Q:Have you ever heard of ibuprofen helping men with prostate problems? I am a runner and frequently use ibuprofen after a long run. I discovered that on the days that I took ibuprofen, I didn’t have to get up at night to go to the bathroom. When I have beer with the boys in the evening, I take ibuprofen afterward and don’t have to get up to pee. Normally, I would be up and down a couple of times.

Q:I have huge amounts of nut grass especially in the summer. Most of it has gone away now, but it will be back when it gets hot next year. Is there a pre-emergent for this? How do you kill it without hurting fescue? Answer: There is not an effective pre-emergent for nut grass. However, there are two post-emergent materials used by commercial turf managers called halosulfuron and bentazon. One is sold as SedgeHammer and the other as Basagran. Both of these can be used right over the top of fescue to kill yellow nut grass. Though neither will hurt your fescue, it’s best to treat early in the summer when you first notice the nut grass.

Q:I inherited a desk from my stepfather and would like to know more about it. All I know is that it came from England. It has two drawers, twisted legs and probably once had a leather top. I believe it is a lady’s writing desk.—C.C. Answer: Your piece is not a strict reproduction of a 17th-century piece (desks like this did not exist at the time), but it was made in the style of Jacobean furniture. The joinery indicates it was made during the early 20th century.

What is that bird you’ve just spotted? Whether you’re in your or away from home, there are times when unfamiliar species challenge your ability to identify them. Birds that have unusual or even similar markings are often difficult to sort out. Birds that pass through our backyards and neighborhood parks as they follow the Atlantic Flyway during spring and fall migrations can be particularly vexing. Spring birds often feed near the crowns of trees amid dense foliage. Even though they’re apt to sing and have bright plumage, it’s not easy to find them. During fall migration, birds often have confusing colors or markings, are silent, and pass through unnoticed by birders.

Central Virginia’s Legal Information Network for Cancer held its fourth annual “It’s in the Bag” benefit auction Nov. 5 at the Westin Richmond hotel. About 250 guests purchased $25 tickets for the privilege of bidding on 150 one-of-a kind purses designed and/or donated by 90 local artists and philanthropists. “This event raises funds to support the many area cancer patients and their families who are helped by LINC’s staff, volunteer attorneys, financial planners and other professionals,“ said Cathy Strauss, LINC’s board president. “These dedicated individuals help solve the non-medical challenges arising from cancer, enabling our clients to focus on their treatment and health. We are very grateful to the artists and purse designers who contributed their work to the auction.“

With first lady Anne Holton leading the charge, the fate of children in foster care in Virginia has improved dramatically in the past four years. There are fewer kids in the system, and those who are have a better chance of finding a family home. Holton used her political position to make a statement, but state bureaucrats think the new approach will survive a change in administration come January.

Answer: Because Medicare’s Part D prescription-drug plans can change dramatically from year to year, during the open enrollment period (today until Dec. 31), all seniors with a Part D plan should do some comparison shopping to ensure they’re getting the best drug coverage at the lowest cost. The 19-year-old woman in the middle of the second row of the history class looks like any other college student. She is every bit the bookish student, more interested in grades than gossip. But she is also a survivor with horror in her past and an uncertain future. “I was always told I wouldn’t make it past the seventh grade,“ said Lyndsey Benson, a freshman at J. Miserable in menopause, Elizabeth Alsgaard pondered an awful choice: drenching hot flashes or hormone therapies that might raise the risk of cancer. What actress Suzanne Somers raved about held much more appeal—custom-mixed “bioidentical” hormones, just like ones the body makes. “Anything I can put into my body that’s natural has to be better,“ said Alsgaard, 52, a California audiologist who admitted having “no knowledge base to go on other than fear” when she took Somers’ advice.

Q:My wife received a rather large cutting from her mother’s rose in the late spring. It had flourished in New Hampshire for nine years. We have nurtured it to vigorous life planted in potting soil in a rather large flower pot through the summer. When should we transplant it to our garden? Answer: You should plant it right away. Roses need a cold dormant period, but their roots also need the insulation of the soil for protection during the winter. If you’re not sure exactly where you want it to go permanently, leave it in the pot and bury the pot in the ground in a sheltered area. This will allow it to go through normal winter dormancy. In late February, remove it from the pot and plant it in a well-drained area that gets full sun.

