A few weeks ago, a friend tipped me off to an Asian bakery in Richmond that serves traditional Vietnamese baguette sandwiches, also known as bánh mi (pronounced BUN-mee). These delectable submarine-shaped sandwiches consist of two slices of crusty French-style baguette that are brushed with a swipe of mayonnaise or butter, and can be filled with a variety of grilled meats (usually marinated pork), p»tés, sausages, coldcuts, even tofu or fried eggs. The sandwiches are then topped with sliced, pickled daikon radishes; shredded, pickled carrots; thinly sliced jalapeño; and fresh herbs, such as cilantro.

A classic sign of social rebellion has taken a sharp turn toward social conformity. It’s plain to see, right there on arms, legs and chests. And lower backs, inner thighs and parts best left unimagined, too. That tattoo has gone mainstream. “It’s not just carnies and criminals anymore,“ said high school English teacher Tim Towslee.

One of the latest buzz terms in the fitness industry is muscle confusion. That means you mix up your workouts so you never plateau in strength or cardiovascular endurance. You keep working your muscles in different ways to achieve maximum results. Some people might be able to make that happen on their own by alternating types of exercises. Others may need a little help, maybe a training program to follow.

As the temperatures drop, it’s a cue for some people to head indoors, take cover and sip cocoa. To the more health-conscious crowd, it means heading to the gym. Then there are always those dedicated few you see out running, biking or walking in weather cold enough to make even the proudest Yankee shiver. Along with this near-frostbitten badge of courage comes runny noses, body aches, fevers, sore throats and coughing spells that can mean only one thing—cold and flu season is upon us.

To see Charles Hill Carter Jr. entertaining guests on the lawn at historic stately Shirley Plantation on the James River was to see a Tidewater gentleman extending gracious hospitality at home. However, when there was a lull in the thousands of tourists who thronged through one of Virginia’s oldest plantations, the plain-spoken man of Charles City County with one foot in the 18th century and another in the 21st reverted to a hard-working farmer. He was not averse to cutting the grass in the searing sun or dirtying his hands caring for crops, cattle and sheep.

Eight years ago, I experienced my first retail Black Friday. I had been working at jcpenney.com for almost a year, and we were feverishly gearing up for the busiest season of the year. Little did I know what that meant. But the next few weeks pulled me into a world of craziness that I now look forward to every year. There are a number of explanations for the origin of the term Black Friday. Some people link it to the cut-throat approach consumers take to stake out and claim their bounties. Others note that most retailers do the bulk of their business near year’s end, when shoppers push retailers “into the black” - an accounting term signifying profitability. Whatever the origin, it’s the best time of year for bargain hunters to save.

Q:Do you know about the “wet pajama” treatment for childhood eczema? Wet a pair of cotton pajamas and wring them out. Put them on the child, then layer a pair of dry fleece pajamas over the top. Leave both on overnight. Body heat creates a layer of high humidity that hydrates the skin. As a physician, I treat older patients, but this approach cleared our son’s severe eczema in three days.

The GBU-57 bomb and the fleet of B-2s—stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base with occasional deployments to Guam and an outpost in the Indian Ocean—are widely seen as the likeliest U.S. military option for setting back Tehran’s hopes for building nuclear weapons.

They lay on scaffoldlike structures, six bodies high and three deep, while Cook County tries to find family, an open estate or any means to bury them privately. Those who remain unclaimed, unknown or simply forgotten are placed in a plywood box, which serves as a makeshift coffin. The boxes are loaded into a rented truck and hauled to Homewood Memorial Gardens in the south suburbs. Q:I have huge amounts of nut grass especially in the summer. Most of it has gone away now, but it will be back when it gets hot next year. Is there a pre-emergent for this? How do you kill it without hurting fescue? Answer: There is not an effective pre-emergent for nut grass. However, there are two post-emergent materials used by commercial turf managers called halosulfuron and bentazon. One is sold as SedgeHammer and the other as Basagran. Both of these can be used right over the top of fescue to kill yellow nut grass. Though neither will hurt your fescue, it’s best to treat early in the summer when you first notice the nut grass.

What is that bird you’ve just spotted? Whether you’re in your or away from home, there are times when unfamiliar species challenge your ability to identify them. Birds that have unusual or even similar markings are often difficult to sort out. Birds that pass through our backyards and neighborhood parks as they follow the Atlantic Flyway during spring and fall migrations can be particularly vexing. Spring birds often feed near the crowns of trees amid dense foliage. Even though they’re apt to sing and have bright plumage, it’s not easy to find them. During fall migration, birds often have confusing colors or markings, are silent, and pass through unnoticed by birders.

Candles. It’s that simple. They are the answer to any decorating dilemma or bare space in need of embellishment, whether it’s a dining table, a sideboard, shelf or mantel. Grab some pillar, tapers or votives in fall colors and try these quick tricks to warm your home’s Thanksgiving mood: Place a round pillar candle in a clear glass container. Fill the container with popcorn kernels, birdseed, dried split peas, mixed nuts in shells or other fall-look filler about halfway up the candle.

