In a year when Virginia traffic deaths fell to the lowest level in decades, three Richmond-area localities still were among the state’s leaders in highway fatalities. Chesterfield County, Henrico County and Richmond accounted for more than 8 percent of the people who died on Virginia roads in 2008. Sixty-eight people died in those three jurisdictions last year, compared with 821 statewide—the lowest level since Virginia began keeping the records more than 40 years ago and a 20 percent decrease from 2007.

Dear readers: One complaint I hear frequently concerns traffic lights that are badly timed. Readers say red lights last far too long, or green lights are too short. Unfortunately, this is one problem I’ve had little luck with. The timing is usually based on traffic studies. When I ask the proper authorities about a specific light, I am usually told that the most recent study indicates that the light is timed correctly to best promote the flow of traffic.

Q:Just wondering: If neighborhoods can become truck-free zones, as you recently mentioned, can winding country roads become bicycle free zones? I was almost run off the road again this week by an SUV trying to avoid hitting a group of bikes he encountered on a curve. I don’t blame the SUV. After all, we both pay license fees and taxes to maintain the roads, and big bucks to support a vehicle that can maintain the speed limit.

Virginia State Police said yesterday that they had recorded three deaths, compared with 18 last year as of Sunday afternoon. Totals for the year were at 257, compared with 317 last year. The collision occurred at 10:25 a.m. as the vehicle carrying Lockhart turned left off westbound U.S. 460 onto state Route 1509 in Bluefield, Va. I learned the hard way. An uninsured mo-ped sideswiped my car, which was legally parked at my home. The damage was more than $2,000. Q:On Interstate 64 going west at mile marker 173 in Goochland County, there are two big sinkholes. I can’t even call them potholes. They’re about 6 feet long and very difficult to see on rainy nights. It is a traffic hazard.—A reader Answer: I shed a tear for this lonely pothole. It was an orphan. No one knew whom it belonged to or who would care for it. I can just picture it sitting forlorn and abandoned. When an asphalt truck goes by, it plaintively asks, “Please, Sir, may I have some more?“

Five people were injured, one severely, yesterday morning in a multiple-vehicle collision that snarled rush-hour traffic on state Route 36 at Fort Lee’s main gate. The crash at about 8:20 a.m. prompted police to close the area to traffic so a MedFlight helicopter could land. Marcia Jones of Danville, a Department of Defense civilian employee who was the most severely injured, was flown to VCU Medical Center. She was listed in stable condition yesterday afternoon, authorities said.

What is the worst pothole you know? Street Beat is launching a contest to find the area’s 10 worst potholes. Tell me about the potholes you love to hate. Be sure to be as precise as possible about the location: Give a street address or the specific place at an intersection or side of the street. I’m not interested in mediocre potholes—the small but annoying ones. No sir, I’m looking for teeth-jarring, car-slamming, realignment-requiring, body-shop benefiting craters.

Three people were taken to hospitals during the weekend after an 11-year-old Augusta County boy lost control of his speeding family car. Just after midnight Saturday, the car driven by the boy skidded across an oncoming lane of traffic on Thoroughfare Road north of Waynesboro and crashed into a concrete culvert, according to Virginia State Police. The northbound car was traveling about 5 miles faster than the speed limit, police said. The boy was wearing a seat belt.

Q:I have been living in Dinwiddie County for 13 years, and I travel Interstate 85 to and from work. On the southbound side around and just past the exit for U.S. 1, the road is terrible. Why has this part of the highway taken so long to fix, and when can I expect it to be fixed? I’m tired of getting jarred for at least a mile, and it doesn’t do my truck any good, either.—D.G.
