The league title was the first in the history of the R-MC program. JENNY WEIR, LYNCHBURG Sport: Field hockey Local connection: Junior from James River Notable: Weir, a midfielder, earned a berth on the all-ODAC first team after a season in which she scored 12 goals and handed out a league-best 14 assists. She helped the Hornets post an 18-5 record, go unbeaten in league play and win a fourth consecutive ODAC title. HANNAH HESSER, SWEET BRIAR Sport: Swimming Local connection: Senior from Trinity Episcopal/Poseidon Notable: Hesser won the 100-meter butterfly (1:10.40) and participated in a pair of relay victories in Sweet Briar’s dual-meet conquest of Guilford. She swam with the 400-meter relay team that set a pool record and broke a 26-year-old program record by winning in 4:15.42. MATTHEW RICHARDSON, ELON Sport: Cross country Local connection: Junior from Collegiate Notable: Richardson, a two-time All-Metro performer at Collegiate, earned a berth on the all-Southern Conference second team by placing 11th (25:45.65 for 8K) at the conference championship meet. He is the first Elon runner in 13 years to capture all-league honors. AMANDA HAYES, DICKINSON Sport: Volleyball Local connection: Senior from Midlothian Notable: Hayes completed her collegiate career by winning a spot on the all-Centennial Conference second team—her third all-league citation in as many years. JENNA MOYE, VMI Sport: Cross country Local connection: Freshman from Cosby Notable: Moye delivered a fourth-place finish at the Big South championship meet in Winston-Salem (18:39 for 5K, 14 seconds behind the winner). She was rewarded with a berth on the all-conference team and was named the Big South’s freshman of the year. DOMINIQUE HARGROVE, VIRGINIA STATE Sport: Football Local connection: Graduate student from Monacan Notable: Hargrove, a defensive back, was one of only two CIAA football players to earn a spot on CoSIDA’s all-district academic team. To qualify, an athlete must carry a GPA of at least 3.3. Hargrove’s is significantly higher: 4.0 in sports management. LAUREN VAN DE KAMP, LONGWOOD Sport: Field hockey Local connection: Junior from Trinity Episcopal Notable: The Lancers’ dependable midfielder was named to the all-NorPac second team after a season in which she had seven goals and 17 points. She was Longwood’s second most-prolific player in both categories. Van de Kamp was a two-time team MVP at Trinity. SAMMY DOW, VIRGINIA TECH Sport: Cross country Local connection: Sophomore from Midlothian Notable: Dow broke the Virginia Tech course while winning the recent 4K Hokie Open in record fashion. She finished in 14:24.3, .2 faster than the previous record. Dow helped Midlothian win three Group AAA cross country championships. KRISTEN KORNACKI, QUEENS Sport: Soccer Local connection: Senior from Deep Run Notable: Kornacki, the Royals’ goalkeeper, was named to the Conference Carolinas first team after stopping 78 shots and posting a 1.80 goals-against average in her final season as a collegian. Tucker Notable: Hudson punched a first-half goal past Randolph-Macon netminder Jason DePre to give the Wildcats a 1-0 victory over their ODAC and state rival. Hudson, a midfielder, is tied for second on his club in points (four goals, three assists) through Randolph’s first 17 matches. KRISTIN STANNARD, STANFORD Sport: Soccer Local connection: Senior from Clover Hill Notable: Stannard, a key member of the nation’s No.1-ranked team, scored three second-half goals in Stanford’s 5-0 conquest of Virginia Tech last month in Greensboro, N.C. The hat trick was the first of her career and only the third by a Stanford player in the past 12 years. BROOKS ROSS, SOUTH CAROLINA Sport: Swimming Local connection: Freshman from Collegiate/NOVA Notable: Ross, a former first-team All-Metro performer, won the 1,000-yard freestyle (9:32.58) and placed third in the 500 free (4:42.19) to help the Gamecocks defeat SEC foe Kentucky. The triumph was South Carolina’s first against an SEC opponent in three years. LIZ SHAW, VIRGINIA Sport: Swimming Local connection: Junior from Mills Godwin/NOVA Notable: A solid road performance by Shaw helped the Cavaliers thump archrival Virginia Tech in their first dual meet of the ACC season. She won the 200-yard freestyle in 2:00.56, a Tech pool record and an NCAA ‘B’ time, and placed second in the 100 butterfly (56.86). CHELSEA