The groundwork for Thomas Dale’s 28-14 road victory over L.C. Bird yesterday in the Central Region, Division 6 semifinal was laid not just in practice, not in hours and hours of film study, and not in some late-night meeting where Vic Williams and his coaching staff conceived the game plan. It was laid one bleak Friday two months ago when the Knights, up 14-0 at halftime, suffered a 21-14 defeat at the hands of the Skyhawks, their neighborhood rival, and made a commitment never to feel the pain again.

If you’ve got to play a defending league champion, this is the way to do it. Chattanooga, which meets the University of Richmond at 5 p.m. at the Robins Center, lost the top four scorers off last season’s Southern Conference title-winning team. Additionally, two starters and two top reserves are out until next month, because of injuries and an academic issue in one case. The Mocs had eight healthy scholarship players as their season began.

Midway through the fourth quarter, Virginia got the ball and quarterback Jameel Sewell (Hermitage) threw a 38-yard strike to Perry Jones. It was the first offensive spark of the half, and it appeared as if the Cavs might mount a comeback. Instead, Sewell was sacked by Rennie Moore, Jones ran for a loss of a yard, and Kavell Conner (Manchester) pummeled Sewell on third down. A personal foul penalty extended the drive, but the damage was done.

Fans and media continue to debate Patriots coach Bill Belichick’s decision to go for it on fourth down, giving Peyton Manning short field position with two minutes to go in the Colts’ 35-34 comeback win over New England last week. Some question why Belichick called for Tom Brady to pass to running back Kevin Faulk instead of the Patriots’ mega-productive receivers. Cut Belichick some slack. After all, Randy Moss was physically spent from running all over the field catching touchdown passes.

At one point in the second half, Virginia Commonwealth forward Larry Sanders started mopping a wet spot on the floor. Which was somewhat symbolic of the Rams’ effort against Oklahoma last night. Feeding off a sellout crowd of 7,257 at the Siegel Center, VCU outplayed, outhustled and outscrapped the 17th-ranked Sooners in an 82-69 victory that had the students storming the floor afterward.

Petersburg quarterback Kevin Greeen followed his touchdown run in overtime by darting in for the two-point conversion, lifting the Crimson Wave to a 22-21 win over the Clover Hill Cavaliers yesterday and into the Central Region, Division 5 title game. In overtime, each team gets four attempts from the 10-yard line to cross the goal line. Clover Hill won the toss and took their first lead of the game on a diving catch by wide receiver Tyler Groves in the back of the end zone. Kicker James Swoap added the extra point to put the Cavaliers up 21-14.

Using the most basic fact, the argument could be made that Washington is playing better than any other team in the NFC East right now. Yes, those 3-6 Redskins without Clinton Portis. Better even than division-leading Dallas, which they play today in the 99th game of their bitter rivalry. Simply put, the last-place Redskins are the only NFC East team that won its last game. Could it be the sign of a turnaround toward a late-season surge?

New York passed on signing Iverson (Hampton) in the summer when he was a free agent but revisited their decision after its bad start and the poor play of point guard Chris Duhon.

Jeff Capel and Oklahoma make a much-anticipated visit to the sold-out Siegel Center tonight. While much of the focus has been on the return of Virginia Commonwealth’s former coach and the opportunity to get a signature win over the 17th-ranked team in the country, the Rams (1-1) may be better served by focusing upon themselves. Some problems emerged in an eyebrow-raising 83-67 loss at Western Michigan Wednesday, a loss that was almost as disturbing for ‘how much’ as for ‘how’. This was a team the Rams whipped by 17 points last year.

BLACKSBURG Tears welled in David Wilson’s eyes as he talked about his frustrating freshman season at Virginia Tech. He suppressed his emotions for much of the fall, never releasing them like this. He put on a happy face in the locker room, not wanting to dampen the mood. But Wilson is 18 years old, and being a great football player matters tremendously to him. So not playing a lot hurts. A high school All-America tailback, he came to Tech hoping to contribute this fall. And he has. Just not that much. Through 10 games, he has 39 carries for 227 yards and two touchdowns and has returned 14 kickoffs for 259 yards.

As outside observers start to write the final words on the Al Groh era at Virginia, the coach is working to keep things the same with his team. When asked how he planned to prepare for today’s game against Clemson, he borrowed some advice from golf. “Pick out your target, block out all distractions, and take dead aim,“ he said. “That’s how we compete from week to week.

WASHINGTON - The Nationals say No. 1 draft pick Stephen Strasburg has a dislocation in his left knee joint and should be fine for spring training. Strasburg was examined by Dr. Lewis Yocum in Los Angeles. The Nationals say Strasburg will not require surgery, and that treatment will include rest and physical therapy. The San Diego State right-hander twisted his knee during a workout Thursday and has been scratched from his start in the Arizona Fall League championship game.

HOMESTEAD, Fla.—NASCAR chairman Brian France wants Jimmie Johnson to be commended for his four-year run atop NASCAR and not used as an example of why the championship format might be flawed. Johnson heads into tomorrow’s finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway poised to become the first driver in NASCAR history to win four consecutive titles, all under the Chase for the Sprint Cup championship format implemented in 2004. His dominance has made it easy for Chase critics to blast the system, which France called unfair.

WILLIAMSBURG For two stretches, University of Richmond defenders lost William and Mary shooters. As a result, the Spiders lost the game. The Tribe pulled a 78-71 upset before 2,104 at William and Mary Hall last night. The Tribe made 10 3-pointers, not an extraordinary number. But three in a row came in the last 1:18 of the first half, and that flurry allowed W&M to take a one-point lead and momentum at intermission. The sequence repeated in the second half. W&M’s David Schneider (25 points) hit two 3-pointers and a shorter jumper in less than 60 seconds, moving the Tribe (1-2) to a six-point lead with 10 minutes left in its home opener.
