U.Va.‘s Soroye bids home crowd a fond farewell
Tunji Soroye has played just 16 games in a season marred by injuries and migraine headaches. CHARLOTTESVILLE Once was enough for Olatunji Muyiwa Soroye, who’s better known as “Tunji” at the University of Virginia. Before U.Va.‘s final regular-season men’s basketball game last year, Soroye went through the senior night ceremony with classmates Sean Singletary and Adrian Joseph, unsure if he’d be back in 2008-09.
Florida State to sacrifice wins in football?
TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida State may have to forfeit some of coach Bobby Bowden’s 382 wins and will be on probation for the next four years as part of its punishment for a widespread academic cheating scandal. The Seminoles will have to give up two scholarships this recruiting season and one the following year. Other sports will lose scholarships and victories - including three NCAA national championships in track and field - are threatened.

U.Va. ready for Tech
U.Va.‘s Monica Wright is averaging 21.1 points this year and made the all-ACC first team. Debbie Ryan believes—hopes, certainly—that a third encounter with archrival Virginia Tech is occurring at precisely the right moment for her capable but inconsistent University of Virginia women’s basketball team. The Cavaliers dropped to No.24 in the AP poll after Sunday’s 74-66 loss to Georgia Tech in their regular-season finale. That game was a harsh-on-the-rims affair during which Virginia committed 28 turnovers and went nine minutes without a field goal in the second half. The opportunity to renew acquaintances with the Hokies in tonight’s ACC tournament quarterfinal in the Greensboro Coliseum, Ryan said, should be just what the doctor—or the coach, in this case—ordered.

Men: Clemson 75, Virginia 57
For a half, it was a fiercely contested ACC men’s basketball game. After that, it was no contest. The Clemson Tigers, who lost in overtime to the Virginia Cavaliers at John Paul Jones Arena last month, avenged that defeat in emphatic fashion last night. The 18th-ranked Tigers celebrated Senior Night by crushing the Cavaliers 75-57 at Littlejohn Coliseum.

Against Clemson, Sene likely to be missing for Virginia again
Virginia, which plays tonight at Clemson, is likely to be without center Assane Sene again. Sene, a 7-0 freshman from Senegal, sprained his right ankle Thursday night in the first half against Miami. He was on crutches Saturday, his foot in a protective boot, and didn’t play against Wake Forest. U.Va. coach Dave Leitao said yesterday that he wasn’t optimistic that Sene, who’d started six straight games before getting hurt, would play against the Tigers.

U.Va. locked into No. 11 slot for ACC tournament
The losses by Virginia and Georgia Tech on Saturday locked both teams into slots in the ACC men’s basketball tournament. After losing Saturday to Wake Forest, Virginia is 3-11 in ACC play and 9-16 overall. Only one team has a worse ACC record: Georgia Tech (1-13, 10-17).

Familiar story: U.Va.‘s men can’t seal the deal
CHARLOTTESVILLE - Once again the University of Virginia men’s basketball team put itself in position late to steal a victory. Once again the Cavaliers failed to do so. U.Va. lost by five at N.C. State last weekend and by seven to Miami on Thursday night. The Wahoos’ opponent yesterday was No. 13 Wake Forest, and with 2:15 left it was a three-point game.
Hokies fight but fall short
Hokies fall short against No. 7 Duke A.D. Vassallo couldn’t help himself. He swished a 3-pointer with 6 minutes left yesterday, tying Virginia Tech with Duke. Then, he imagined how the Blue Devils would react when the Hokies finally cracked them, wiped out Duke’s 16-point first-half lead and surged to the eighth ACC win they crave.

Men: Miami 62, U.Va. 55
CHARLOTTESVILLE - The University of Virginia men’s basketball team, not known for its defense, all but shut down Miami guard Jack McClinton last night. When the game was on the line, though, the Hurricanes’ star delivered, as he has so many times in his illustrious college career.

CHARLOTTESVILLE—The University of Virginia men’s basketball team, not known for its defense, all but shut down Miami guard Jack McClinton tonight. When the game was on the line, though, the Hurricanes’ star delivered, as he has so many times in his illustrious college career. McClinton scored five points in the final 47 seconds to lift Miami to a 62-55 win at John Paul Jones Arena. He finished with 11, 12 fewer than his average in Atlantic Coast Conference games.
Hokies win close one over Tigers
Here it was again, the one defensive stand Virginia Tech needed to hang on to a win. The clock ticked down just as it had in those five games earlier this season, the losses that broke the Hokies’ hearts.

Men: Virginia Tech 80, Clemson 77
CLEMSON, S.C.—Malcolm Delaney scored 26 points and Virginia Tech ended a three-game losing streak by rallying past No. 12 Clemson 80-77 on tonight. Delaney put the Hokies (17-10, 7-6 Atlantic Coast Conference) ahead for good with 7 minutes left, then kept pushing them forward to keep their NCAA tournament hopes alive. Clemson (22-5, 8-5) had a final shot to tie the game, but Demontez Stitt’s desperation 3-point try bounced off the rim.

Capel thriving in Big 12
In Division I hoops, a former Duke guard heads the list of rising stars in the coaching profession. Jeff Capel, who turned 34 this month, is in his third season as coach at Oklahoma, which is No. 3 in the latest Associated Press poll. Before taking over the Sooners, Capel compiled a 79-41 record in four seasons as VCU’s coach. Mike Krzyzewski yesterday called Capel “one of the great kids we ever had here at Duke. I’m so happy for him, because you can see he’s in control of his team and has such a great rapport with his players. He’s done a terrific job.

Henderson spurs Duke
Gerald Henderson scored a career-high 35 points and No. 9 Duke held on to beat No. 8 Wake Forest 101-91 last night in an ACC game. Jon Scheyer added a career high with 30 points for the Blue Devils (8-4, 22-5). They twice led by 22 points in the first half and let the Demon Deacons cut the gap to two points before finally putting them away with a 16-6 run that was keyed by Henderson.
