NEW YORK - Everyone, it seems, wanted to talk to Andy Roddick about his loss to Roger Federer in last month’s epic Wimbledon final: the 16-14 fifth set, the 77 games, the Centre Court crowd chanting the American’s name afterward. They wanted to console Roddick, pat him on the back, tell him what that match meant to them. Maybe offer some advice for next time.

WASHINGTON - Fourth-seeded Fernando Gonzalez defeated Tommy Haas 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the semifinals of the Legg Mason Tennis Classic yesterday. Gonzalez will play second-seeded and defending champion Juan Martin del Potro, who advanced after Robin Soderling withdrew before their quarterfinal with a right elbow injury. Top-seeded Andy Roddick played Ivo Karlovic, and John Isner faced No. 8-seeded Tomas Berdych in the evening quarterfinals. “Both of us played really good tennis in the beginning,“ said Gonzalez, who is playing in his first event since Wimbledon due to right knee tendinitis. “I only had one break point, and I did it. That gave me a lot of confidence for the rest of the match.“

Magic’s Lewis hit with 10-game suspension  08/07/09 12:01 AM

NEW YORK - Orlando Magic forward Rashard Lewis tested positive for an elevated testosterone level and was suspended yesterday for 10 games. Lewis said in a statement that he took an over-the-counter supplement late last season that included a substance he did not realize was banned by the NBA. He will be suspended without pay for the first 10 regular-season games for which he is eligible and physically able to play. He will be docked about $1.6 million of his $18 million salary for the 2009-10 season.

Report says Roy, Blazers agreed to deal  08/06/09 12:01 AM

PORTLAND, Ore. - Brandon Roy reportedly has agreed to a five-year contract extension with the Portland Trail Blazers. The Blazers planned a news conference with Roy today to announce the deal, according to a report by Yahoo! Sports that cited unidentified league sources. The extension is expected to be worth between $78 million and $82 million, the report said.

Less than 24 hours after Rafael Nadal was eliminated, Federer averted another stunner by beating Tommy Haas 6-7 (7-4), 5-7, 6-4, 6-0, 6-2. The French Open is the only Grand Slam event Federer has yet to win. He has been beaten by Nadal at Roland Garros four years in a row, the past three times in the final. And with the path to the title cleared of his No. 1-ranked nemesis, No. 2 Federer barely avoided a stumble.
