WASHINGTON (2-5) AT ATLANTA (4-3) Time: 1 p.m. Line: Falcons by 9 On the air: TV - Fox; radio - WXGI (950), 10 a.m. Inside slant: Redskins’ offense self-destructs, but the defense is OK. After a battle with the Saints, maybe the Falcons won’t bring their ‘A’ game. Wrath of Woody: In addition to apologizing for this season, Redskins owner Dan Snyder also apologized for the 73-0 loss to the Chicago Bears in 1940, for the loss to Miami in Super Bowl VII and the constant traffic backups on the Capital Beltway. ATLANTA - The Atlanta Falcons are eager to break free of their mostly inglorious past, show they can be a team that consistently puts up winning records and contends for the playoffs. Time to end that losing streak. For the first time in Mike Smith’s two years as coach, the Falcons have lost consecutive games. Certainly, there’s no need for panic - Atlanta lost a pair of road games to Dallas (5-2) and unbeaten New Orleans - but this franchise’s mostly grim 43-year history raises doubts any time there’s the least bit of adversity.

PHILADELPHIA—They have played each other with both a Super Bowl and a playoff spot at stake. There was the “Bounty Bowl,“ Emmitt Smith getting stuffed, Eagles fans cheering for a motionless Michael Irvin, and Terrell Owens stoking controversy for each side. Dallas and Philadelphia have lined up against each other 99 times in games that have forged one of the NFL’s most heated rivalries. Somehow it seems fitting the 100th meeting would have something significant on the line.

CHICAGO—The Chicago White Sox acquired Mark Teahen from the Kansas City Royals for Chris Getz and Josh Fields. The trade was announced shortly after the White Sox said they had declined a 2010 option on right fielder Jermaine Dye, 35, who batted .250 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI in 141 games. Teahen batted .271 with a career-high 34 doubles, 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 144 games in 2009, battling a sore back in the final month of the season. He made 99 starts at third base, 31 in right field and three at second base.

INDIANAPOLIS - The injury bug is still haunting the Indianapolis Colts. Cornerback Marlin Jackson and safety Bob Sanders were lost for the season yesterday as the team placed them on injured reserve. Jackson, who missed the second half of the 2008 season after injuring his right knee during practice, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee during a non-contact drill Wednesday. He had been rehabbing the knee after he was hurt against Seattle on Oct. 4.

Ever since the discovery of the wildcat offense, it’s been difficult to take Miami’s Ronnie Brown out of any fantasy lineup. This may be the week where you want to show him the bench, though. Brown is coming off a 27-yard game - which ties his worst output in 21 games since the unveiling of the high school-style scheme - and returns to the stadium where it all began. Tomorrow, he’ll face the Patriots, who surely are still bitter over his 113 yards and four TDs against them in the wildcat’s debut last year.

NHL ROUNDUP BLUE JACKETS 4, THRASHERS 3: Raffi Torres scored two uncontested second-period goals and Columbus held off hosting Atlanta. The Thrashers, coming off road wins at Ottawa and Montreal, lost for the fourth time in five home games. The Blue Jackets took a 2-0 lead in the first period when Jakub Voracek and Derick Brassard each had a goal and an assist, and Columbus never trailed. Mathieu Garon stopped 32 shots in his first start against the Thrashers since 2000. CANADIENS 2, BRUINS 1 (SO): Patrice Bergeron’s goal with 52 seconds left in regulation helped Boston avoid a historic third straight shutout, but Michael Cammalleri scored in the shootout to give visiting Montreal the victory. Boston had not scored in 192 minutes, 6 seconds, dating to Vladimir Sobotka’s goal at 7:02 of the third period against Edmonton on Saturday. The Bruins had not been shut out in three straight games since Eddie Shore and the 1928-29 squad scored just once over five games from Feb. 2-14, 1929. That team went on to earn Boston’s first Stanley Cup title.—From Wire Reports

Now the latest, courtesy coach Bruce Boudreau: “Hopefully, it’s no more than two weeks.“ The league’s two-time reigning MVP has the most serious injury of his NHL career, a “upper-body strain” that could test just how good the Washington Capitals can be this season.

