FORT WORTH, Texas Carl Edwards has found a way to try to mask the frustration of his winless NASCAR Sprint Cup season. “I’ve kind of tried to think of it differently,“ Edwards said. “It’s not that we haven’t had no wins this season, it’s just that we’ve had nine wins over the last two. Deep Run junior Erica Dobbs had a fairly simple, straightforward strategy for the Central Region girls cross country meet: find Midlothian’s Kathleen Lautzenheiser and follow in her footsteps for as long as possible, then win a sprint to the finish line. Executing her plan to topple the two-time defending regional champion was considerably more difficult. But as she rounded the final turn running stride for stride with Lautzenheiser, Dobbs unleashed the finishing kick that earned her all-state honors in the 1,600 meters and pulled away to win her first region title by 5 seconds yesterday at Pole Green Park.

ATLANTA - The Atlanta Falcons are eager to break free of their mostly inglorious past, show they can be a team that consistently puts up winning records and contends for the playoffs. Time to end that losing streak. For the first time in Mike Smith’s two years as coach, the Falcons have lost consecutive games. Certainly, there’s no need for panic - Atlanta lost a pair of road games to Dallas (5-2) and unbeaten New Orleans - but this franchise’s mostly grim 43-year history raises doubts any time there’s the least bit of adversity.

Perhaps the most surprising aspect of that exchange was that Conrath spent time on the sideline. Once again, a defense with little depth was asked to take the field far longer than half the game, the result of an offense that has bigger problems than just who is lining up behind center. The unit also had to deal with short fields caused by misfiring punters.

PHILADELPHIA—They have played each other with both a Super Bowl and a playoff spot at stake. There was the “Bounty Bowl,“ Emmitt Smith getting stuffed, Eagles fans cheering for a motionless Michael Irvin, and Terrell Owens stoking controversy for each side. Dallas and Philadelphia have lined up against each other 99 times in games that have forged one of the NFL’s most heated rivalries. Somehow it seems fitting the 100th meeting would have something significant on the line.

WILLIAMSBURG - Strong safety David Caldwell was a starter on the 2007 defense that surrendered a school-record 427 points at William and Mary. So you’d better believe the senior is eager to be part of the defense that has a chance to give up the fewest. The Tribe warmed up for its two-game closing that will determine its place in the Colonial Athletic Association and the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs with a 31-0 shutout of visiting Towson yesterday.

QUICK KICKS Score: No.16 Miami 52, Virginia 17 For starters: The first half swung on two blocked punts by Virginia, and then several bad punts by the Cavs. When the dust settled, the Hurricanes took a seven-point lead into the second half. Turning point: Virginia might have had the ball with an opportunity to tie the game, but Jacory Harris slipped free on a third-and-6 play in his own territory, and threw a strike downfield that extended the drive, the first of several long-yardage scoring drives for Miami. Star of the game: Miami’s Thearon Collier made sure he’d be on every edition of SportsCenter today with a spectacular 60-yard punt runback - aided by poor tackling. Big picture: With six losses, Virginia must win its final three games to reach a bowl. Their next loss also might signal that a coaching change is imminent at year’s end. Go figure: 26.6 - Net yards per punt. Virginia struggled to get much yardage out of the punting game on its nine attempts. Next: Virginia plays host to Boston College next Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be an online-only broadcast on ESPN360.

Grading the keys

Grading the three keys DRattle Jacory Harris. Miami’s quarterback was sacked twice, but on the whole, his offensive line gave him all the time he needed. He finished with 18 completions for 232 yards with two touchdowns - not spectacular numbers, but enough to compliment the 303 yards of rushing the team’s backs had. Cam Johnson was the most effective pass rusher for Virginia, but he wasn’t able to get inside the head of Harris, outside of offsetting personal foul calls when the two tangled. FFinish strong. The fourth quarter was once again a dead zone for Virginia, though this time, the Hoos faded in the third as well. Coach Al Groh specifically emphasized keeping the offense on the field and the defense off, but it made little difference as Miami won the time of possession battle by 12 minutes. It’s unfortunate for a defense that, on the whole, has played well but has little depth and can’t hang on late in games when the unit is overused. D-Find the hot hand. Virginia enjoyed a solid game out of running back Rashawn Jackson, who carried eight times for 77 yards. Less impressive was Mikell Simpson’s 7 carries for 14 yards. It’s hard to tell exactly when to start going exclusively with one of the two backs, but it was clear that Simpson got too many second-half carries. Freshman Torrey Mack got a handful of carries, but is hampered by the fact that he seems to take the field only when he’s going to get the touch - a dead giveaway to the defense.

