WILLIAMSBURG For two stretches, University of Richmond defenders lost William and Mary shooters. As a result, the Spiders lost the game. The Tribe pulled a 78-71 upset before 2,104 at William and Mary Hall last night. The Tribe made 10 3-pointers, not an extraordinary number. But three in a row came in the last 1:18 of the first half, and that flurry allowed W&M to take a one-point lead and momentum at intermission. The sequence repeated in the second half. W&M’s David Schneider (25 points) hit two 3-pointers and a shorter jumper in less than 60 seconds, moving the Tribe (1-2) to a six-point lead with 10 minutes left in its home opener.

Castaway Sporting Goods (804 706-9100) reports Frank Gibson caught a 34-pound bluecat from the bank at Dutch Gap. Last week was messy because of the storms, high water and abnormal tides. Most anglers went to ponds and lakes. Things are expected to turn around this week should the weather stay favorable. Dr. Julie Ball reports the northerly direction of the wind will continue to push the inshore water temperature down, encouraging larger rockfish to head our way. School-sized fish are keeping local anglers busy. Schoolies are available in lower bay waters, with the outgoing tide providing the best luck. Casters working the pilings of lower bay structures and the 3rd and 4th island tubes at the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel are hooking dozens of fish to 28 inches on Wind Cheaters and Storm Lures.

The first-string defense for the Powhatan football team hasn’t spent much time on the field this season, especially in the second half of games. The Indians’ defense has four shutouts to its credit and has allowed just 47 points the entire year. The rub is that only one opponent finished with a winning record. The combined records of the 10 opponents is 33-64.

What he did: In last week’s 17-16 victory over Varina, he had quite a night. The 6-foot, 184-pound wide receiver caught three passes for 72 yards, including a 39-yard reception that set up a Highland Springs field goal, picked the ball out of the air after a blocked field goal attempt and returned it 70 yards for a TD at the end of the first half, and - if that weren’t enough - was one of two Springers with an interception. Age: 18 Other sports: Track Favorite thing besides sports: “I like to listen to music and draw [pen and pencil].“ Three words his friends would use to describe him: “Funny, outgoing, sociable.“ Strengths: “Positive attitude; promoting togetherness; I can catch [the ball] and make a play.“ Working to improve: “Running my routes, getting better at catching the ball. You always work on that.“ Biggest challenge: “Balancing school work and practice.“ Best sports memory: “Beating Varina. It was my last home game, and to end it on a note like that.“ Sports person he admires most: “Jerry Rice [for his receiving].“ Favorite food: Fried chicken Pet peeve: “Ignorant people.“ Possession he can’t do without: “My cellphone.“ If he had one wish: “That my mom could have her own art studio.“ One thing about you most people don’t know: “That I’m shy until people get to know me.“ - Arthur Utley

The Cosby boys volleyball team’s Achilles’ heel this season has been an inability to handle adversity in some big matches. Get down, they’re out. Great Bridge of Chesapeake had the Titans backpedaling last night in the semifinals of the Virginia High School League Group AAA tournament at the Siegel Center. Cosby won the first two games, but the unbeaten Wildcats won the third and fourth sets and served for the match in Game 5.

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Jamie McMurray yesterday was hired to drive the No. 1 Chevrolet for Earnhardt Ganassi Racing. The hiring has long been in the works. It gave one of the last remaining open seats for 2010 to McMurray. It also reunited McMurray with car owner Chip Ganassi, who gave the driver his first Cup ride in 2002. McMurray drove 114 races for Ganassi, but left after the 2005 season to join Roush Fenway Racing. He is losing that ride because Roush must drop one team to meet NASCAR’s four-car limit that begins next season.

MIAMI (4-5) AT CAROLINA (4-5) Time: 8:20 p.m. Line: Panthers by 3 On the air: TV—NFL Network; radio—WRNL (910), 8 p.m. Inside slant: Each club depends on its running game, but Dolphins RB Ronnie Brown (foot) is out for the season, and Carolina’s 1-2 punch of DeAngelo Williams (knee) and Jonathan Stewart (Achilles tendon) is questionable with lingering injuries. . . . Ricky Williams is expected to get the bulk of the carries for Miami and take some snaps in wildcat. . . . The biggest concern for Carolina is defensive end Charles Johnson, who is doubtful after missing his second straight practice with a strained pectoral muscle. . . . Miami tight end Anthony Fasano was ruled out because of a hip injury. . . . Game marks the return of Dolphins offensive coordinator Dan Henning to Carolina, where he was fired after 2006 season. Henning first used the wildcat with the Panthers late in 2006 season, when Williams rushed for seven first downs in eight tries in win over Atlanta. Wrath of Woody: For years, people have been saying Williams is “one wild cat.“ Now he gets a chance to prove it in the wildcat formation. Miami 23, Carolina 20.

BLACKSBURG Her chest heaved and her feet burned as she ran across the lumpy field. None of it felt perfect to Marika Gray. But on this July day in Alexandria, perfect didn’t matter, because Gray was playing soccer again, nine months after a left knee injury shortened her sophomore season at Virginia Tech. She had established herself as a legitimate ACC player, before her knee made her start over, back on the lumpy field at home, playing against 14-year-olds from her club’s younger team. The time away from soccer deteriorated her touch and fitness worse than she had imagined. A ball rolled her way and bounced off her shin. She could barely sprint without sucking wind.