PHILADELPHIA - Cliff Lee’s perfect postseason might not be over yet. Lee could earn a Game 7 start for the Philadelphia Phillies if they force the World Series to a decisive game against the New York Yankees. “As far as my availability, I’m available,“ Lee said. The Phillies’ left-handed ace has been flawless in the postseason with a 4-0 record and a 1.56 ERA in five starts. Manager Charlie Manuel bypassed Lee for a Game 4 start on three days’ rest because he wanted to keep him on his regular schedule.

The Edgerrin James experiment in Seattle is over. The struggling Seahawks cut ties with James yesterday, releasing the backup running back who never provided the pop Seattle hoped to get when it signed the 31-year-old in late August. James’ release was one of a handful of moves Seattle made two days after a 38-17 loss that dropped the Seahawks to 2-5. Seattle also released safety C.J. Wallace and cornerback Travis Fisher.

The Washington Redskins cornerback made it clear yesterday that he’s still no fan of Bobby Petrino, the coach who quit the Falcons during the 2007 season. The former Virginia Tech star and Petrino got in a shouting match on the sideline that year, leading to a $100,000 fine for the player and no doubt hastening the coach’s abrupt departure for the University of Arkansas.

Ted Ginn Jr. returns a kickoff for one of his two touchdowns. Ginn provides kick-start Ted Ginn Jr. put it in high gear, and the Miami Dolphins put away the New York Jets 30-25 in a key AFC East matchup. Ginn became the first player to return two kickoffs for touchdowns in the same quarter since Green Bay’s Travis Williams in 1967. Ginn had returns of 100 and 101 yards against the Jets. Miami (3-4) swept the two regular-season games after the teams met for the second time in 20 days, capping a week filled with trash talk from both sides in a re-ignited rivalry. Before the game, Jets safety Kerry Rhodes and a few Dolphins got into a shoving match on the field. Dolphins linebacker Joey Porter appeared to say something that Rhodes took exception to. Rhodes went over to Porter and shoved him. Porter shoved back as other players got involved, including Jason Taylor, and Rhodes then took a swipe at Dolphins linebacker Cameron Wake before the players were separated. Ovechkin didn’t get a chance to go against fellow Russian Ilya Kovalchuk. Atlanta’s star sat out his first game since breaking his right foot last weekend. LIGHTNING 5, SENATORS 2: Steven Stamkos had two power-play goals and an assist to help Tampa Bay beat Ottawa. Stamkos put Tampa Bay ahead 1-0 at 7:20 of the first when his redirection of Vincent Lecavalier’s shot appeared to go into the net off Ottawa defenseman Filip Kuba. DEVILS 2, BRUINS 1: Dainius Zubrus scored with 1:26 left, and Yann Danis made 31 saves in his first appearance of the season to lead New Jersey over Boston for its sixth consecutive road victory. Zubrus scored off a rebound of Jamie Langenbrunner’s shot. PHILADELPHIA—Alex Rodriguez wound up with a home run after the first video replay review in World Series history, one of three homers by New York, and the Yankees rallied from an early three-run deficit to defeat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5 in Game 3 last night. Down 3-0 and held hitless by lefty Cole Hamels through 31/3 innings, the Yankees suddenly broke loose behind Rodriguez. Nick Swisher homered later, and pitcher Andy Petttitte helped out with an RBI single, drawing pro-New York chants at Citizens Bank Park.

WASHINGTON—Washington Wizards coach Flip Saunders expects forward Caron Butler to return Tuesday night against Cleveland. The two-time All-Star sat out last night’s game against New Jersey because of a bruised left kneecap he suffered when he dived to the floor for a rebound in the second quarter of Friday’s loss to Atlanta. CLEVELAND—Cavaliers guard Delonte West has been actived for the first time this season and expects to play against the Charlotte Bobcats.

PHILADELPHIA—Derek Jeter almost seems to delight in the way this World Series is playing out. Forget all those power hitters. Pitching is priceless. “I told you,“ he said with a smile. Jeter and the New York Yankees totaled four runs in the first two games and still eked out a split at home. Now, the Series shifts to Philadelphia for Game 3 tonight, with Cole Hamels set to start for the Phillies against fellow lefty Andy Pettitte.

CHICAGO—The new owner of the Chicago Cubs didn’t wait long to make a promise: Tom Ricketts says the Cubs are going to win the World Series. But Ricketts and other family members were upbeat as they were introduced at a news conference yesterday at Wrigley Field.
