Armstrong scored the first 19 points of the game then rallied from a six-point deficit to defeat city rival Thomas Jefferson at Armstrong. Wildcats’ quarterback Xavia Gary threw 80-yard TD passes to Tyee Williams and Dewayne Burnett and rushed for touchdown in the first quarter. TJ’s Marvin Robinson sparked the Vikings to the next 25 points. Robinson ran for two touchdowns and passed to Darius Simpson and Torian Bland for scores.

  Offense: The Blue Devils averaged 29 points a game last season behind Trey Johnson (5-10, 170), who rushed for 1,969 yards and 21 TDs, and Hermon Norrell (5-10, 170), who threw for 1,491 and 21 TDs. They return for their senior season with speedy and talented Jerel Harrison becoming the primary WR. Marquis Wallace (6-4, 290, Sr.) stands out on a young line. Finding a place kicker to replace Cory Gay is the toughest task.

A 22-year-old Richmond woman died after she was struck by a stray bullet from a gunfight between two men outside a nightclub last weekend in Brunswick County, authorities confirmed yesterday. Shannon E. Henley was pronounced dead at Southern Virginia Regional Medical Center in Emporia not long after the 3 a.m. shooting Sunday at Meljos at U.S. 58 and Reedy Creek Road, said Brunswick sheriff’s Maj. Kent C. Washburn.

Down at halftime, No. 2 John Marshall outscored Armstrong 45-26 in the second half to claim victory in the opening round of the Central Region playoffs. Travis McKie had 18 points, nine rebounds and six blocks for the Justices. Randal Ward had 15 points and three steals and Tahir Little had three assists. Quentin Christian led the game with 23 points in a losing effort for the Wildcats.

Jerry Mask scored 15 points, Natwan Young had 14, and top-seeded Highland Springs advanced to the district finals with a win over No. 5 Armstrong. Sage Reed kicked things off for the Springers, registering six rebounds, four blocks and four steals in the first quarter. Mask added six rebounds and four steals, and Xavier Parham recorded five assists and five steals. Quentin Christian led the Wildcats with 12 points.

Western Carolina bound Richelle Price led the Raiders, who have a bye in the first round of the district tournament Tuesday, with 23 points. Sydney Henderson added 12. Jasmine Otey scored 13 points for the Wildcats.
