5 facts about celebrating black history
An early champion. Black History Month began as “Negro History Week,“ which was created in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted black historian and educator born in New Canton. He found that most history books ignored the black American experience and set about to draw attention to it. Celebration expands. In 1976, during the U.S. Bicentennial Celebration, Woodson’s week became a monthlong celebration.

Conference set for March

A group of historians will delve into the life and works of one of America’s most celebrated presidents at a conference next month on Lincoln and the South at the University of Richmond’s Jepson Alumni Center. The March 12-14 conference is presented by the American Civil War Center at Historic Tredegar.
