Giles going for history
Virginia amateur golfing legend Vinny Giles of Richmond won two matches yesterday to reach today’s final of the U.S. Senior Amateur Championship at Beverly Country Club Course in Chicago. In Giles’ morning match yesterday, he defeated William Doughtie of Amarillo, Texas, 2 and 1 in the quarterfinals. He then defeated fourth-seeded John Pallin of Kenosha, Wis., 1-up in the afternoon semifinals. His opponent today is John Grace of Fort Worth.

An is youngest Amateur champ
TULSA, Okla. - The best amateur golfers in the U.S. keep getting younger and younger. For the second straight year, the U.S. Amateur crowned the youngest champion in its history that started in 1895. This time it was a 17-year-old Florida golfer emerging from a field that featured many of the top college players in the country. Byeong Hun-An defeated Clemson senior Ben Martin 7 and 5 in the 36-hole final yesterday at Southern Hills Country Club, the site of the 2007 PGA Championship.

Jamerson maintains edge at State Open
Appomattox’s Faber Jamerson shot 6-under 66 to increase his lead to five shots after three rounds of the VSGA SunTrust State Open at Independence Golf Club. The two-time champion sits at 17-under 199 after three rounds. Chris McCartin of Arlington is second at 12-under par.

Teen coasts to medalist honors
SUFFOLK - Eighteen-year-old Mikey Moyers shot his second consecutive 66 to win medalist honors in record fashion in the VSGA’s 96th State Amateur Championship at Cedar Point Country Club. Moyers, a Standardsville resident, set the 36-hole stroke-play qualifying scoring record of 12-under 132. He is the top seed for match play, which begins today.
