Atlee’s DeJarnette is T-D’s outdoor track athlete of year

The honors keep rolling in for Atlee’s Ben DeJarnette. DeJarnette was cross country runner of the year in the fall and indoor track athlete of the year. Between those accolades, he was selected the boys Times-Dispatch/Sports Backers Scholar-Athlete of the year.

  Position: Pitcher
  The skinny: Repeat selection, but at a different position. Was selected as an outfielder last year. Fireballing right-hander was the Dominion District player of the year and second-team all-state after going 7-2 with a 2.16 ERA. Had 73 strikeouts in 482/3 innings. Drafted in 25th round by Cleveland; signed with VCU.

Prince George’s Vinson named softball player of the year

Lauren Vinson had one thing in mind when she let the pitch go to Great Bridge batter Kaitlynn Szczepanski in the semifinals of the Virginia High School League Group AAA softball tournament: get ahead in the count. Vinson’s Prince George team was locked in a scoreless battle in the bottom of the seventh inning. “I didn’t really know what she had done for their season. I didn’t know she was one of their big hitters,“ said Vinson, who had struck out Szczepanski in her previous at-bat. “I wasn’t as cautious as I should have been. I should have pitched away from her. When I saw the bat make contact, I was like ‘that’s outta here.‘“

  Position: First base
  The skinny: Batting in a district with four standout pitchers, Bridgeman hit .558. Among her hits were nine doubles, four triples and a home run. She knocked in 28 runs and scored 19. Was the Generals’ scholar-athlete of the year and first-team all-Central District and all-region. She’s headed to Longwood.

  Year: Senior
  Position: Goalkeeper
  The skinny: A six-year career as a starter in goal has come to an end. The Cougars were 105-14-4 during Albright’s stay in the net. Opponents scored just 20 goals this season against the state runner-up Cougars. Despite playing in pain after missing half of last season with hip surgery, she was named to the all-LIS and all-state teams. She will continue in soccer at the University of Richmond.

Thomas Dale’s Bates named boys soccer player of year

Will Bates’ list of honors includes Central Region and Gatorade state player of the year. The forward is a member of the USA junior national team and has an eye on the 2012 Olympics.

Year: Senior
  Position: Center back
  The skinny: Moves up from All-Metro second team as a junior. He scored four goals and had seven assists even though he was primarily a defensive player. Was all-district and all-region first team and will attend Radford. The Raiders eliminated undefeated Thomas Dale in the region quarterfinals.

Douglas Freeman’s Hahn is girls tennis player of year

Her first season of high school tennis completed, Emily Hahn is headed to France. She is certain to pick up some French culture, but it is tennis culture that is drawing her abroad.

Year: Freshman
  The skinny: Stepped right into the No.1 spot for the Trojans and didn’t lose (15-0) to a Dominion District foe in singles this year. Her only losses in the region were to Emily Hahn and Yasmin Fotovat. She was the district tournament singles winner and player of the year and advanced to the region semifinals.

All-Metro boys tennis  07/01/09 12:01 AM

Times-Dispatch All-Metro boys tennis team. Evan Charles, Deep Run. Playing No.2 singles and No.1 doubles with Hunter Koontz, Charles helped Deep Run defeat Mills Godwin and win the Colonial District title. He lost just three singles matches and teamed with Koontz to advance to the state tournament in doubles. The Wildcats were the region and state runners-up in team competition.
