If you’ve attended a classic-rock concert the past few years, you might have noticed that a significant faction of the audience for artists such as Aerosmith, Paul McCartney, Elton John and Billy Joel is composed of pre-teens and teens. Wait, aren’t kids supposed to think their parents’ music is eye-rollingly unhip? And aren’t parents supposed to be yelling at their kids to “turn that nonsense down” since the younger generation is expected to be listening to some newfangled band with the shelf life of an open container of milk?

The Richmond Symphony began its new Lollipops concert series yesterday with a program well-suited for children and the adults who brought them. If this concert is any indication, the series will be entertaining but not infantile, enriching but not overtly instructional. The concert began with four movements from John Williams’ “Suite for Orchestra from ‘Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.‘“ With its immediately familiar tunes, it was a good choice to put everyone at ease. My concert companions, ages 6 and 12, definitely felt the magic.

LOS ANGELES Michael Jackson’s This Is It” comes too late in the year to be considered for a documentary Oscar, but the film about the late King of Pop’s preparations for a series of comeback concerts could qualify for other Hollywood honors, including the Academy Award for best picture. The film, which opened around the globe Tuesday and Wednesday, has already earned rousing praise from fans and critics, who say it restores Jackson’s reputation as a world-class entertainer.

La Bohème” premiered to audience apathy and critical scorn in Turin, Italy, in 1896. Then the world weighed in. Virginia Opera’s production, which opened to a sold-out Carpenter Theatre on Friday and will repeat today, demonstrates many of the reasons Giacomo Puccini’s opera set in bohemian Paris scores so high on the operatic hit parade.

Metallica When: 7 p.m. Saturday at John Paul Jones Arena (Charlottesville). Lamb of God opens. Tickets: $51.50-$71.50 Info: http://www.johnpauljonesarena.com or (888) 575-8497 The latest: Newly minted members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, touted as the fourth-highest-selling artist in SoundScan history with more than 50 million records sold in the U.S. since 1991, boast their own “Guitar Hero” installment and winners of a Best Metal Performance Grammy in February. Think it has been a good year for Metallica? The hard rockers, whose double-bass drum assault from Lars Ulrich and twin guitar sizzles from James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett have rarely come up for air since the early’80s, have been anchored by bassist Rob Trujillo since 2003. His arrival seems to have steadied the band, which released its most robust album in years with last fall’s “Death Magnetic.“ Sound bite: Richmond’s metal whiz, Lamb of God, is opening the show. Metallica specifically tapped the band to open the 25 dates on this run.

Tickets: $25-$127.50 Info: http://www.ticketmaster.com or (800) 745-3000 The latest: Taking a cue from AC/DC, KISS last week released “Sonic Boom,“ its first studio album in 11 years, which is being sold exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club. Ever the cunning marketers, Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, the CEOs of this operation, have packaged the project as a three-disc collection containing the new release, a disc of re-recorded hits and a six-song live DVD recorded this spring in Argentina. The best part? The package is selling for a mere $12. Hey, it’s cheaper than a KISS Kasket ($4,500, in case you were wondering). Joining Simmons and Stanley on stage this go-around (wasn’t their Richmond Coliseum show in 2000 part of a “farewell” tour?) are Eric Singer on drums and Tommy Thayer on guitar instead of Peter Criss and Ace Frehley. Sound bite: Three weeks ago, KISS was finally included on the ballot of potential inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame class of 2010—10 years after it reached the eligibility milestone.

AC/DC When: 8 p.m. tomorrow at Verizon Center (D.C.) Tickets: $92.50 Info: http://www.ticketmaster.com or (800) 745-3000 The latest: Almost exactly a year ago, AC/DC’s first studio album in eight years, “Black Ice,“ arrived exclusively at Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club—a gamble that paid off with the ultimate jackpot: a debut at No. 1 on the Billboard album chart, 785,000 copies sold its first week, and now, sales hovering in the 2.5 million range in the U.S. alone. The band’s notoriously electrifying live shows meant that its worldwide tour would result in major ticket sales. Indeed, according to concert trade magazine Pollstar, AC/DC’s tour grossed $150.6 million in the first half of 2009 and played to a total of more than 1.7 million people in 61 shows in Europe and the U.S. The band played a sold-out show at the Verizon Center in November, but, given the aforementioned numbers, can you blame it for returning? Sound bite: This is the band’s first date back after postponing the first six dates of this new fall leg while singer Brian Johnson recuperated from a medical procedure involving ulcers. The band releases “Backtracks,“ a three-CD/two-DVD box set of rare studio and live tracks, on Nov. 10.

