But Elie Wakim and Nada Ghamloush from Lebanon, and Dimitri Stafeev and Olga Zaytseva from Israel, had a problem in common: Belonging to different religions, neither couple could get married in their home countries and had to fly to the Mediterranean island of Cyprus to tie the knot.

PROJECT: Bookshelf unit/window seat TIME: Two weeks spread over six months COST: $600-$700 HOW THEY DID IT: Jim Savage saw an idea in a home-improvement magazine for a built-in bookshelf with a window seat. He decided it could be a do-it-yourself project for his Richmond home. Savage built the cabinets out of plywood with poplar face frames and trim. The lower-cabinet doors are poplar. Crown molding trims the top of the two upper units. He was able to reuse baseboard that already was in place.

When the Rev. Claude Charles Vaché became diocesan bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Southern Virginia in 1978, he was seen as “high church” or very traditional in his views, according to clergy colleagues. However, “he prayed a lot over issues, always asking for guidance,“ said his “foster son,“ Valdeir France of Portsmouth. Unequivocally opposed to the ordination of women, he surprised his diocese by changing his mind. “He began to think and talk about it and thought it was the right thing to do,“ France said.

If you skip breakfast because you are trying to save calories or you think you don’t have time, here’s your wake-up call. Breakfast eaters tend to be leaner and more successful at maintaining a healthful weight than people who miss their morning meal. Besides, studies show breakfast skippers make up for the calories by eating more later in the day. Breakfast also provides the energy to jump-start your day and get your brain working.

Over nearly 70 years, the baritone-to-bass radio voice of Harvey Lee Hudson Jr. woke Virginians up. It entertained them in their cars, sold them Cadillacs, talked to them from his home on Christmas morning while they opened gifts and, most recently, reminisced about the way things used to be on a show called “Harvey Hudson’s Passing Parade.“

I’ve been experimenting with homemade blue-cheese dressing for quite some time, and I’ve gotten so spoiled that I cannot bear to drizzle my veggies in anything but the real, homespun stuff. I’ve played around with several recipes - some that are more sour-cream based, some that are primarily mayonnaise and some rooted in buttermilk. I’ve added fresh herbs and I’ve omitted them. I’ve made thick, creamy dressings as well as more liquid-based ones. I’ve mixed by hand and with the food processor. Most importantly, I worked with all types of blue cheese, from the quick and easy pre-crumbled kind to the high-end import cheeses priced by the pound.

If you think you can’t afford to remodel your home and increase its value, think again. Remodeling can be costly, but with materials and labor costs at an all-time low, this could be the least expensive time to update your home. Most Realtors say it’s kitchen and bathroom updates that give you the highest return on investment when it’s time to sell. Because October was National Kitchen and Bath month, salespeople have been focusing recently on the best items for updating these important rooms.

Raised on a tobacco farm near Dungannon that had the first television set in the area, Tazewell County native Frederic David Fraley grew up fascinated by media. He played his guitar with a band on a daily radio show in the 1950s in Norton and was talking to fellow ham radio operators in Morse code by the time he was 15. After retiring from a career in social work in 2005, he started Fraley Family Videography and later produced and was host of a cable TV program called “People Helping People,“ which attracted national attention.

NEW YORK—A teenager trying to get into his apartment after school is confronted by police. A man leaving his workplace chooses a different route back home to avoid officers who roam a particular street. These and hundreds of thousands of other Americans in big cities have been stopped on the street by police using a law-enforcement practice called stop-and-frisk. It alarms civil libertarians but is credited by authorities with helping reduce crime.

The Anzivinos created a backyard water feature out of the pump, the only source of water for Kristi’s father’s family while they were growing up. “It served them well and was removed when public water and sewer were finally installed in the home in the late 1960s,“ Kristi wrote. “We hauled the pump home to Virginia after one of our family reunions, and it took up residence in various garages over the next 40 years.“

Q:I have a large area of English ivy that I have treated with varying success with two herbicides. The waxy coating on ivy leaves seems to reduce the effectiveness of the spraying. Can you suggest a product that will eradicate this plant? Answer: The only success I’ve had is to cut it all off at the ground and when it starts to grow back, spray it with glyphosate. Winter is approaching, and despite predictions that December to March will feature milder weather and lower energy prices, it never hurts to be prepared for the worst. If we don’t cover everything on the to-do list today, we still have a few weeks to cut away the weeds to get to the shrub, so to speak. Consider your furnace. You might want to replace your furnace with a newer model. Every year, according to federal statistics, 2.5 million American homeowners do. Yet of the 43 million residential oil and gas furnaces in operation in U.S. homes, the statistics say, one in four is over 20 years old. Many new furnaces on the market are 25 percent to 40 percent more efficient than older models. The Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star program promotes furnaces using a “condensing technology” as the most efficient. The efficiency rating on the label of every new furnace tells how much of the total energy the furnace uses will be delivered to the home as heat. The higher the rating, the better.

While this is a good thing, the question is always asked, “What do I plant with them?“ One of my favorites to partner with pansies is sweet alyssum. No matter where you live in the country, at some time during the year you can grow pansies and alyssum together for a magnificent olfactory experience.

