Bear kills owner  10/06/09 12:01 AM

SAYLORSBURG, Pa.—A woman was killed Sunday by a black bear named Teddy she kept as a pet. Kelly Ann Walz went into Teddy’s 15-by-15-foot cage to clean it when the 350-pound bear attacked. A neighbor shot and killed it, but Walz was pronounced dead at the scene. Pennsylvania Game Commission officials said Walz’s husband, Michael Walz, had permits to keep and sell exotic animals.

Bear herded away from Ashland homes  06/20/09 12:01 AM

A bear seen wandering around Ashland was herded by town police officers toward an unpopulated area on the northern edge of town yesterday afternoon, Lt. James Shelhorse said. It was last seen headed north crossing Archie Cannon Drive near John M. Gandy Elementary School, Shelhorse said. Earlier yesterday, Maurice J. Kiely, assistant director of campus safety at Randolph-Macon College, e-mailed the campus community about a “medium-sized black bear” that was seen in the vicinity of the campus.

Same bear believed seen in Chesterfield  05/17/09 12:01 AM

A bear seen this week in Chesterfield County appears to be moving in a southeastern direction. Authorities think a bear seen yesterday in the Matoaca Park area of southern Chesterfield is the same one seen Thursday morning in the Woodland Pond community near Pocahontas State Park. Chesterfield police Lt. Matt Botset said the bear has been described as fairly young, about the size of a large dog weighing 150 to 175 pounds, and shy around humans.

Game board focuses on quail, bear  03/01/09 1:07 AM

As usual, the house was packed and the docket full at Friday’s meeting of the board of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. Quail and black bear drew the most attention on a day when the group considered staff recommendations for changes in hunting and trapping regulations. The approved staff proposals will be advertised in publications across the state. In two weeks, a two-month public-comment period will open, and the board will make its final decisions at its meeting June 2.