PARKER, MARS HILL Sport: Soccer Local connection: Freshman from Deep Run Notable: Did someone mention grace under fire? Parker, Mars Hill’s goalkeeper, certainly qualifies. Though the Lions have been outshot nearly 2-to-1 in 2009, Parker leads the DII South Atlantic Conference in saves (55) and saves per game (9.17) through six league matches. WINSTON STAGG, WASHINGTON AND LEE Sport: Swimming Local connection: Senior from Maggie Walker Governor’s School/Poseidon Notable: Stagg collected individual victories in each of the Generals’ first two dual meets of the 2009-10 season. In fact, the top five runners in the 6K race—all Hokies—were credited with the same time: 20:26. Welch earned six All-Metro citations at Mills Godwin. Strehler completed the 6K event in 21:46 and earned crucial points for U.Va. by outleaning a George Mason runner at the finish. ALYSSA FOSTER, VCU Sport: Volleyball Local connection: Sophomore from Mills Godwin Notable: Foster rang up 20 digs in the Rams’ 3-1 victory over CAA rival William and Mary and added 11 in a 3-0 sweep of conference foe James Madison. Foster, a libero, was a member of the Mills Godwin team that reached the state Group AAA championship match in 2004. BILLY FORD, HAMILTON Sport: Soccer Local connection: Senior from Collegiate Notable: Ford won’t soon forget Hamilton’s recent 5-1 victory over SUNY Institute of Technology. The Continentals’ captain, a defender who typically works in relative obscurity, scored the first goal of his college career on an unassisted shot in the 30th minute. She now has 108 for her career. She sits atop not only Lynchburg’s but also the ODAC’s career goal-scoring charts. PARKER WALTON, GEORGE MASON Sport: Soccer Local connection: Junior from Midlothian Notable: Walton scored in the 86th minute to lift George Mason to a 2-1 victory over Howard in the opening round of last week’s D.C. ANNA DAVIS BARNES, WILLIAM AND MARY Sport: Field hockey Local connection: Graduate of James River Notable: The Colonial Athletic Association named Barnes to its Silver Anniversary field hockey team as a defender. And with good reason. Barnes was selected three times to the all-CAA team and was the league’s defensive player of the year in 2005. She rang up 71 goals in three seasons at James River and was the 2008 Central Region and Dominion District player of the year. CHANTEL JONES, VIRGINIA Sport: Soccer Local connection: Sophomore from Clover Hill Notable: Jones, the Cavaliers’ highly-regarded goalkeeper, collected the 14th and 15th shutouts of her career in last week’s victories over Liberty (5-0) and Hofstra (7-0). Jones missed Virginia’s 2008 season while competing with U.S. Soccer’s U-20 World Cup team. CALEB BROWN, VIRGINIA TECH Sport: Bass fishing Local connection: Sophomore from L.C. Bird Notable: Brown and Virginia Tech teammate Ryan Slate combined to win a high-profile college competition in Clayton, N.Y., in July. The two caught six bass weighing 18 pounds, 15 ounces. Their $10,000 prize was split between the school and the Tech fishing club. HANNAH BRINKS, ALABAMA Sport: Swimming Local connection: Senior from Atlee/Rays Notable: Brinks placed 16th in the 100-meter butterfly (1:00.93) at the U.S. National Championships and World Championship Trials, held in July in Indianapolis. Brinks set a Crimson Tide record in the 100-yard butterfly (52.97) in a February meet at Georgia. DREW ALTHOUSE, HOOD Sport: Lacrosse Local connection: Sophomore from Monacan Notable: Althouse, a reserve attacker, earned a spot on the Capital Athletic Conference all-academic team as a freshman. To qualify for the all-academic team, CAC athletes must finish a school year (2008-09 in this case) with a grade-point average of 3.2 or better. PHIL CERRETO, LONGWOOD Sport: Baseball Local connection: Senior from Midlothian Notable: Cerreto, the Lancers’ third baseman, was the Coastal Plain League’s offensive player of the year. Two television programs produced by Virginia Commonwealth University’s student-run VCU TV/HD have won regional Emmy Awards. The awards were presented Saturday in Washington at the 51st Emmy Awards, sponsored by the National Capital Chesapeake Bay Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. VCU TV-HD received an Emmy for “VCUQatar” in the documentary-cultural category. Lisa Figueroa was senior producer and Jordan Rodericks was producer for the program.