When I moved to my farm in Bedford, N.Y., almost five years ago, the bird population was not what I had expected. I saw jays, robins, red-tailed hawks, a random woodpecker and lots of crows, but no smaller songbirds—no finches, nuthatches, chickadees or juncos. When I lived in Westport, Conn., I fed the birds every winter, and their numbers and the variety of species grew each year. One spring, we counted more than 100 species.

When hosting trick-or-treaters at your home, keep these safety tips in mind: Burn candles only when an adult is in the room and paying attention. Make sure children cannot touch them. Blow out the candles when adults leave the room or go to sleep. If you have children in your home, store candles, matches and lighters out of their reach in a locked cabinet.

Last month, working mothers took a hit on the chin when the results of a new study on childhood obesity were released by the U.K.-based Institute of Child Health. The study of more than 12,500 5-year-olds found that those with working mothers were less physically active and more likely to eat unhealthy food. Or, as the BBC so provocatively summed it up: “Working mothers’ children unfit.“

Q:I bought a Coca-Cola sign at a flea market about 10 years ago. It appears to be hand-painted with a beach scene. I was told that it dates from the 1950s. There are no signatures or markings. I would like to know more about it.—G.D. Answer: The hand-painted sign was not authorized by the Coca-Cola Co. It is a fantasy piece, not a reproduction, produced sometime within the past 30 years. It probably was never meant to fool anyone. It is a decorative item.

No standard formula for agent commission Q:How do agents get commission on rental property?—Peter Answer: There is no standard formula to compensate a real estate agent for finding a tenant for you. From my experience, most agents will want one month’s rent for their commission. However, this is negotiable. If, for example, you want the agent to manage the property for you (which is usually a good idea so that you won’t be bothered every time the tenant wants a light bulb changed), the agent may take a percentage of the monthly rent—ranging from 6 percent to 10 percent.

The trouble with dinner on Halloween is you need to compete with gobs and gobs of candy. Which means dinner needs to be flavorful enough to appeal to little goblins with Milky Ways on their minds, healthy enough to offset all that sugar, and fast enough so your troop of treaters doesn’t revolt while waiting to get out the door. And that was the inspiration for this simple chicken sauté. Serve it with a quick sauté of baby spinach with garlic and lemon zest.

Santa has always had a monopoly on the good cookies. But why should the winter holidays get all the gingerbread? And why should something as deliciously fun as a cookie exchange be relegated to December? Cookie exchanges are about more than shared calories, says Julia Usher, a former California Bay Area engineer turned bakery diva. “It’s an opportunity to draw family and friends into the kitchen and swap memories and recipes,“ she says. “It’s one thing to take the cookies home. It’s even better when you can take the stories home. A lot of the cookie-swap tradition is about carrying on what’s been important into the future—giving and sharing, handing down the legacy of recipes.“

Growing up in the Texas Hill Country, I was your typical all-American boy, playing sports and dreaming of reaching the Super Bowl, World Series or World Cup some day. The camaraderie of the team, the pride of being an athlete and the cheering fans were intoxicating. Late into high school, I realized I wasn’t actually professional material, and the excitement of game day was gone. Or so I thought. I never imagined the thrill of victory would return years later—and my uniform would be pink.

Dallas B. Pigge of Amelia County never forgot the cold and hunger of his six months as a German prisoner of war during World War II. He also never forgot the elation he felt when an American tank showed up on the banks of the Danube River and liberated Mr. Pigge and his fellow prisoners. “When he got as far as he could without falling into the water,“ Mr. Pigge recounted of the U.S. soldier in the tank, “he raised up out of the turret with a pistol in his hand and he said, ‘Who’s in charge here?‘“ The guys said, ‘That German captain over there.‘ He had a little talk with the German captain. It was a rather short one. And the captain said, ‘OK, all you prisoners can go.‘ That was the moment of freedom!“

Q:The inside of my mouth became very sensitive to salt, acid and anything spicy. When my wife looked, she said it looked like thrush. I went to my dentist to have it checked out. After a visual assessment and asking about medications, one of his first questions was, “Are you using a cinnamon toothpaste?“ Stopping the cinnamon toothpaste and using a prescription medicated mouthwash called “Magic Mouthwash” cured the condition in about 10 days. I hope this will help other readers.

The humble cardigan, a sometimes forgotten wardrobe staple, is enjoying a surge in popularity this season—perfect for economy-rocked consumers. “They’re super cozy and comforting and cover a multitude of body imperfections,“ says Jasmine Chang, executive fashion editor at O, the Oprah magazine. Cardigans were named for the seventh Earl of Cardigan, a British commander who found the Crimean War a tad chilly, poor guy, and required an extra layer under his uniform. Since then, they’ve signaled all things preppy and wholesome (Mr. Rogers) or frumpy (Queen Elizabeth II). And this year, they’ve even gone first-lady chic.

The Little Sisters of the Poor in Richmond are quite serious about their mission of caring for the elderly. Their selfless nature typically keeps them out of public view, but the recent canonization of their order’s founder, Jeanne Jugan, and their own 135th anniversary have them planning a rare celebration or two. They are returning to the Fan tomorrow, Jugan’s 217th birthday, for an open house at the Warsaw Condominiums, their home from 1877 to 1976. They will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving for the canonization of Jugan on Thursday at Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. They also will host a touring stage production about Jugan next month.
