Chris Brown received an “extremely favorable” report from probation officials overseeing his felony assault case, a judge said yesterday. Brown appeared in a Los Angeles courtroom to offer a judge his first progress report since being sentenced for beating ex-girlfriend Rihanna this year. He talked and laughed with his lawyer before the hearing, which took less than 10 minutes.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon,“ also known as “Twilight: The Squeakquel,“ is actually pretty good—a tick better than the first “Twilight,“ which wasn’t bad either. The first “Twilight,“ a lower-budget and scruffier affair directed by Catherine Hardwicke, may have been lame in the visual magic department, but its stars and their smoldering separate-beds bedroom eyes did a valiantly angst-y job in launching a major franchise. The second film in the series is bigger, better in the effects and more vibrant visually, which is crucial—the heroine, Bella, is an Olympic-level mope, and if “New Moon” matched this character’s mood with the visual palette of the first film, we’d all be dead.

The redemption-minded sports flick “The Blind Side” serves its inspiration straight-up with no twist. Writer-director John Lee Hancock wisely lets the true story of Michael Oher—the teen who found a home and, eventually, football stardom, after being adopted by a wealthy Memphis family—speak for itself. That direct focus delivers a feel-good crowd-pleaser, but it also drains the film of the kind of subtle nuances that might have separated it from other Hallmark-like efforts.

German prosecutors say the 26-year-old man who tried to extort $100,000 from former supermodel Cindy Crawford has turned himself in to police. Prosecutors in Stuttgart said yesterday that Edis Kayalar has been charged with one count of extortion in the U.S. If convicted, he could face up to two years in prison. Kayalar allegedly threatened to release a photo of Crawford’s daughter bound to a chair and gagged when she was 7. According to court papers, the girl says a former nanny took the picture as part of a “cops and robbers” game.

The order issued today requires Chidi Benjamin Uzomah Jr. to stay 100 yards away from the radio and television personality. AUBURN HILLS, Mich.—Want to get away, Boss? Bruce Springsteen bellowed “Hello, Ohio!“ to his fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills. That’s in Michigan. The 60-year-old rock legend referred to the neighboring state several times Friday night until E Street Band guitarist Steve Van Zandt whispered in his ear. A visibly embarrassed Springsteen grinned and said such a mistake was “every front man’s nightmare.“

Creating visual images in one’s head can be a useful way of listening to symphonic music. But it would be best to halt the imagination somewhere around the middle of “Nanking! Nanking! A Threnody for Orchestra and Pipa.“ If this music were a movie, it would be one you watch only once, in horror. Composer Bright Sheng wrote the work in memory of the victims of the 1937 massacre of civilians in Nanking, China, by Japanese soldiers. A threnody is an elegy or song for the dead.

When you envision artistic materials featured in a high-end craft and design show, tractor-tire inner tubes might not immediately come to mind. But with the global emphasis on recycling and the creative talents of Richmonders Ken Kobrick and Angela Greene, the rubber has met the road. Kobrick, an ex-welder, and Greene, an inventor, convert discarded inner tubes into “green” luxury accessories, most notably purses that have captivated Hollywood celebrities such as AnnaLynne McCord (“90210” and “Nip/Tuck”) and Alicia Coppola (“Jericho” and “CSI”). FICTION You’d think that given our current state of vampire frenzy—the “Twilight” novels and HBO’s “True Blood” for starters—that a new novel by Anne Rice, who reshaped our notions of vampire literature, would be more in demand than ever. Yet ever since 2003’s “Blood Canticle,“ which brought to a close her “Vampire Chronicles” series, Rice has ventured down more directly religious pathways, shrugging aside the satanic for the saintly. Recently, she has written two books in a series on the early years of Jesus Christ and a memoir about her return to Catholicism. Now, she has written “Angel Time”—the first in what looks to be another series of novels, this one replacing the exciting adventures of vampires with the—honestly, quite dull—lives of angels.

Although Jackson died in June and had a large public tribute at the Staples Center in Los Angeles in July, the private family funeral held Sept. 3 appeared to have been arranged with urgency.

Ski poles have none of the subtlety of a conductor’s baton, but for Arthur Fagen, it was the former that led to the latter. Fagen is the final candidate for the position of music director of the Richmond Symphony. When he was in high school, his family went on a ski vacation and happened to stay in the same lodge as Laszlo Halasz, founder and first director of the New York City Opera. The two became acquainted, and Halasz suggested that Fagen expand his musical talents and take conducting lessons with him.

Thirty-three years ago, George M. Taber set the world of wine on fire with a four-paragraph dispatch about a tasting in France that compared the work of French vintners with those of their counterparts in California. The California wines won, and winemaking in the New World has never been the same. Taber wrote a book about the experience, “Judgment of Paris,“ followed by a second book, “To Cork or Not to Cork,“ on the history and controversy of wine corks.
