Volleyball Showcase: a splendid teaching tool
Wins and losses at the Virginia Volleyball Showcase matter. Sort of. “The best thing about this tournament is the learning,“ James River girls coach Micah White said. There was a lot of learning going on amid the victories and defeats at the Richmond Convention Center yesterday. More learning will go on today as 40 girls and 18 boys teams finish up the two-day event that has become a Labor Day weekend fixture for high school volleyball in Virginia.

Capital District preview
in predicted order of finish 2008 records: 6-0 Capital, 12-1
Offense: The Blue Devils averaged 29 points a game last season behind Trey Johnson (5-10, 170), who rushed for 1,969 yards and 21 TDs, and Hermon Norrell (5-10, 170), who threw for 1,491 and 21 TDs. They return for their senior season with speedy and talented Jerel Harrison becoming the primary WR. Marquis Wallace (6-4, 290, Sr.) stands out on a young line. Finding a place kicker to replace Cory Gay is the toughest task.
High school notes
Even though high school volleyball matches have been played, the real beginning of the season takes place this weekend with the Virginia Volleyball Showcase at the Richmond Convention Center. Eagle Construction is presenting the 12th edition of the Labor Day weekend tournament that has drawn 40 of the best girls teams, public and private, from across the state. The boys field has grown from 16 to 18 teams this year.
