On stage for her fourth try at becoming Miss Virginia on June 27, 21-year-old Caressa Cameron was hit with a heart-stopping interview question. A judge asked her about California’s controversial Proposition 8, an initiative against same-sex marriage. In April’s Miss USA pageant, Miss California Carrie Prejean faced a similar query on same-sex marriage. Prejean ignited a firestorm when she said marriage should be strictly between a man and a woman—an answer that she claims cost her the Miss USA crown.

Soldier from Arlington dies in Afghanistan  04/08/09 12:01 AM

A soldier from Virginia has died of injuries suffered in a noncombat incident in Afghanistan. The Department of Defense announced that Spc. Adam M. Kuligowski, 21, of Arlington County, died Monday in Bagram, Afghanistan. He was assigned to the Special Troops Battalion, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) based in Fort Campbell, Ky. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation. As of March 31, 18 Virginians are among the 601 U.S. soldiers killed in Operation Enduring Freedom.
