Football: Colonial Heights 22, Armstrong 6  09/26/09 12:00 AM

Tyler Drews totaled 107 yards rushing on 21 carries and nabbed two interceptions on defense as Colonial Heights (2-1) beat Armstrong (1-2) in a non-district matchup. Brandon Brown also had an interception and pulled down an 11-yard TD pass for the Colonials. Armstrong’s Xavia Gary connected with Ty Williams on a 12-yard pass for the Wildcats’ only score.

John Marshall was trailing by six points late in the fourth quarter, but Malcolm Bell (11 of 20 passing for 98 yards) connected with Akeem Brown on a 10-yard toss with 30 seconds left to tie, and Chris Morrow’s extra-point kick sealed the deal for the Justices (1-1) in a nondistrict matchup. The Justices’ defense recorded two fumble recoveries and two interceptions, and Frank Bullock added 11 carries for 70 yards and a TD.

What he did: Senior quarterback completed 11 of 18 passes for 368 yards and four touchdowns (one interception) in Armstrong’s 31-25 victory over Thomas Jefferson. Had 37 yards rushing and one TD. Also had five tackles and one interception on defense. Age: 17 Other sports: Point guard in basketball Favorite things: “Other than playing sports, I like to listen to music, watch TV and play Xbox 360.“ Strengths: “My knowledge is one of my major strengths. A great arm and accuracy.“ Working to improve: “My footwork.“ Gary was a slot receiver and cornerback last year. He played one game as a substitute quarterback. Toughest opponent: “I would have to say myself. There are times when you procrastinate and you can only depend on yourself to get it done.“ Favorite food: Hot wings Favorite athlete: Dwyane Wade Favorite subject: Math Best sports memory: “Last week against TJ; leading the game-winning drive and throwing a touchdown.“ Gary made sure to thank his teammates and coaches. Biggest challenge: “Being able to manage school and sports together.“ He takes AP and honors classes. Person he admires most: His cousin, Bryant Gary, a former all-Central Region linebacker. “I look up to him as a father figure, uncle, brother, cousin—any male figure there is.“ Best piece of advice: “Not to let someone come in front of your dreams.“ Future goals: “Going to a four-year college or university to become a CPA or a mechanical or electrical engineer.“—Tim Pearrell