PROJECT: Kitchen backsplash TIME: One week COST: $1,200 HOW HE DID IT: Jeff Wilson took a week of vacation to install a tile backsplash in the kitchen of his Glen Allen home. “I knew he was up for the challenge because he helped restore our 1972 Corvette Stingray convertible,“ wrote his wife, Alicia Wilson. Hiring a contractor to do a backsplash in the 15-by-24-foot kitchen would have been costly, particularly given the pattern and materials Alicia had in mind. Her vision was to incorporate natural materials in a vertical pattern to offset the length of the kitchen—meaning lots of angled cuts.

Q:My wife and I would like to learn more about an object we found in our attic. It is marked on the bottom. I believe it is sterling and was made before 1800 in London. I also would like to know its value. - J.J. Answer: Your sterling silver bowl was made in London in 1878. To say that it is extravagantly decorated is an understatement. It is typical of many pieces of Victorian silver. Eighteenth-century silver often is sparsely decorated.

Continuing our efforts to get homes ready for winter, this week’s tips will focus on rearranging the tons of snow that some weather forecasters predict this year. There’s no way to ensure mortgage stays with lender Q:I read with interest one of your responses to a reader who asked why mortgage applications take so long. You had written that you prefer to have direct con tact with a local lender. I also felt more comfortable dealing with a local lender when I purchased my current house. However, soon after closing, the mortgage was sold. The same thing happened when I refinanced a few years ago. Is there any way to ensure that a mortgage stays with the original lender? - Ed

Use light-colored metal pans: Preferably aluminum, greased to prevent sticking. Dark pans absorb heat, often resulting in burnt loaves. Glass pans are worse. Glass will act as an insulator and often burn the bread. Check your ingredients: If your baking powder and baking soda are outdated, buy fresh. Otherwise you risk wasting more expensive ingredients for the sake of using old leavener, which is relatively inexpensive.

Swine-flu cases appear to be declining in central Virginia, though the supply of H1N1 vaccine still is lagging behind desired levels. School absenteeism is back to normal levels in the counties of Charles City, Goochland, Hanover and New Kent, a public-health spokesman said yesterday. Absenteeism is declining in Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield and Henrico, while hospital emergency rooms report fewer visits by people with flulike illnesses.

Wellness Sometimes we’re so concerned with simply getting through the holidays that we don’t take time to think about the little things that can help us enjoy the season. Sometimes it’s as easy as indulging in Mom’s apple pie without the guilt. Other times, it’s simply achieving the emotional and mental balance that will give you the focus to relish family and friends.

Q:What can you tell me about online dating? My 34-year-old daughter met her husband-to-be on the Internet and has been encouraging me to give it a try. But at age 60, and eight years divorced, I’m a little gun-shy. Answer: If you’re not sure whether to take the plunge, visit a few dating sites and look around. Most services allow you to check out their members at no cost or obligation. Then, if you like what you see, you can sign up (fees range between $20 and $60 per month) and start e-mailing members you’re interested in or they can e-mail you. Most sites also offer instant messaging and chat rooms.

Clichés and rhyming weather lore passed down through the generations supposedly predict weather patterns and seasonal changes. Naturalists and amateur forecasters enjoy correlating these sayings to what they observe in nature to suggest what the future might bring. Though idioms such as “no weather is ill, if the wind be still” have become part of our culture, most of the predictions are unreliable. The few that are valid are those based on underlying scientific cause-and-effect relationships, such as the response of plants, animals and insects to changes in atmospheric and environmental conditions.

Q:I had a good laugh at the idea of putting soap under the sheet. Five weeks later, I am not laughing anymore. I have been on Requip for more than four years to treat restless legs syndrome (RLS). I have been using soap under my sheet for five weeks and have had no problems with my RLS at night. It may start to set in while I’m watching TV, but once I go to bed, it goes away.

I remember hearing that we should save the first 10 percent to 15 percent of our earnings. As a business, Southwest Airlines is known for spending less when times are good, so that there is something to dip into when times get lean. Yet in recent years, before the recession, the savings rate for Americans dropped to record lows.

Army tank commander William Lester “Les” Duty and his men were fending off an enemy assault on T-Bone Hill during the Korean War in 1952 when he was shot in the heart. “They put him in a body bag and sent his mother word that he was dead,“ said his wife of 50 years, Marianne Rogers Beck Duty. “He told me he was going through this tunnel and there was this light, and then he was pulled back and he started to fight to get out of the bag.
