From the Chesapeake Bay on the Eastern Shore to Rhododendron Gap in the far western part of the state, photographers in the Scenic Virginia 2009 Viewshed Photo Competition captured the diversity and breathtaking vistas of Virginia’s landscape. “For the second year in a row, we were thrilled that photographers captured the depth and breadth of beauty that exists in our commonwealth,“ said Scenic Virginia Executive Director Leighton Powell. “Imbued with deep, gorgeous colors, this year’s winning photos are spectacular—I’d even say dramatic. Even if you don’t believe in ghosts, walking through a graveyard can be a little spooky - especially in autumn as the trees lose their leaves, flowers wither away and light fades in the late afternoon. But cemeteries can make fascinating destinations. Sometimes a few words on a tombstone can suggest a whole life story; sometimes you can find a famous name, a beautiful work of art, or landscaping worthy of a botanical garden.

Bruce A. Yoder of Richmond was in California with his wife when he traveled to the Darioush Winery. “My wife, Deborah Love, serves on a national advisory board . . . that meets in Napa Valley, Calif., every August. I have the day to travel and take photos. This stately structure with its magnificent pillars and calming fountains was irresistible,“ Yoder said. The Darioush Winery in Napa Valley is modeled after the ancient city of Persepolis in Iran. Darioush is a temple to wine, hospitality and founder Darioush Khaledi’s Persian roots, Yoder said.

Local legend has it that cowboys, sheep herders and trappers long knew about the huge fossilized bones that regularly surfaced from the ancient rock underlying Utah’s dinosaur country. But not until steel magnate Andrew Carnegie learned of the bones did Vernal and the surrounding Ashley Valley get the nation’s attention 100 years ago. Now Vernal, a Western outpost whose wide streets are lined with energy, mining and agricultural businesses, makes a business of its bones. It’s home to a large dinosaur museum and is the base for a National Park Service site at a bone quarry Carnegie established in 1909.

GEAR & GADGETS Elmo’s Tickle Hands are a pair of big red fluffy four-fingered gloves that provide an extra pair of hands (sort of) to help little ones entertain themselves wherever they roam. One of the two gloves bears an Elmo face; pushing the nose activates a battery-powered mechanism that sets the glove vibrating and giggling as Elmo leads kids in the Tickle Hand Groove dance, then instructs them to “tickle someone.“ Included DVD teaches the dance, step by step. The Tickle Hands make for a fun group activity, though probably not on a public conveyance or anywhere quiet is appreciated. Recommended for children ages 18 months to 4 years.—Judi Dash

The kids are back in school, and travel is likely the last thing on your mind. But it’s never too early to start scouting the best of those holiday airfare deals—which are now becoming more widespread and plentiful. Post-Labor Day sales are popping up among many major carriers, and at least one fare watcher thinks early might be the best time to buy. Before the fall, procrastination seemed to pay off: People were buying tickets later, and airlines were jumping to get fare sales in for last-minute deals. But as the economy improves and airlines can better predict passenger numbers, cheap near-term fares are going to be harder to come by, Travelzoo Senior Editor Gabe Saglie said.

You’re tired, hungry, have a cranky baby on your lap and all you want to do is get off the plane, but you can’t because it has been on the tarmac for hours waiting to take off. While such delays are rare, they can be more common because of fewer flights to get you to your destination if your flight is canceled. A six-hour delay with 47 people aboard a small Continental Express plane at a Minnesota airport recently is the extreme. In June, the most recent month for which data is available, there were 278 tarmac delays of three hours or more. That was the most this year but still only .05 percent of the total number of scheduled flights that month.

Debbie Krupp of Chester was able to capture this photo of ospreys nesting in the Outer Banks. “The birds hatched, and I was so disappointed that I didn’t have my camera. GEAR & GADGETS The designers at Lug make sturdy little collapsible coolers, vinyl totes and other storage bags in bright colors with quilted fabric accents and fun shapes. They’re sized to be mixed and matched for picnics and other outings. My favorites are the Clearview transparent totes and zippered envelopes. These make for efficient compartmentalization while letting you see what’s inside each of the bags. Add one of the brightly colored quilted Freight Box Lunch Cube coolers (not transparent, but thermally sound), and you’re ready to head for the hills or a park bench.—Judi Dash

Scottish descendants from around the globe “came home” last weekend to celebrate their Scottish heritage with those who stayed behind. Bagpipes echoed off Old Town Edinburgh’s stone walls as Scotland’s children marched up the Royal Mile from Holyrood Park. Halfway up the medieval street, which is slightly over a mile long, one observer joked, “It’s another mile,“ referring to Edinburgh Castle. A clansman replied, “I think I need a whisky.“

The slower, more leisurely pace of life on North Carolina’s Outer Banks suits restaurateur Mike Kelly. “We still get things done here,“ he said, “but we may be a little slower than the rest of the world.“ Each year, hundreds of thousands of visitors descend upon the Outer Banks to kick back like Kelly and enjoy the area’s unspoiled beauty. The 130-mile chain of barrier islands is home to some of the most natural, undeveloped beaches in the country. The windswept beaches of Cape Hatteras National Seashore were listed by beach expert Stephen Leatherman (Dr. Beach) as No. 7 on his 2009 Top Ten List of domestic beach destinations.

Got a tattoo? You might be emulating Angelina or Shaq, but likely none of you would be inked at all if not for sailors. That’s the premise behind a new exhibit tracing the history of tattoos in American culture: The prevalence of tattooing today stems directly from the ongoing custom started by merchant and naval seamen in the 18th century.

WALL, S.D. Ted Hustead’s family knows a thing or two about running a tourist attraction during tough economic times. Consider Wall Drug, on the north edge of South Dakota’s Badlands. Hustead’s grandparents, Ted and Dorothy Hustead, bought the store in this small town in 1931 - during the Great Depression. Business limped along for nearly five years until Dorothy Hustead thought of putting up road signs along the nearby highway offering free ice water to weary travelers headed to the Black Hills and Yellowstone National Park.

SAN ANTONIO For decades, the channel of the San Antonio River north of the popular restaurants and retail shops downtown was overgrown and blighted - the kind of place tourists went only if they made a wrong turn. Not anymore. A $72 million overhaul - essentially doubling the size of the River Walk - has transformed the dry, weedy eyesore north of the River Walk into a 1½-mile manicured waterway with whimsical art, benches and fountains that can be passed on foot or by water taxi en route to attractions upriver.