NEW KENT—Nicota made up a 10-length deficit at the midway point and stormed home to win the fastest of eight Virginia-bred title races on yesterday’s $334,000 “Day of Champions,“ which concluded the track’s fall harness season. In last week’s prep race, Nicota lost by a neck to Rick’s Crossroads, the heavy favorite in yesterday’s $43,800 event for 3-year-old colts and geldings. Nicota seemed buried entering the home straightaway. But it was there that reinswoman Devan Miller began her late surge.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—Julio Jones left defenders grasping at his heels and Alabama’s defense was typically immovable. Wilson was 25-for-38 for 343 yards and the Wolfpack (1-4, 4-5) made just enough plays to secure their second win against a Bowl Subdivision opponent. Virginia’s football practices this week were conducted in sweats, not because the temperature was low in Charlottesville, but rather to try to imitate the heat the Wahoos will face today in Miami. “It’s hard to simulate, but we’re trying to get as close to it as we can here,“ receiver Vic Hall said. For championship contenders, goals set in summer sun come into focus when the leaves fall. The University of Richmond and Villanova meet today in a Colonial Athletic Association game that will have a major bearing on the league title and, probably, location of postseason games for both teams. “It’s the pink elephant that’s in the room. You’ve got to acknowledge it,“ UR coach Mike London said of the game’s implications.

CHICAGO—The Chicago White Sox acquired Mark Teahen from the Kansas City Royals for Chris Getz and Josh Fields. The trade was announced shortly after the White Sox said they had declined a 2010 option on right fielder Jermaine Dye, 35, who batted .250 with 27 home runs and 81 RBI in 141 games. Teahen batted .271 with a career-high 34 doubles, 12 home runs and 50 RBI in 144 games in 2009, battling a sore back in the final month of the season. He made 99 starts at third base, 31 in right field and three at second base.

FORT WORTH, Texas - Kyle Busch started his Texas tripleheader with another NASCAR Trucks Series victory. Busch has won each of his past five truck races, extending a streak that began at Bristol in August. Last night, he beat Matt Crafton by 0.725 seconds at the 1½-mile, high-banked Texas track. “That’s cool, man. That’s a pretty proud accomplishment,“ Busch said. “I’ve wanted to win a truck race here for a long time.“

TUSCALOOSA, Ala.—When they last met, Alabama vs. LSU was all about the Tide’s Nick Saban coaching against a former team. Two top 10 Southeastern Conference teams meet today, with a pair of formidable defenses and one Heisman Trophy candidate in a game that might be low on points, if not drama.

Jackson, who missed the second half of the 2008 season after injuring his right knee during practice, suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury to his left knee during a non-contact drill Wednesday. Ever since the discovery of the wildcat offense, it’s been difficult to take Miami’s Ronnie Brown out of any fantasy lineup. This may be the week where you want to show him the bench, though. Brown is coming off a 27-yard game - which ties his worst output in 21 games since the unveiling of the high school-style scheme - and returns to the stadium where it all began. Tomorrow, he’ll face the Patriots, who surely are still bitter over his 113 yards and four TDs against them in the wildcat’s debut last year.

2 Finish strong . The fourth quarter is the only time this year where U.Va. is being outscored—by a 69-41 margin. The Cavs have to find a way to preserve leads in the game’s final 15 minutes, which is going to involve keeping the offense on the field more in the first 45 minutes. If the defense is consistently asked to play more, lack of depth on the unit will mean fatigue late in games.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Life got sweeter for Life Is Sweet without her daunting stablemate Zenyatta in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic. After fruitlessly chasing the undefeated mare in three previous races, Life Is Sweet found the winner’s circle. Garrett Gomez guided her from last - more than 17 lengths behind - to a 2½-length win in yesterday’s $2 million race at Santa Anita. Life Is Sweet was one of four long shots to win on the first day of the 26th annual world championships.
