State budget woes hit foes of bootleg whiskey in Southwest Va.
Virginia’s one-of-a-kind Illegal Whiskey Unit—a team of agents dedicated to busting up bootleg stills—has fallen prey to state budget woes, leaving Southwest Virginia’s elusive moonshiners without a full-time, dedicated foe for the first time in decades. The whiskey unit based in Franklin County, long considered the “moonshine capital of the world,“ once numbered as many as five agents with expertise in the illicit liquor trade, and their mission—perhaps quixotic—was to quash moonshining. Now, the “team” is down to a lone member, and he’s a part-timer.

Clifton Forge ABC store is still at original location
CLIFTON FORGE Afifth of Bacardi rum sold for $3.90 in 1934 when the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control formed on the heels of the end of Prohibition. Today the same bottle sells for $15.90—that’s a price increase of more than 300 percent over the past 75 years. Indeed, much has changed in the Alleghany Highlands community of Clifton Forge over the decades.

Networks announce their fall season lineups
Networks announced their fall lineups this week.
- The CW will reimagine “Melrose Place” and add “The Vampire Diaries” about vampires competing for teenagers’ souls. “The Beautiful Life” is about the downsides of being a glamorous and sexy model.
- CBS is canceling “Without a Trace,“ “The Unit” and “Eleventh Hour.“ A new series with Jenna Elfman, “Accidentally on Purpose,“ is based on a San Francisco film critic who got pregnant after a one-night stand. Julianna Margulies will star in “The Good Wife,“ about a stay-at-home mom forced back to work when her politician husband, played by Chris Noth, is sent to prison.
