With spring finally here and a rather intense winter behind us, it’s hard not to start craving those first seasonal vegetables. Virginia, in particular, produces a good variety including spring onions, beets, spinach, and one of my personal favorites, asparagus. This mild-flavored, flowering perennial is not only easy to cook but also quite healthy and adds a unique spunk to a variety of dishes.

Janet Cleiland Donnan taught dance steps and manners to several generations of Richmond-area children. She later used her home as a bridge to bring about better race relations in the city. Miss Donnan, a beloved teacher who approached racial healing as a mission, died Friday at age 88. Given the amounts of snow Virginia experienced this winter, it’s likely that more than a few children and parents were thrilled to greet the arrival of spring yesterday. I have to be honest, though: I was among the few who loved the repeat snowfalls and being forced to hunker down at home. It was nice to have a good excuse to do nothing but watch weather reports, catch up on movies and reading, and relax. The cookie baking and snowman making did my soul, and my children’s, some good.

When Emme Corbet, 10, and her sister Carolyn, 12, were in kindergarten and first grade, their family took a trip to Ireland. Their mother, Kathy Corbet, helped each child keep a journal as a way of making the vacation more meaningful. Travel journals have since become a tradition for the Richmond family. They start their journals before they leave home, with research into the history, geography, culture and attractions of the places they’ll visit. While there, the girls write every day and tape in brochures, menus, coins and other memorabilia. They often write in restaurants while waiting for dinner.

For grandparents hosting children on spring break or planning a camp for summer, a few tips from Joan Brackin and Georgia Witkin, senior editor of Grandparents.com and a professor of psychiatry at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York: •Open the camp to the older kids. Brackin welcomes all of her grandkids who are out of diapers. Once they reach 13, they become her “counselors in training” and help care for the younger ones. Brackin says the high schoolers help maintain a well-supervised environment; for safety reasons, other grandparents will want to limit camps to a smaller number of kids.

Every morning, I’d put my 4-pound, 6-ounce son under my pouch-like sweater so that we were skin to skin, chest to chest, my body acting as a natural heat source instead of his incubator—with the added benefits of a human touch, soothing heart beat and familiar smell.

WHAT’S HAPPENING The Central Virginia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation held its 10th annual gala—All You Need Is LOVE—on Feb. 27 at The Jefferson Hotel. A sold-out crowd of more than 400 guests opened their hearts and wallets to help fund a cure for juvenile diabetes. Guests were treated to entertainment by Rosetta Stone and the chapter’s first JDRF IDOL, which included performances of Beatles hits “Here Comes The Sun,“ “With A Little Help From My Friends,“ and, of course, the gala’s theme, “All You Need Is Love,“ performed by local children, teens and adults living with or affected by diabetes.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I suspect that many people call their headaches migraine headaches without any justification. I have what my doctor calls optical migraines. I have the classic semicircle of jagged, strobing lines that begin as a small bit near the center of my vision, and it grows and widens until it surrounds one side of my vision. I wonder whether severe headaches with the jagged lines are truly migraines. Can you spell it out for me?—B.T.

Q:What is the best procedure for getting a deck ready for the summer? Answer: Preparing a wood deck for the summer is an easy task as long as you inspect and maintain it throughout the year. The condition of any outdoor surface depends largely on the kind of weather it has to endure. Heavy rain and snow, an accumulation of wet leaves and strong sunlight take their toll.

Gardening Q&A: When to plant arugula

Q:I have fallen in love with arugula. We grew some in the fall, and it was wonderful. I’d love to grow some this spring, but can I plant it before the last frost? Answer: You sure can. Actually, arugula could have been planted in early March. It loves our typical March and April temperatures. However, once the soil starts getting hot in late May, it will probably bolt to seed, which signals the end of the leafy season.

In late February, the unmistakable signs of spring were everywhere: Maple and pear trees were budding. Daffodils and crocuses pushed through sun-warmed soil. Birds noisily began to search for mates. Yet, only a couple of weeks before, back-to-back snowstorms covered our lawns and gardens, hiding most food sources from winter birds. The thick blanket of snow turned backyard feeders into treasure troves for hungry birds, often bordering on feeding frenzies. It was an excellent chance to watch feeding strategies and tactics.

DEAR B.P.: A bit inward from the pupil of the eye is the eye’s lens. It’s a clear, oval-shaped affair that focuses incoming light on the retina to form a sharp image. A cataract is a smudge on the lens. It’s something that happens to everyone with aging. Diabetes, smoking, excessive alcohol and sunlight also contribute to cataract formation.

Tucking into a heap of bangers and mash (sausages and mashed potatoes) certainly fits the St. Patrick’s Day spirit. It just doesn’t often fit into a healthy diet. Bangers and mash, which is popular throughout England and Ireland, typically is made with a mild pork sausage containing lots of breadcrumbs, a bit of sage and gobs of fat.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I was told by a family member that the total amount of Tylenol taken in a person’s lifetime can be hazardous to one’s health. I believe more people get sick due to smells than sights, and Vicks very effectively blocks the odors. We carry it on our ambulance for crew use, and it really helps keep the crew from getting motion sick (especially during calls with really bad smells).

Q:What will happen to my property and money if I die without a will? Answer: No one ever really dies without a will. That’s because even if you don’t create one yourself, the state you resided in will make one for you. But that also means the state gets to determine who gets your property and money—not you. The state laws that determine how your estate will be distributed if you die without a will are called intestacy laws, and they can vary greatly. The best way to find out how your state works is to go to MyStateWill.com. This is a free, user-friendly site that has an intestacy calculator for every state so you can get an exact breakdown of how your estate would be distributed.

Wear green. This one is a no-brainer. If you don’t own any green clothes, which is hard to believe, go wild and paint a green shamrock on your cheek or put green streaks in your hair. But make sure you don’t use permanent colors. On March 18, you don’t want to be singing “It’s not easy being green.“ Irish blood. Everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, but some famous folks who really did have Celtic blood flowing through their veins were James Cagney, Buffalo Bill Cody, Bing Crosby, John F. Kennedy, Davy Crockett, Gene Kelly, Buster Keaton and Grace Kelly. Lucky shamrock. The shamrock is often confused with the four-leafed clover, but they aren’t the same. The shamrock gets its name from the Irish Gaelic word Seamrog, which refers to the plant’s three leaves. Holiday meals. The traditional St. Patrick’s Day meal is corned beef and cabbage. But that’s not the only traditional holiday meal. Another classic Irish dish is colcannon (a mixture of cabbage and mashed potatoes), which is eaten on Halloween. What is it with all the cabbage? Party on. More than half of Ireland’s 5.4 million residents are under 30. No wonder Ireland’s St. Patrick’s Day festival lasts for six days.

Often, when home cooks hear the words phyllo dough, they shudder at the thought of trying to work with this paper-thin concoction made of flour and water. While it might be a tough ingredient to manipulate, once cooked, the texture and crunch that phyllo (aka filo or fillo) dough offers the palate (especially when it’s stuffed with feta or drizzled in honey) is nothing short of addictive.
