NHL ROUNDUP THRASHERS 3, FLYERS 1: Ondrej Pavelec made 44 saves, Ron Hainsey, Todd White and Rich Peverley scored, and Atlanta won at Philadelphia last night to move to a point of eighth-place Boston in the Eastern Conference. The Thrashers have won four straight since a six-game losing streak. WILD 4, FLAMES 3: Chuck Kobasew scored twice to help Minnesota edge Calgary for its third straight home victory. Kobasew, who has four goals in his past four games, scored twice in the second period to help the Wild boost its slim playoff hopes. BRUINS 2, RANGERS 1: Miroslav Satan and Dennis Wideman scored for Boston, and Tuuka Rask kept visiting New York scoreless until late in the third period. The Bruins have 76 points to hold the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. PREDATORS 3, BLUES 2: Dustin Boyd scored his second goal of the game 48 seconds after teammate Patric Hornqvist tied St. Louis, which fell to an NHL-worst 12-18-5 at home with a setback that could be devastating to faint playoff hopes. SABRES 5, HURRICANES 3: Jochen Hecht scored two goals, and Ryan Miller made 27 saves in Buffalo’s win. Sergei Samsonov, Brandon Sutter and Eric Staal scored for Carolina. The Sabres won their third straight to finish 3-1-1 on a five-game road trip.

NBA ROUNDUP CAVALIERS 104, PISTONS 79: J.J. Hickson and Anthony Parker combined for 20 points in the decisive third quarter and Cleveland beat Detroit to give the Cavaliers their first season sweep of the Pistons in 30 years. Cleveland held a double-digit lead most of the game, although the Pistons cut it to 55-47 on a basket by Jonas Jerebko with 10 minutes left in the third quarter. Hickson and Parker took charge, combining to score 16 of Cleveland’s next 19 points while Detroit went more than five minutes without a field goal. KINGS 102, CLIPPERS 89: Carl Landry scored 24 points and Beno Udrih had 20 points and a career-high 17 assists, leading short-handed Sacramento. Tyreke Evans, the Kings’ missed his sixth game of the season because of a mild concussion, a bruised jaw, lacerated gums and chipped teeth. The injuries were the result of an inadvertent elbow he took on Friday night from Milwaukee’s Ersan Ilyasova while they were going for a loose ball. PACERS 121, THUNDER 101: Danny Granger scored 32 points to help Indiana beat Oklahoma City. Troy Murphy had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Roy Hibbert had 20 points and eight rebounds for the Pacers, who have won three of four.

BLACKSBURG Malcolm Delaney’s transition to becoming a true point guard began almost three years ago with another player’s decision to transfer, got serious after a conversation with Virginia Tech coach Seth Greenberg and took its most productive turn last summer, when Delaney learned from a former NBA star and played with a current one. And so it was that on the eve of this season, Delaney said, “I’m a full point guard. I don’t really classify myself as a combo anymore. SPOKANE, Wash.—The celebration was barely over, and already Michigan State had to start thinking about life in the NCAA tournament without injured Kalin Lucas. Korie Lucious, filling in for the Spartans’ star guard, hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cap a frenetic finish and give depleted Michigan State an 85-83 victory over Maryland yesterday in the second round of the Midwest Region.

Imagine a cyclone that didn’t consist of turbulent air and moisture but rather of barbed wire, razor blades and rusty nails. That is how Temple’s defense must have appeared to the James Madison women’s basketball team. The eighth-seeded Owls, long, lean and aggressive, swept the ninth-seeded Dukes out of the NCAA tournament yesterday with a 65-53 victory that was built primarily on a foundation of splendid man-to-man defense. Temple (25-8) permitted JMU to shoot only 35.6 percent—and only 22.6 percent in the first half—while holding the Dukes 18 points beneath their average for the season.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Dayton Flyers aren’t ready for their first NCAA tournament appearance to end just yet. Brittany Wilson scored just before the buzzer, and Dayton rallied from an 18-point deficit to beat TCU 67-66 yesterday in the opening round of the Memphis Region in the NCAA women’s tournament. “With it being our first time in the NCAA tournament, we had nothing to lose, so we tried to give it all that we could,“ Wilson said.

“Merlin was 6-5 and a shade under 300 pounds,“ noted ex-Packers guard Jerry Kramer, a fellow Hall of Famer and longtime nemesis. “He was a Phi Beta Kappa, had a master’s degree in economics. He had a great heart, he never quit, he never slowed down, he never gave you an inch. “And those were his weak points.“ Newlife, a Brit who died at 69 last year, bequeathed a bunch of longterm betting slips placed between 2000 and 2005 to the charity Oxfam. And one of them - that Roger Federer, at 66-1 odds, would win 14 Grand Slam tennis titles before 2020 - has already come in, to the tune of $25,000. And there’s a few more still pending for the next 10 years.

PITTSBURGH - Jamie McBain scored his first NHL goal on a slap shot from above the circles with less than a second remaining in overtime, and the Carolina Hurricanes rallied to beat the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-2 yesterday. Seconds after Penguins goalie Marc-Andre Fleury made what looked to be a potential game-saving stop on Chad LaRose’s wrist shot, McBain - getting two points in his third career game - beat Fleury cleanly with nine-tenths of a second remaining. Virginia Tech’s best basketball player expects his coach to remain at the school despite St. John’s perhaps being interested in hiring him. Junior point guard Malcolm Delaney said yesterday that coach Seth Greenberg has told his players and Delaney’s father, Vincent, that he will be at Tech next season. “So if a coach tells a player that he’s going to be there and tells your parents that he’s going to be there, and he doesn’t [return], then I have some different things to say about it,“ Delaney said. “I’m pretty sure he’ll be back here. He told my father two days ago. He’s been telling people basically the whole week.“

LOUISVILLE, Ky.—Liberty outrebounded Kentucky 38-26, outscored them 54-30 in the paint and had 19 second-chance points. They just couldn’t match Kentucky’s ability to get to the free throw line. And that proved costly as the fourth-seeded Wildcats down the 13th-seeded Flames 83-77 yesterday in the opening round of the NCAA tournament at Freedom Hall.

Could Stephen Strasburg pitch at The Diamond this season? Maybe. Strasburg will begin the season with the Class AA Harrisburg (Pa.) Senators of the Eastern League. Richmond’s first-year franchise, the Flying Squirrels, also is a member of the EL. Harrisburg makes just one trip to Richmond this season for three games beginning June 1. A hot start to his professional career by Strasburg may get him to the major leagues before then. Anything else, or a show of restraint by Nationals management, could give Richmonders an up-close look at one of the most heralded pitching prospects in baseball history.
