Things had gone so badly for Andrew Howard that when the game was on the line, even he was surprised to hear his name called. Howard is the kicker for the University of Richmond football team. Yesterday against William and Mary, he made his first field goal from 42 yards. Then, he missed badly from 28 yards and not so badly from 40 yards, all before halftime.

Cynicism comes easily when the topic is college athletics. So much money is in play. Coaches who earn seven-figure salaries talk about “student-athletes,“ but their primary interest is the “athlete” and contract bonus clauses. Then, there are those “student-athletes” who show up at a gas station armed with a pellet gun or get involved with the community through late-night fights in bars.

Poor Bill Belichick. His coaching career has come to this: He has two defenders, Al Groh and me. Groh and Belichick have been on several NFL staffs together, so that figures. As for me, that’s a hard one PAUL WOODY to believe, isn’t it? I’m no great fan of Belichick and the way he runs his team. He treats the smallest piece of information as if it were a state secret. He pushes the rules to the limit and beyond.

Everyone was beginning to wonder. The Washington Redskins beat Denver 27-17 yesterday, the first time this season the Redskins have surpassed the 17-point barrier. It also was the first time this season the Redskins beat a team with a winning record. All it took was a solid running game, no turnovers, decent blocking by the offensive line and the Redskins’ punter and holder, Hunter Smith, throwing a touchdown off a fake-field goal play.

Just when it seemed U.Va. fans could let the soothing thoughts of the upcoming basketball season wash away another bad gridiron experience, here comes Al Groh, with his contract-renewal offense and hope-for-tomorrow game plans. CHARLOTTE So it’s true that no good deed goes unpunished. Byron Westbrook, who spent two seasons on the Washington Redskins practice squad and worked so hard to make the 53-man roster this season, was just doing his job, trying to protect punt returner Antwaan Randle El. And then Westbrook’s world, as well as that of the Redskins, turned upside down. Or right side up. Or every which way but loose. This much is certain: it was not sunny-side up.

Youth will be served, but more often than not, experience carries the day. With 1:07 left in the game and victory just six yards away for the James Madison Dukes, redshirt freshman quarterback Justin Thorpe took the snap, stepped back, then darted up the middle. He was almost around Richmond nose tackle Martin Parker and things were looking good for the Dukes, except for one thing.

The ideal place for government involvement in sports is on the sidelines. The ideal rarely is met. Politicians use public funds to build stadiums.

The question comes frequently these days. Should a baseball stadium be built in Shockoe Bottom or on the Boulevard? The answer? Neither. The Short Pump area in Henrico County makes the most sense for the region. The stadium in Shockoe Bottom is supposed to serve as the anchor around which condominiums, a hotel, retail shops and restaurants will be built.

NASCAR needs to revisit points system

Consistency has become too important to NASCAR. The holy grail in NASCAR is the Sprint Cup points championship. In order to compete for the grail, drivers must rank among the top 12 after 26 races. They then spend 10 races running for the Cup while the others get in the way. Too much emphasis is placed on top 10 finishes in Races 1 through 26, and not enough is placed on winning.

When Michael Vick applies for reinstatement to the NFL, he must hope Commissioner Roger Goodell does not have a nearby copy of the indictment that was filed in U.S. District Court in July of 2007. If Goodell is reminded how the dogs at Bad Newz Kennels were treated—drowned, electrocuted, strangled, shot, slammed to the floor—he never will let the quarterback step on an NFL field again.

In the sports world, the famous often are praised for their exploits on the field. Sometimes, it is difficult to find reason to praise them for what they do off the field. Jason Taylor deserves to be praised for an off-the-field deci sion. Taylor chose family over money, something not often seen in the sports world. Taylor was to earn $8 million, plus $500,000 in bonus money from the Washington Redskins for the 2009 season.

Ryan Zimmerman’s 30-game hitting streak was impressive. When it ended Wednesday, the third baseman for the Washington Nationals was one of only seven players to have a hit in at least 30 straight games in this decade. But as impressive as it was, the former University of Virginia star’s streak pales in comparison to the major-league record.

WILLIAMSBURG IIf 90 percent of success is showing up, and if success really is a matter of hanging on after everyone else has let go, Cristie Kerr is on her way to the top. Kerr showed up for all 18 holes yesterday in the final round of the Michelob Ultra Open at Kingsmill. Her closest competitors did not. Kerr seized an opportunity to win when it pre sented itself.

Last year, Reilley Rankin forgot. This year, her memory is clear, and it has made a great deal of difference in her game. As she was practicing in preparation for the 2009 season, hitting every conceivable shot from every conceivable angle—uphill lies, downhill lies, sidehill lies—a thought came to Rankin. It’s a thought worth remembering no matter what your job.
