Castaway Sporting Goods (804 706-9100) reports Frank Gibson caught a 34-pound bluecat from the bank at Dutch Gap. Last week was messy because of the storms, high water and abnormal tides. Most anglers went to ponds and lakes. Things are expected to turn around this week should the weather stay favorable. Dr. Julie Ball reports the northerly direction of the wind will continue to push the inshore water temperature down, encouraging larger rockfish to head our way. School-sized fish are keeping local anglers busy. Schoolies are available in lower bay waters, with the outgoing tide providing the best luck. Casters working the pilings of lower bay structures and the 3rd and 4th island tubes at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel are hooking dozens of fish to 28 inches on Wind Cheaters and Storm Lures.

Dueling with Jynocel Basweti over 26.2 miles, said Michael Wardian, is invariably an all-or-nothing proposition. “Either he’s going to crash and burn or he’s going to run pretty well,“ Wardian said. “Today he ran pretty well, I guess.“ Basweti, a 22-year-old Kenyan, became the SunTrust Richmond Marathon’s first back-to-back winner in five years by delivering an elegant effort yesterday in raw, windy conditions. He finished in 2:18:28—the sixth-fastest time in the event’s 32-year history—and defeated Wardian, the runner-up, by nearly seven minutes.

Salome Kosgei required less than three hours to travel from chacteristically late to stunningly early. Kosgei, a 29-year-old Kenyan, won the women’s portion of yesterday’s SunTrust Richmond Marathon in 2:40:51, the fastest time in six years and the third-fastest in the event’s 32-year history. The 32nd annual SunTrust Richmond Marathon seems likely to begin in chilly, damp conditions and end in the heat of a stirring one-on-one duel. The two most recent winners, defending champion Jynocel Basweti and Mohamed Awol, the top finisher in 2007, appear to be the most capable runners by far in today’s 26.2-mile race through Richmond’s slick streets and still-soggy neighborhoods.

There was only one major agenda item on the table yesterday at the October board meeting of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, but it generated much discussion. At issue was a proposed regulation amendment that would prohibit the hunting of Rocky Mountain elk in Virginia effective immediately. Currently, small numbers of elk - anywhere from dozens to perhaps 200 - roam across the state line from Kentucky, where the species was reintroduced 12 years ago. Virginia hunters can take them on a deer tag during any part of the deer season.

Lance Armstrong told Tour de France winner Alberto Contador to “drop this drivel” after the Spaniard said the personal situation between the Astana teammates was tougher than the race itself. Contador made his comments at a news conference yesterday in Madrid after capturing his second Tour in three years. Although he called the record seven-time Tour champion a great rider, he said their relationship was zero and that he had never had great admiration for him “and I never will,“ according to Reuters. Seeing these comments from Contador, Armstrong wrote on the Twitter social-networking Web site today, “If I were him, I’d drop this drivel and start thanking his team. Without them, he doesn’t win. Hey Pistolero, there is no ‘I’ in team.“