Not to be unpatriotic, but another “cranberry” outshines our traditional Thanksgiving cranberry. This fruit, sometimes called mountain cranberry, partridgeberry or foxberry, is esteemed in other parts of the world. You may know it by its Scandinavian name, lingonberry, because that’s where it’s most popular, with many thousands of tons harvested each year from the wild.

Serving a healthy Thanksgiving dinner doesn’t have to mean giving up that pumpkin pie or those buttery sweet potatoes. But it does involve making some trade-offs. The trick is knowing when the indulgence is worth it. Of course, this is somewhat subjective. For some of us, it isn’t Thanksgiving without a slice of pumpkin pie, while others will claim it’s the mashed potatoes that make the meal.

Central Virginia’s Legal Information Network for Cancer held its fourth annual “It’s in the Bag” benefit auction Nov. 5 at the Westin Richmond hotel. About 250 guests purchased $25 tickets for the privilege of bidding on 150 one-of-a kind purses designed and/or donated by 90 local artists and philanthropists. “This event raises funds to support the many area cancer patients and their families who are helped by LINC’s staff, volunteer attorneys, financial planners and other professionals,“ said Cathy Strauss, LINC’s board president. “These dedicated individuals help solve the non-medical challenges arising from cancer, enabling our clients to focus on their treatment and health. We are very grateful to the artists and purse designers who contributed their work to the auction.“

The top catwalks in New York, London, Paris and Milan, Italy, give head-to-toe style cues for next season. But while shoppers have to wait months for the spring-season futuristic floral prints and lingerie looks that debut during fashion week, the beauty trends can move from runway to real world right away. “It’s like we’re already there,“ says Gordon Espinet, MAC Cosmetics’ vice president of artistry, who noted riskier makeup looks than had been the norm.

With first lady Anne Holton leading the charge, the fate of children in foster care in Virginia has improved dramatically in the past four years. There are fewer kids in the system, and those who are have a better chance of finding a family home. Holton used her political position to make a statement, but state bureaucrats think the new approach will survive a change in administration come January.

One of the first rules most parents learn on the job is that children thrive on routine. Setting a schedule for dinner and bedtime, and establishing family traditions can help kids grow up happy and well adjusted, child-development experts say. Imagine, then, what it must be like for a parent and child who find themselves without a place to call home.

Q:I have been using the same Medicare prescription-drug plan for four years, but my pharmacist told me I needed to switch to a different plan that fits my needs better. What’s the best way to do this? Answer: Because Medicare’s Part D prescription-drug plans can change dramatically from year to year, during the open enrollment period (today until Dec. 31), all seniors with a Part D plan should do some comparison shopping to ensure they’re getting the best drug coverage at the lowest cost. Here’s how to do it.

FORT WORTH, Texas—Children’s eyes misplaced, bodies mismatched, skeletal remains missing—news reports about mistakes in medical examiner offices are rattling a foundation of the criminal-justice system. The Boston medical examiner’s office sent the wrong bodies to funeral homes and had a body cremated before police could determine whether a murder had taken place.

Q:My wife received a rather large cutting from her mother’s rose in the late spring. It had flourished in New Hampshire for nine years. We have nurtured it to vigorous life planted in potting soil in a rather large flower pot through the summer. When should we transplant it to our garden? Answer: You should plant it right away. Roses need a cold dormant period, but their roots also need the insulation of the soil for protection during the winter. If you’re not sure exactly where you want it to go permanently, leave it in the pot and bury the pot in the ground in a sheltered area. This will allow it to go through normal winter dormancy. In late February, remove it from the pot and plant it in a well-drained area that gets full sun.

PROJECT: Kitchen backsplash TIME: One week COST: $1,200 HOW HE DID IT: Jeff Wilson took a week of vacation to install a tile backsplash in the kitchen of his Glen Allen home. “I knew he was up for the challenge because he helped restore our 1972 Corvette Stingray convertible,“ wrote his wife, Alicia Wilson. Hiring a contractor to do a backsplash in the 15-by-24-foot kitchen would have been costly, particularly given the pattern and materials Alicia had in mind. Her vision was to incorporate natural materials in a vertical pattern to offset the length of the kitchen—meaning lots of angled cuts.

Q:My wife and I would like to learn more about an object we found in our attic. It is marked on the bottom. I believe it is sterling and was made before 1800 in London. I also would like to know its value. - J.J. Answer: Your sterling silver bowl was made in London in 1878. To say that it is extravagantly decorated is an understatement. It is typical of many pieces of Victorian silver. Eighteenth-century silver often is sparsely decorated.

There’s no way to ensure mortgage stays with lender Q:I read with interest one of your responses to a reader who asked why mortgage applications take so long.
