Tough economic conditions seem not to have affected the SunTrust Richmond Marathon. Race officials say record participation is possible in the 26.2-mile marathon and the 13.1-mile McDonald’s Half Marathon despite a nationwide recession that has chilled sports from NASCAR to high school. The existing records: 5,109 for the marathon, set in 2007; 4,616 for the half marathon, set last year.

NEW YORK - Marilson Gomes dos Santos cried every day for three months. He was 15 and had never been away from home, not even for a night. Now he was living on his own in a strange city to train with a running club. All he wanted was to move back with his family. He talked to his parents all the time, and they encouraged him to stick it out. For all the doubts, Gomes never did quit.

There was only one major agenda item on the table yesterday at the October board meeting of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, but it generated much discussion. At issue was a proposed regulation amendment that would prohibit the hunting of Rocky Mountain elk in Virginia effective immediately. Currently, small numbers of elk - anywhere from dozens to perhaps 200 - roam across the state line from Kentucky, where the species was reintroduced 12 years ago. Virginia hunters can take them on a deer tag during any part of the deer season.

The Eastern Virginia Rivers National Wildlife Refuge Complex invites interested hunters to participate in the 2009 James River National Wildlife Refuge’s muzzleloader and shotgun deer hunts. “Deer hunting has long been a tradition in eastern Virginia. THESSALONIKI, Greece—Usain Bolt lined up for a race against a 5-year-old boy—and lost. The short run through a cheering crowd today, however, certainly won’t diminish Bolt’s status as the top sprinter in the world or dampen expectations for another victory at this weekend’s World Athletics Final. “It was really fun with the kids,“ said Bolt, who was cheered on by about 200 students on a Thessaloniki street and smiled as he let the boy finish first. “A very warm reception.“

The signs are unmistakable: a rustling in basements, attics and garages as gear is brought out and dusted off; targets with hay bales behind them set up in backyards; shot guns and rifles retrieved from their summer-long hibernation and oiled to a high shine. If you see any of these signs associated with your husband or neighbor, that can only mean one thing: He’s getting ready for hunting season. With that time of the year almost upon us, here is a preview of the early seasons - dove, deer (for bow hunters), and turkey - in central Virginia and throughout the state.

Lance Armstrong told Tour de France winner Alberto Contador to “drop this drivel” after the Spaniard said the personal situation between the Astana teammates was tougher than the race itself. Contador made his comments at a news conference yesterday in Madrid after capturing his second Tour in three years. Although he called the record seven-time Tour champion a great rider, he said their relationship was zero and that he had never had great admiration for him “and I never will,“ according to Reuters. Seeing these comments from Contador, Armstrong wrote on the Twitter social-networking Web site today, “If I were him, I’d drop this drivel and start thanking his team. Without them, he doesn’t win. Hey Pistolero, there is no ‘I’ in team.“
