Opening a second store is challenging enough for a retailer looking to expand. But throw a troubled shopping center into the mix and stressed-filled nights are sure to follow. That is what has happened to business owner Anne Kennon, who owns the maternity fashion boutique It’s Hip to be Round. Ever since founding the Carytown shop in 2005, she has wanted to expand into western Henrico County to reach customers there.

Teleworking can be a win-win proposition Send your workers home so that your company can save some money. No, don’t fire them. Let them telework. It’s a win-win arrangement. As Virginia recognizes Telework Day today, state Department of Taxation Commis sioner Janie E. Bowen explains the benefits of the work-from-home trend: It can save money. You will need less office space, so you’ll pay less rent and associated costs. By home-basing workers, the tax department cut its real estate needs to two floors instead of 2½ floors, Commissioner Bowen said. The savings amount to about $130,000 annually in rent, utilities and other costs.
A look at the numbers, outlook for employment
Losing a job is, to say the least, difficult. Receiving severance or unemployment insurance helps pay the bills, but the mental anguish and uncertainty about finding a new job can be hard to overcome. Typically, the unemployment rate increases during a recession, though unemployment remains an issue even during times of economic expansion. Younger workers along with the least-educated almost always hold the highest rankings in the U.S. unemployment rate.
