thirds of the way into “The Country Teacher,“ we see country-bumpkin mom Marie, a weathered, loveless woman with loose red pigtails and overalls, cleaning up a vomit-splattered floor. We get the feeling that quite a few of the characters in Czech director Bohdan Slama’s latest film have been wiping up the stuff all their lives. When a young schoolteacher, Peter (Pavel Liska, a Slama regular), from Prague comes to teach the backwoods local kids, Peter and Marie become fast friends, distracting each other from their loneliness.

Ten years ago, Mike Judge satirized the absurdities of the workplace experience from the perspective of put-upon employees with “Office Space.“ It didn’t do much when it came out, but it became a cult favorite on cable and home video, to the point where it changed the way you looked at the common stapler. Now, Judge is back to the daily grind with “Extract,“ but this time, the writer-director tells his wacky working tales from the boss’ point of view: that of Jason Bateman’s Joel Reynold, owner of a flavor-extract factory. It’s doubtful that this comedy will grab its audience in the same way, though. Judge’s characters are so one-note and their misadventures so ridiculous that it’s hard to get attached to them or care about how they turn out.