ASHTON PAYNE, SOUTH CAROLINA Sport: Softball Local connection: Senior from Mills Godwin Notable: Payne, a four-year standout, was chosen by ESPN The Magazine and CoSIDA as a third-team Academic All-American. The biology major became only the second individual in program history to win multiple Academic All-America citations. TRACEY KEE, EAST CAROLINA Sport: Softball Local connection: St. Gertrude alumna Notable: Kee was Conference USA’s coach of the year for the second time after leading the Pirates to a 40-15 record. Her ECU teams have collected at least 40 victories in 10 of the past 13 seasons. Her career record: 574-294-1 in 14 seasons, all at ECU. TANIQUE CARTER, JAMES MADISON Sport: Track and field Local connection: Senior from Hermitage Notable: For the second time in as many years, Carter’s performance at the ECAC Championship meet at Princeton produced a pair of all-East citations. The former Hermitage standout finished fifth in the 100-meter (12.03) and 200-meter finals (24.08). CHARLIE SCHMITT, DAVIDSON Sport: Track and field Local connection: Sophomore from James River Notable: Schmitt earned all-Southern Conference honors by placing third in the 5,000-meter race (15:12.67) at the league’s outdoor track and field championship meet in Statesboro, Ga. He was an All-Metro performer in track and cross country at James River. ANNE AILSTOCK, HOLLINS Sport: Tennis Local connection: Sophomore from Dinwiddie Notable: Ailstock was recognized as an all-ODAC second-team performer in doubles for the second consecutive season despite missing four league contests because of injury. Bennett Jr. has been appointed chairman of Virginia Commonwealth University’s Department of Neurology and will be the founding director of the VCU Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders Multidisciplinary Research and Clinical Center. Bennett, a University of Virginia professor and director of a center for Parkinson’s disease research there, will assume his new duties July 1.

W&M’s time (3:50.93) satisfied the ECAC qualifying standard. Harvey also placed third in the 400 hurdles (1:02.54). JERROD FARLEY, NORFOLK STATE Sport: Baseball Local connection: Senior from Thomas Dale Notable: Farley went 2 for 3 and blasted his fourth home run of the season to help the Spartans earn a 5-4 victory over Longwood in the second game of a nonconference doubleheader. Farley leads Norfolk State with 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts. THOMAS HOVIS, HAMPDEN-SYDNEY Sport: Lacrosse Local connection: Junior from St. Christopher’s Notable: Hovis didn’t score in the Tigers’ 15-7 victory over ODAC-rival Virginia Wesleyan, but he excelled at virtually everything else. He won nine of 11 faceoffs, collected seven ground balls and assisted on a pair of goals. Two Virginia Commonwealth University professors have been named fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Sarah Spiegel, chair of the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in the VCU School of Medicine, was recognized for her discovery of a potent lipid mediator with important roles in cancer, inflammation and allergy.

A University of Virginia project exploring the relationship between Christian spiritual beliefs and social practice has received a $2.1 million grant from the Lilly Endowment. The grant will finance the Project on Lived Theology for an additional five years, from 2010 through 2014. It is the fourth major grant from the endowment. Craig Dykstra, senior vice president for religion at Lilly, said the project is helping individuals and communities carry forward the practices and wisdom of the Christian tradition.