The best thing about the release this week of the new/old Michael Jackson song “This Is It”? That Paul Anka might finally get some Grammy cred. The worst thing? That it would be for this forgettable, fizz-less trifle. The Grammy-less Anka, the wizard behind such gems as the theme music for “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” and Frank Sinatra’s signature “My Way” (Anka wrote the English lyrics), quickly addressed the Jackson estate this week, hours after “This Is It” was released online, to claim his co-writing credit.

LONDON—Michael Jackson has returned to the airwaves with a new song—the first from an upcoming documentary on the troubled superstar. It is the first new song by Jackson to be released since his sudden death in Los Angeles on June 25. The singer, who had not released new material in years, sounds confident on the song, which features his trademark vocal style with lush backing vocals by his brothers, the Jacksons.

When a cattle rancher from Montana is feeling the funk from a band of 18 go-go music experts from Washington, it’s apparent that the Richmond Folk Festival has done its job. That was the scene late afternoon yesterday when Wylie Gustafson stuck around the Ukrop’s/First Market Bank Stage after his set of western music with his band, The Wild West. As Trouble Funk, the airtight groove masters specializing in molasses-thick beats interacted with a crowd of several thousand, Gustafson, in his cowboy hat and boots, bobbed his head and waved his arms to “Pump Me Up,“ a T.F. standard.

The 40-date Shine All Night Tour starring Martina McBride and Trace Adkinskicks off next month and a date is etched in for March 12 at the Richmond Coliseum. Keep some holiday cash aside—tickets go on sale Jan. 29. . . . To pump his new album, “Southern Voice,“ out Oct. 20, Tim McGraw will make two appearances on “Late Night With David Letterman” Monday and Friday—and the two performances will be followed by mini concerts, called “Live on Letterman,“ which will be broadcast on CBS’ Web site (http://www.cbs.com) . . . . Fittingly, Alice Cooper has a new single available on iTunes called “Keepin’ Halloween Alive.“ The song also can be purchased as a Digital 45 on the site with a vocal-free version and digital booklet. Fans also can enter the Cooper-oke Video Contest at http://www.nightswithalicecooper.com, where they can upload videos of themselves singing their version of the song. . . . MTV has received permission from Adam “DJ AM” Goldstein’s family to air the documentary series “Gone Too Far” on Monday at 10 p.m. Goldstein filmed the series, which follows a group of young addicts in recovery, shortly before he died of an accidental overdose in August. . . . The charity special “Idol Gives Back” will return during “American Idol” in April, after taking a one-year hiatus. . . . If you’ve noticed “The Pulse” on Sirius XM sounding a bit different, it’s because the channel has tweaked its format from “The’90s and now” to playing modern adult contemporary hits “of the 2000s and today.“

Abanjo and a double bass walk into a bar. The bartender says, “What is this, some kind of bad joke?“ Indeed, the two instruments are an unlikely pair. A banjo’s brash sound and a bass’s cool tones can be a jarring combination. Banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck and bass master Edgar Meyer have made it work, performing together in ensembles and as a duo for more than 20 years. But Sunday night at the Modlin Center, the addition of a third instrument brought the odd couple together in a completely new way.

La Gran Banda: A traditional “papayera” band, a staple along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, can accumulate up to 20 members. This Miami-based version, led by Henry March, who emigrated from Colombia to South Florida in the mid-‘80s, is slightly smaller but no less infectious. Brass and percussion will meld for a rollicking performance.

The Jerry Douglas Band: His face is probably familiar because of his frequent presence onstage with Alison Krauss & Union Station. His sound might be recognizable because Douglas is regarded as the pre-eminent dobro player in the world (for the uninitiated, a dobro is an acoustic guitar with a metal resonator placed where the sound hole usually resides). Douglas was also instrumental—no pun intended—in creating the soundtrack to “O Brother, Where Art Thou?“ with T-Bone Burnett.

LOS ANGELES—Michael Jackson’s arms were covered with punctures and he had tattooed eyebrows and lips, but he wasn’t the sickly skeleton of a man portrayed by tabloids, according to his autopsy report obtained by The Associated Press. In fact, the Los Angeles County coroner’s report shows Jackson was a fairly healthy 50-year-old before he died of an overdose. His 136 pounds were in the acceptable range for a 5-foot-9 man. His heart was strong with no sign of plaque buildup. And his kidneys and most other major organs were normal.

U2 has always been a thoughtful band, but with each tour they manage to add new layers of reflection. The star of the show is still Bono, who, despite looking eerily like Robin Williams with a brogue, continues to command attention with his Messianic poses and chest-thumping passion. But the band’s ego is in an interesting place on this tour. The 164-foot stage, a crustaceanlike hump that could have sprung from the imagination of George Lucas, along with the 360-degree LED screen that circled its pulsing red core and two moving bridges that transported the musicians between stage levels, is probably the grandest structure ever to house a live show.
